First, a story. It was August, 1977. Woody Allen and Marshall Brickman co-wrote the Oscar winning screenplay for the hit movie Annie Hall, and they were interviewed together by Susan Braudy of the New York Times. During the interview, Marshall stated, “I have learned one thing. As Woody says, ‘Showing up is 80 percent of life.’ Sometimes it’s easier to hide at home in bed. I’ve done both.” During this season where the world is figuring out how to navigate this pandemic, I can’t help but wonder how many of us are “hiding at home in bed” and how many are “showing up.” Don’t misunderstand me. Staying at home and not engaging with others in a crowd (no matter the size) is a smart and wise thing to do. But let me ask you this … are you socially distancing or are you physically distancing? At On the Road, we have made a choice to use the term physical distancing rather than social distancing. Why? Because we are still socializing, making connections and staying close with one another socially, while at the same time physically distancing from one another to keep ourselves and others safe. Yes, both of our Centers are open, and the witness of those members who are “showing up” in person can tell you that we’re exercising safe measures both physically and hygienically. AND, we also are open for connection via Zoom, Facebook, and telephone everyday. Take a peek at page 7 of this newsletter to see how 24 of us connected with one another for a grand time together. During these times, we understand that sometimes it’s easier to “hide at home in bed.” But if you get up, and “show up” you just might discover that LIFE awaits you when you purposely engage in it. As it pertains to our Peer Centers, you can show up in person, or virtually, or call us to simply chat. We have a favor to ask: Many of you have new phone numbers or have moved. Could you please call us and give us your new phone number so we can connect? We’re making calls every day and want to “show up” for you. Thank You! A. Denton, Texas August, 1973 Timmerman, Susan, A Burkeian Analysis of the Rhetoric of Gloria Steinem. Master of Arts (Speech and Drama), August, 1973, 173 pp., bibliography Qo1 titles. The purpose of this study has been to analyze the rhetoric of Gloria Steinem in order to determine how she uses identification in her attempts to unify the members of the Women's Liberation Movement and to enlist the co- operation of others outside the movement. The rhetorical theory and concepts of identification and consubstantiality developed by Kenneth Burke, literary and rhetorical critic, have been used in this study. The representative examples of Steinem's rhetoric which have been analyzed include a speech made at Southern Methodist University on February 3, 1972, Steinem's feature article "Sisterhood," which was published in the 1972 Spring Preview Issue of Ms. magazine, and a speech made by Steinem at the opening session of the National Women's Political Caucus in Houston, Texas, on February 9, 1973. This study is divided into five chapters. Chapter I includes an introduction to Gloria Steinem, who has been labelled as the primary spokeswoman for the Women's Libera- tion Movement.

  • Ford, Boys Will Be Boys (2018)
12 WITCH HUNT People’s lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation. Some are true and some are false. Some are old and some are new. There is no recovery for someone falsely accused—life and career are gone. Is there no such thing any longer as Due Process? So tweeted President Donald Trump at the start of 2018. His tweet was in response to the resignation of White House Staff Secretary, Rob Porter, who had been accused by at least two women of spousal abuse beginning at least as far back as 2003. One of those women, Jennifer Willoughby, filed for an emergency protection order against him in 2010. In a blog post written in April 2017, Willoughby described the abuse she alleged she suffered in her marriage to Porter, saying, ‘The first time he called me a “fucking bitch” was on our honeymoon. (I found out years later he had kicked his first wife on theirs.) . He belittled my intelligence and destroyed my confidence . in my home, the abuse was insidious. The threats were personal. The terror was real.’ More than a decade earlier, Porter’s first wife, Colbie Holderness, had taken photographs of a black eye she says Porter inflicted on her when they were holidaying in Florence. Over the subsequent years, she spoke to family, friends, clergy and even the FBI about the abuse. In fact, the FBI spoke to both Willoughby and Holderness about Porter when the Trump Administration took office, because White House staff members all require security clearance. That it was proving difficult for Porter to obtain his was apparently not considered an issue by the people he ultimately ended up working for.

JPHXXX10.1177/2053019616000002The Undergraduate Journal of Public HealthUnintended Consequences of the Bangladesh Tubewell Intervention—Tiwari 000002research-article2017 Media Industries 4.1 (2017) Donald Rugoff, Cinema V, and Commercial Strategies of 1960s–1970s Art Cinema Justin Wyatt1 University of Rhode Island justinw @ uri.edu Abstract: This article considers the cultural and economic impact of Donald Rugoff, founder of Cinema V and one of the seminal figures in the 1960s art cinema world. Rugoff initiated key aspects of marketing, distribution, and strategy that would influence other regimes of independent cinema through the decades. The eventual demise of Cinema V follows the pattern for the continual assimilation of independent film by mainstream forces. In this way, Cinema V shows us that art cinema and independent cinema are always tentative categories, best defined by case studies, rather than trends, and never far from the reach of mainstream Hollywood. Keywords: Advertising, Exhibition, Film, Marketing The “fathers” of the art cinema from the 1960s have been largely relegated to a brief citation in motion picture exhibition texts and specialized film histories. Nevertheless, these figures established much of what became common practice within independent film marketing and distribution, carving a space for independent fare separate from studio production. One of the seminal figures in the independent film world from this era was Donald Rugoff, founder of Cinema V. Rugoff illustrates the key aspects of marketing, distribution, and strategy that would influence other regimes of independent cinema through the decades. Rugoff was widely known for his strong visual advertising, his showmanship, and his ability to use his exhibition houses to support the efforts of his independent distribution company, Cinema V.

Within a week Weinstein had been fired from his company and expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. RELATED: The Problem with Privilege and Sexual Assault Now, in a post-Weinstein world, legions of women have felt empowered to speak out and share their own #MeToo stories—both on social media and in news outlets. The reports against the powerful producer sparked an avalanche of accusations against high-profile men in media, politics, Silicon Valley, and Hollywood, all with varying degrees of repercussions. Sexual harassment in the workplace is certainly nothing new, but it’s safe to say the issue is now, rightfully, taking center stage. LOUIS I. KAHN’S FISHER HOUSE: A CASE STUDY ON THE ARCHITECTURAL DETAIL AND DESIGN INTENT Abstract The preservation of architecturally significant structures has begun to experience a shift in both style and future use. No longer are Jeffersonian and Antebellum homes the focus of young preservationists and the ‘little old ladies’ that preceded them; rather, the tide has shifted towards structures that were both disdained and revered during their time. Modernist structures, while simplistic in form and function, contain a high degree of embedded meaning and significance. While the study focuses on the work of Louis I. Kahn – specifically the Norman Fisher house – an understanding of the design intent and vo erall role of the details within Mid-Century Modernist designs can contribute to future preservation practices involving similar structures.
