As such, it focuses primarily on the sea basins in Europe: Black Sea, Mediterranean, North-East Atlantic, North Sea, Baltic Sea, and the main rivers with relevant current or historic sturgeon populations (see Table 2). -

POLICE IN PEACE OPERATIONS Erwin A. Schmidl Preface Peace operations, from their beginning in the nineteenth century and increasingly since the end of the Cold War, have included varying degrees of "police activities," ranging from supervising indigenous police agencies to actually performing law enforcement duties. Until recently, this aspect of peace operations has often been overlooked or under-appreciated in favour of the military, humanitarian, and political components of such missions. The following paper gives an overview of peace operations which involved police functions — known as "civilian police," or CIVPOL, in U.N. language. I became involved in the study of police in peace operations while I was a Senior Fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace in 1995-96. A first conference on this subject was organised at the USIP in May 1996, followed by a series of conferences and workshops convened by Ambassador Robert B. Oakley and Colonel Michael J. Dziedzic at the National Defense University in Washington D.C. in 1996-97. This resulted in their recent volume Policing the New World Disorder: Peace Operations and Public Security, perhaps the most comprehensive contribution to our knowledge of police aspects in peace operations. The following paper is a summary of peace operations including police aspects, both by the United Nations and outside the U.N. framework. The information is based on a variety of sources, and is accurate as of July 1998. Two new missions have not been included: in April 1998, a U.N. operation was established for the Central African Republic (MINURCA, Mission des Nations Unies en République Central-Africaine) which includes 17 police officers. -

2.5 Ukraine Waterways Assessment Ukraine has high potential navigable rivers - over 4 thousand km: there are traditional waterways Dnipro - 1,205 km and its tributaries (Desna- 520 km, Pripyat - 60 km) and Dunay - 160 km, Bug - 155 km, and other so-called small rivers. Dnipro River and its major tributaries Desna and Pripyat carried out to 90% of total transport. The remaining 10% are Dunai and other rivers (Desna, Dniester, Southern Bug, Seversky Donets, Ingulets, Vorskla, etc.). Since Ukraine gained independence in 1991, length of river waterways decreased almost twice (from 4 thousand. Km to 2.1 thousand. Km). At the same time the density of river shipping routes reduced 1.75 times; intensity of freight transport - in 4,3 times, and passenger transportation - 7.5 times The volume of traffic fellt to 60 mln. MT in 1990 to 12 mln. MT in 2006, and then - to 5 mln. MT in 2014. Over the past two or three years, inland waterway transportation is only 0.2 - 0.8% of all the cargo traffic. The main categories of goods that are transported via inland waterway – agricultural products (mainly grain), metal products, chemicals. Company Information Only few companies operate on rivers. Med start i Uppsala gick färden förbi Sigtuna och Stockholm. Vidare via Kökar, Helsingfors, Viborg och S:t Petersburg. Därefter på Neva, Ladoga och Volchov fram till målet, den gamla staden Novgorod, av vikingatidens skandinaver kallad Holmgård. Sammanlagd färdtid var 23 dagar (Widerberg 2013). Sommaren 2013 fortsatte färden från Novgorod söderut, först över den grunda slättsjön Ilmen, därefter på floden Lovat (fig. 1). Varför åka båt på Lovat? Floden är omtalad i den fornryska krönikan (också kallad Nestorskrönikan) som en del av “Vägen från varjagerna till grekerna”, dvs från Skandinavien till det bysantinska riket. Många forskare har dragit slutsatsen att svenska vikingar brukade färdas genom Ryssland med båtar och skepp längs detta stråk medan andra har ifrågasatt om det verkligen varit möjligt att ta sig fram på detta sätt. Vestnik zoologii, 49(5):477–479, 2015 DOI: 10.1515/vzoo-2015-0058 NOTES First Record of the Striped Argiopa, Argiope bruennichi, in Novgorod Region, Russia (Aranei, Araneidae) [Первая находка Аргиопа Брюнниха, Argiope bruennichi, в Новгородской области, Россия (Aranei, Araneidae)]. — Large orb-weaving spider, Argiope bruennichi (Scopoli, 1772), is known to invade actively central and northern part of European Russia (Mikhailov, Borisova, 2013; Mikhailov, Panov, 2014); before the 2000s, this species was not found northwards of 52° N latitude. In the 2000s, more records were made from Moscow Region, Vladimir Region, and other areas in Central European Russia, Belarus, Baltic countries and Finland. One specimen was found in the environs of Saint-Petersburg. Territories between St.-Petersburg and Tver Region were not yet settled by Striped Argiopa. One of us (VA) found an adult female of A. bruennichi in Novgorod Region: Kholm District, environs of Kholm, 57° 09'39" N, 31°10'46" E, gramineous meadow, near sandy bank of Lovat River, 26.09.2015. CHEBOTAREVA MRRC RAMS, Obninsk, Russia Abstract We analyzed 62 cases of thyroid cancer in children and adolescents of Bryansk and Kaluga regions, the most contaminated as a result of the Chernobyl accident. The data on specified radiation situation as well as probable radiation doses to the thyroid are given. It is noted that the development of thyroid cancer depends on the age of children at the time of accident (0-3, 7-9, 12-15 years). They arc the most critical periods for the formation and functioning of the thyroid, in particular, in girls. It is suggested that thyroid cancer develops in children and teenagers residing in areas with higher Cs-137 contamination level at younger age than in those residing in less contaminated regions. It is shown that the minimal latent period in the development of thyroid cancer makes up to 5 years. The results of ESR method on tooth enamel specimen indicate that over postaccident period the sufficient share of children has collected such individual radiation dose which are able to affect on their health stale and development of thyroid pathology. For a long period of time Russia unlike Belarus and Ukraine was considered to be "favourable" by the development of thyroid cancer in children and adolescents after the Chernobyl accident. Such a fact appeared to be a dissonance in the common concept on the possible radiation induction of thyroid tissues to malignancy when received relatively low doses of iodine radionuclide.
