After serving as dean for more than a decade, Courtney Fletcher, Pharm.D., has announced that he has decided to step down in the fall. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a new dean to propel an internationally leading college of pharmacy through its next phase as part of a health sciences center campus in the midst of historic growth. With just over 50 faculty, 240 Pharm.D. students, and 60 graduate students, the college has seen remarkable success for its size. Its Pharm.D. program is ranked amongst the top 25 in the U.S., and the college’s research funding from all sources places it among the top 10 in the nation. The college moved to a new 85,000 square-foot building in 2016 which boasts state-of-the-art laboratories and education space equipped with next-generation technology and simulation and experiential-learning tools designed to help prepare future pharmacists for expanded roles in a changing health care landscape. The number of applicants to the Pharm.D. program continues to rise, and the college has trained most of Nebraska’s pharmacists who serve urban and rural communities throughout the state. Graduates of the Pharmaceutical Sciences program are highly sought after for positions in academia, industry and government. The incoming dean will inherit a strong foundation to build towards the future. Based in Omaha, one of the nation’s best cities to live, UNMC is the state’s only public academic health sciences center, and has six colleges and two institutes, serving about 3,700 students in more than two dozen programs. UNMC has seen unprecedented growth across all its missions. With strong philanthropic and state support, the campus has recently completed over 1 million square feet in new or renovated construction, and is on track to complete an additional million over the next five years. UNMC serves as the health sciences center campus in the four campus structure of the University of Nebraska. UNMC is closely partnered with Nebraska Medicine, the most esteemed academic health system in the region, consisting of 809 licensed beds at its two hospitals, more than 1,000 physicians and 40 specialty and primary care clinics in Omaha and surrounding areas. The incoming dean will hold a clinical or academic doctoral degree in pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in a related field, and will be qualified for the rank of professor. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional record as teacher, investigator and leader with proven ability to manage a complex academic enterprise, typically obtained through experience as a dean, associate/assistant dean, department chair, or center/institute director within a college of pharmacy. Candidates should have demonstrated scholarly achievement of national recognition, and have a broad understanding of complex issues of clinical pharmacy practice in today’s healthcare environment, with a vision for where pharmacy practice and education is headed. University of Nebraska Medical Center | Dean, College of Pharmacy 2 The UNMC College of Pharmacy In 1907, Dr. Rufus A. Lyman, a professor and physician in the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, urged the University to begin a pharmacy school. On April 23, 1908, the Board of Regents established a School of Pharmacy within the College of Medicine, and approved the appointment of Dr. Lyman as Director. In 1915, the Nebraska Legislature created the College of Pharmacy as a freestanding college of the University of Nebraska on the Lincoln campus, and the college moved to the Medical Center campus in Omaha in 1976. At the same time, the college initiated a new pharmacy curriculum, the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Program, becoming only the third pharmacy school in the nation to offer the Pharm.D. as the sole degree of the professional program. Today, the college is recognized as one of the outstanding institutions for pharmacy education and research in the world. The college is ranked 25th, in the top 20%, among 125 colleges of pharmacy in the nation by US News & World Report. The college is home to over 50 faculty, 240 Pharm.D. students, and 60 graduate students, and is organized into two departments of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The college is on strong financial footing with an annual budget of approximately $15 million. The college has steadily risen in national recognition for its education and research programs. Major accomplishments in the last ten years include: Realizing a 99.5 percent increase in NIH funding and ranking No. 11 out of the more than 145 colleges and schools of pharmacy in the U.S. in terms of NIH research funding. Ranking No. 4 out of all colleges and schools of pharmacy in the U.S. in NIH research funding per FTE faculty and being in the top 10 in this measure for the past nine years. Averaging 98.6 percent over the past five years for pharmacy students passing the licensure exam on their first attempt, one of the highest pass rates in the country. Increasing annual grant submissions by 162 percent, annual publications by 53 percent, and annual invention notifications by 93 percent. Becoming the first college of pharmacy in the U.S. to develop an affiliation with the Chinese Scholarship Council for the Pharm.D. program and the first to graduate a CSC student. Being the first UNMC college to move to a paperless education program and launching a digital initiative that provides all students with an iPad, to transform the classroom experience. UNMC Center for Drug Discovery – Lozier Center for Pharmacy Sciences and Education In 2016 the College of Pharmacy opened the new UNMC Center for Drug Discovery – Lozier Center for Pharmacy Sciences and Education, a $35 million building entirely constructed through private giving. The 85,000 square foot building serves as the home for UNMC College of Pharmacy and contains state of the art lab space designed to further UNMC’s role as a world leader in the fight against infectious diseases. The building completely replaces and expands upon the outdated education space of the former College of Pharmacy building, now the Joseph D. and Millie E. Williams Science Hall. It is equipped with advanced technology needed in the 21st century with active and digital learning tools; contains simulation and experiential learning infrastructure for further emphasis on the increased role of pharmacists in providing primary care, especially in rural areas; and has considerable space for student interaction, group learning or quiet study. The building also hosts laboratory and research space for drug discovery and development, drug delivery and clinical and translational research, with an emphasis on emerging and neglected infectious diseases. Labs were designed with an open plan so researchers can share information and collaborate much more efficiently. College researchers also will continue to be housed across the campus, including the Durham Research Center towers and in the Williams Science Hall. University of Nebraska Medical Center | Dean, College of Pharmacy 4 Academic Programs & Students The college has a nationally leading Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program, and matriculates 60 to 65 students per year, including five from the Chinese Scholars Council partnership. Applications have risen over each of the last three years, with over 85 percent of students coming from Nebraska. The college has built strong ties with the state college and university systems, and established pipeline programs with area high schools. This year’s incoming class is approximately 60 percent female, and 24 percent racial or ethnically diverse students.
