I Believe That Eating Breakfast Is a Major Part of Having a Healthy Lifestyle I believe that eating breakfast is a major part of having a healthy lifestyle. Breakfast is a meal that is often overlooked by people across many age groups. Common excuses for skipping this important meal include “I don’t have time in the morning” or “I’m not hungry when I first get up.” In my opinion, these are weak reasons for missing out on the meal that sets the stage for your whole day. First of all, a healthy breakfast takes hardly any time at all. There are endless options for your morning selection. Pour a whole-grain cereal into a bowl and add a little low-fat milk and then you have created a quick solution that only takes minutes to eat. Also, fruit has the advantage of being both portable and nutritious. Grab a banana and you have a potassium-packed boost that comes in its own disposable, compostable wrapper. Next, although normally you may not be hungry when you first get up, if you start adding breakfast to your normal morning routine then you will find your body quickly adjusts to the change. Once you start expecting to eat soon after you get up, your body will physically respond to these mental cues. Now, the next logical question is “why is breakfast so important in the first place?” We must have heard that it is the most important meal of the day for a reason. Actually, there are several. Breakfast serves as a kick start to the day and to the body. Eating soon after you get up wakes up your body and gives your metabolism a push. Eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day, starting with breakfast, actually keeps up your metabolism and helps the body use calories more efficiently. Also, skipping breakfast leads you to be starving by lunch and you end up overeating to compensate for that. Eating a breakfast full of fiber and protein will curb cravings and keep you full until lunch. Finally, breakfast will give you the energy you need to get through your day. An early morning that is started with a nutritious beginning is guaranteed to be more productive and more enjoyable. Overall, breakfast has many benefits and is an easy and quick way improve a healthy lifestyle. This I truly believe. By Megan Gourley .

For this purpose, the food-related lifestyles (FRLs) tool was used to profile consumers. The FRLs tool is a useful instrument that describes different ways in which people use food to achieve their values in life. Data were collected by using an online survey carried out with Italian consumers of fresh-cut fruits. By using a cluster analysis technique, four Italian fresh-cut fruit consumer target groups were identified. The largest target group was represented by uninvolved consumers, who are not inclined to cook or plan meals and who are very influenced by the advertising of food products in their buying decisions.

    125 Mindful Cooking and Eating Learning to eat and live mindfully is the key to experiencing health and peace. Thich Nhat Hanh / Lilian Cheung As a practice of mindfulness, mindful cooking and eating is primarily about creating a space to pause and be aware of the present moment. It means concentrating fully on the preparation of the meal and then also as you eat the food. This also entails taking an interest in these processes, devoting our full attention to them. For example, when cutting the vegetables, we can pay attention to the slices that we cut piece by piece, to their shape and texture, as well as the respective colors that become visible. We can also perceive the sound as we cut them, or their smell, which may develop in intensity as we pay attention. When we cook rice, we can observe the steam in the pot and hear the water boiling. As we consciously eat, we likewise engage all our senses. Before we begin to actually eat, we can be attentive and mindful while setting the table and serving the meal. As mindfulness also includes taking a mindful approach to ourselves in general, the question of what we eat is also important. Does it nourish us sufficiently? Do we feel vital and healthy after eating this food? Mindful cooking and eating also involved thinking more consciously about the pro- duction, transport and sale of food. What paths does the food take until it finally ends up on our plate? Under what conditions do those who produce our food work? Is the production of the food environmentally friendly and fair?     Eating Breakfast Overview An alarming number of school age children do not eat breakfast each morning. In fact, according to the American Dietetic Association, more than 40% of girls and 32% of boys skip breakfast on a regular basis. Children who do not eat breakfast do not consume the necessary nutrients for their bodies to produce the energy needed to concentrate in school and to adequately complete learning responsibilities. A study conducted by the State of Minnesota on the correlation between breakfast and performance in school shows that “children who eat breakfast before going to school perform better in math and reading, increase their attention span and improve their overall behavior.” Breakfast affects a child’s overall performance during school by: • Providing energy needed to start the day • Eliminating hunger symptoms such as headache, fatigue, sleepiness and restlessness • Helping them to think faster when doing school work and respond more clearly to teacher questions • Increasing mental performance • Making them less likely to be irritable • Helping to keep them from “drifting” during class • Causing them to be calmer and less anxious In addition to improving a child’s performance during school, studies show that breakfast is important to a child’s general health as well. Children who eat breakfast are more likely to consume nutrients important to healthy growth, are better able to keep their weight under control, have lower cholesterol levels, visit the school nurse less often because of stomach aches, and are less likely to catch colds and flu. What Is a Good Breakfast? What constitutes a good breakfast? Minimal nutritional standards set by the USDA’s food and nutrition service includes one serving of milk; one serving of juice (fruit or vegetable); and two servings from the bread and/or meat groups.
