Taboo to Mainstream: an Industrial Design Solution to Sex Toy Production Taboo to Mainstream: An Industrial Design Solution to Sex Toy Production Judith Glover Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Swinburne University of Technology March 2013 Abstract Despite the plethora of feminist and sexual history literature that addresses issues of current and historic marginalization of women and the literature that specifically addresses women’s sexuality, little work has been done to discuss or develop female- centric sex toys. Sex toys are not a topic one will find in the canons of design history. These products, lacking in authorship, are difficult to find within standard hagiographies of famous designers or design companies. Nonetheless, sex toys and their precursors have been manufactured in their millions for over 150 years. Surveys show sex toy consumers are more likely to be females, yet historically women have only been able to access products that are either socially camouflaged as medical or home appliances, or the male-centric products of the pornography industry of the late 20th century. Even at the end of the 20th century the mass produced products of the adult industry still display Victorian attitudes and understandings of female sexuality. The product genre, affected by commercial and social marginalization, operates in a vacuum of health, safety and design standards that is commonly applied to other product categories. In this thesis I argue that the use of industrial design processes and methods in the development and marketing of appropriate female-centric sex toys has the capacity to make sex toys a socially and commercially mainstream product. I argue that, in doing this, not only will greater opportunities be opened for such products to exist outside the retail environments of the adult industry but competition and innovation will create a variety of solutions more aligned with a contemporary understanding of female sexuality across a broad range of demographics and psychographics. In this thesis I review theory relating to mass produced objects and their socio- cultural meanings to develop understandings of the current dominant aesthetics and conventions of sex toys that keep the industry marginalized from respectable commerce. These understandings are used to inform the design and evaluation of a female-centric sex toy artifact and brand. In the thesis I also document a number of i other new sex toy producers using industrial design processes, methods and standards to create products that differentiate themselves from traditional and historical pornography conventions. Seeing this as evidence of a distinct commercial trend, in the thesis, I develop a final argument for using changes to this product group as reflecting contemporary socio-sexual zeitgeist. In this thesis, I ultimately position sex toy design and manufacture within the industrial and product design field, showing that by using industrial design processes and methods the genre can and should be designed and manufactured using standards equal to those for other commercial product genres. Arguing the application of these process and methods brings competition and innovation to the industry and develops safer, higher quality and more varied product with a contemporary understanding of female sexuality. ii Acknowledgements I am extremely grateful to my supervisors, Associate Professor Deidre Barron and Ms Kate Bissett-Johnson for their advice, editing and continual support. Tuomas Harviainen Hanken School of Economics Ashley Brown Brunel University Jaakko Suominen University of Turku FINAL PRE-PUBLICATION DRAFT Keywords: game studies, sexuality, theory, methodology, critical meta-analysis ABSTRACT This article critically evaluates and questions the growth and maturity of game studies as a scholarly set of related approaches to the study of games, by providing an account of studies of sexuality in (mostly digital) games from 1978 to present. The main goal of this article is to highlight overarching themes and patterns in the literature, with a focus on theories and methodologies commonly used, and the way game studies is still risk-aware, even awkward in its discussions of sexuality. In addition to a review of 37 years of literature, the article employs a chronological and thematic metaphor analysis of past research texts to analyse whether game studies is growing up or in perpetual puberty, and whether it really is exploring sexual maturity alongside the games we study. It finds that while different periods of time can be identified in research as far as approaches to sexuality in games go, game studies is still to a large extent engaged in the management of the stigma that discussing sexuality may cause. Rather than a maturation process, the waves are shown to be manifestations of different types of environmentally influenced risk awareness, consecutive risk avoidance, and a resulting awkwardness.     Sex Toys: Material & Care Adapted from: Good Vibrations and Babes in Toyland. For all Toy Use If you'd like to swap toys with a partner or use the same toy vaginally and anally without interrupting the flow of things to wash up, put a condom on your toy (a new one for each use) to minimize the risk of transmitting viruses or bacteria. Vibrators Vibrators can be wiped clean with a cloth moistened with warm water or alcohol. Vinyl vibrator attachments can even be washed in the top rack of a dishwasher. To prevent corrosion of motor parts, don't ever immerse a vibrator in water (except, of course, waterproof vibrators). Silicone Toys Clean silicone with mild soap and water, and make sure it's been rinsed well and is thoroughly dry before putting it away. (Most viruses and bacteria cannot live on a dry surface.) Silicone products can also be safely washed in the top rack of a dishwasher or sterilized by boiling (unless your dildo has any plastic parts attached). Any toy made of silicone has a non-porous surface that will clean easily and thoroughly. Silicone is the best material for any toy that may be used by more than one person because it can be disinfected between people. If you boil a silicone dildo for 3-5 minutes in plain old water, you will have a safe playing field for the next person. You can just wash it with antibacterial soap if you are using it with the same person. One word of caution: please do what you can to avoid breaking the surface of the silicone.

The sex industry is no exception: For the makers of RealDoll, AI is poised to help meet customers’ most requested demand—bringing their sex dolls “to life.” Before the launch of their fully functional “sex robot,” the company encourages users to interact with “Harmony,” the AI at the heart of the technology, via its Android-based digital app. Though sex dolls have historically failed to alter sexual relations between humans, critics suggest that integrating AI technology demands researchers evaluate this prospect anew: Making sex dolls more lifelike—but not necessarily more realistic—could bolster negative gender stereotypes and erode cultural norms around sexuality. Though sex robots will undoubtedly be more than the sum of their parts, the experiences of Harmony app users provide a valuable entry point into this debate, offering empirical support for how people navigate intimate relationships with digital partners. Using qualitative content analysis, this study examines user discourse on the “Club RealDoll” forum to interrogate how the app engenders particular values or reinforces users’ preconceived attitudes about intimacy, consent and gender stereotypes.

These perspectives are, in turn, challenged by anarchist, queer, and crip conceptions that, while compelling a critical return to the subject, the structure and the law also serve as an inspiration for arguments that deplete the structures and render them hostages of the sovereignty of the subject’ self-fiction. Identity Wars (a possible epithet for this political and epistemological battle to establish meaning through which power is exercised) have, for their part, been challenged by a renewed axiological consensus, here introduced by posthuman critical theory: species hierarchy and anthropocentric exceptionalism. As concepts and matter, questioning human exceptionalism has created new legal issues: from ecosexual weddings with the sea, the sun, or a horse; to human rights of animals; to granting legal personhood to nature; to human rights of machines, inter alia the right to (or not to) consent. Part of a wider movement on legal theory, which extends the notion of legal subjectivity to non-human agents, the subject is increasingly in trouble.     13 Of Dolls and Men: Anticipating Sexual Intimacy with Robots NORMAN MAKOTO SU, Indiana University Bloomington AMANDA LAZAR, University of Maryland JEFFREY BARDZELL and SHAOWEN BARDZELL, Indiana University Bloomington Sex and intimate technologies are important in people’s everyday lives. A class of technologies that is becoming increasingly more prominent in discussions of the future are sex robots. In this article, we present a qualitative analysis of posts from a forum where people describe their interactions with sex dolls and their motivations for using them through text and photographs. Forum users use dolls as a content authoring interface, imbue them with agency, and construct meaningful sexual relationships with them. Implications for the design of future robots and autonomous agents in humans’ everyday lives are discussed. We highlight that sex dolls are used for more than just sex; they provide fertile ground for embodied fictions and care of the self. Future, customizable technologies for sexual intimacy and wellness should account for this use.
