GoExplorers.com RAY MAKES IT BACK-TO-BACK BIG 5 PITCHING HONORS • After junior Matt Holt earned Big 5 Pitcher of the Week during the opening week of the season, classmate Jackson Ray made it back-to-back for the Explorers as he earned the honor for week two. • Ray struck out seven over seven scoreless innings of work on the mound to help La Salle to a 3-0 shutout victory over Rider, picking up his first win of the season.

LA SALLE CAPTURES SECOND STRAIGHT SERIES • La Salle won its second series of the year by taking 2-of-3 games from Rider. • Senior Ben Faso went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and freshman Quentin Brown drove in a pair of runs to lead four Explorers with multi-hit games. La Salle overcame a 5-2 deficit and scored five runs over the seventh and eighth innings to snag a 7-5 win. • Jackson Ray shut it down in game two, scattering just five hits over his seven innings on the hill. Ray, junior Erik Janss and senior Connor Hincliffe combined for a shutout and La Salle scored three in the seventh to claim a 3-0 victory. • The Explorers fell behind 5-0 in the series finale before tying the game in the seventh. However, Rider scored twice in the ninth and La Salle added one more run but fell just short, 7-6. Junior Ryan Guckin and freshman Matt Rivera homered in the defeat.

HOLT STARTS SEASON WITH BIG 5 HONORS • Junior right-handed pitcher Matt Holt began the season with Philadelphia Big 5 Co-Pitcher of the Week honors after a lights- out showing in the Explorers’ season-opening win. • Holt (1-0) picked up the win after matching a career high with eight strikeouts while allowing only one run on five hits with no walks over six innings.

EXPLORERS OPEN 2019 WITH SERIES WIN • In the opening game of the season at Charleston Southern, Matt Holt anchored the Explorers on the mound and senior Ben Faso hit a three-run homer to lead La Salle to a 6-3 opening-day victory. The Explorers scored four runs in the sixth inning and two more in the ninth to snag the road win. • La Salle fell behind 4-0 after three innings in game two, which proved to be too much to overcome in a 7-3 setback. • The Explorers responded in game three, overcoming a 3-0 deficit and turning it into a 5-4 victory to win their first series of the season. Freshman Nick O’Day hit his first career homer and joined Ben Faso, Kevin McGowan and Matt Rivera with multi-hit games. Senior Mike Anthony earned the win, while Connor Hinchliffe notched his second save of the weekend. LOOKING BACK ON 2018 • The 2018 season saw a learning curve for the Explorers, who showed flashes of excellence at times, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. The Explorers finished 14-41 overall and 4-20 in the Atlantic 10. • La Salle’s hitters had 100 more hits, 80 more runs, 69 more RBIs, 44 more walks and 34 more stolen bases under Miller’s guidance in 2018 compared to 2017.

IMPACT HITTERS TO WATCH • Senior Ben Faso is back after a big season a year ago, culminating in Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Year and All-Atlantic 10 honors. Faso ended the year tied for fifth in single season program history with 75 hits and seventh in doubles with 17. He was second in the Atlantic 10 with a .347 average and led the team with 36 RBIs and 31 runs scored. • Senior Peyton Sorrels will look to continue where he left off at the plate during the second half of last season. Sorrels hit .308 in A-10 play and slugged four triples. The second baseman batted .389 and scored 11 runs over his final 22 games. • Junior slugger Ryan Guckin provided power to the middle of La Salle’s lineup last year and was rewarded with All-Big 5 hon- ors. He led the team with four home runs and was second on the squad with 12 doubles and a .437 slugging percentage. • The Explorers will have plenty of options at the dish with a mix of veterans and young guys. Sophomore infielder Tommy Toal provides versatility and batted .289 with a .391 on-base percentage as a rookie. Senior Kevin McGowan will aim to get on track after a strong summer, and outfielder Dylan Evans returns after hitting 11 doubles a year ago. IMPACT PITCHERS TO WATCH • Junior Jackson Ray hit his stride last season and became the Explorers’ most reliable starting pitcher. The left-hander led the team in innings pitched (63.1) and starts (11) while combining for two shutouts and striking out 43. • Matt Holt looks to be the power arm the Explorers need this season after splitting time as a starter and reliever a season ago. Holt also combined for two shutouts over 13 appearances as a sophomore. • Junior Niko Jenkins came into his own last year with a 2.63 ERA and will give the Explorers a reliable option as a reliever or starter when called upon. Senior Mike Anthony made 18 appearances last year and worked a 3-1 record, while Sebastian Martinez led the team with a 4-0 record out of the bullpen. ROOKIES READY TO MAKE AN IMPACT • La Salle’s freshman class was tabbed as the 73rd best recruiting class in the nation by Perfect Game, with a number of guys who will contribute out of the gate. • Nick O’Day was ranked inside Perfect Game’s 2018 list of top 250 prospects and was recently selected as Baseball Ameri- ca’s choice for A-10 Freshman of the Year. O’Day will look to make an immediate impact at third base and as a utility player who can also pitch. • Quentin Brown joined O’Day as a member of D1Baseball’s list of Impact Freshmen in the A-10. The center fielder hit .537 with seven homers last year at Williamsport High School. • Catcher Matt Rivera batted .597 with seven long balls last year and will have the opportunity to anchor La Salle behind the plate. Nick Hopkins will also provide athleticism to the middle infield as a switch hitter, and Ross Mulhall joins the squad after earning West Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year as a high school senior. • On the mound, Aidan Frye will have the chance to solidify his role as an immediate starter in the rotation. HEAD COACH DAVID MILLER

CLEMSON ‘04 2ND SEASON AT LA SALLE

David Miller, a former All-American at Clemson University and First-Round Draft Pick, is in his second season as head baseball coach at La Salle University in 2018-19. In just his first season at the helm, La Salle made drastic improvements on offense in 2018. As a team, the Explorers posted a significantly higher batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage than the previous sea- son. La Salle also had 100 more hits, 80 more runs, 69 more RBIs, 44 more walks and 34 more stolen bases in 2018 compared to 2017. Ben Faso was named Philadelphia Big 5 Co-Player of the Year and Second Team All-Atlantic 10 under Miller’s tutelage. La Salle also had three All-Big 5 honorees and received weekly honors from the Big 5 seven times over Miller’s first season. Miller, the 10th head coach in La Salle baseball history, served as head varsity coach at William Penn Charter School before joining the Explorers. He led the Quakers to a 26-2 record and a USA Today Super 25 ranking in 2017.

Over four years at Penn Charter, Miller compiled an impressive .757 winning percentage and racked up 84 victories – an average of 21 per season. In 2014, the Quakers went 20-6 and won the Inter-Ac League championship, finishing third in the state of Pennsylvania in the final poll. In his last year at Penn Charter, the Quakers compiled a .350 team batting average and a miniscule 1.03 team ERA en route to No. 1 rankings at both the state and regional levels and a No. 12 ranking nationally. Overall, 30 of his players have gone on to play collegiate baseball. Prior to taking over at Penn Charter, Miller worked as an assistant coach at the Division I level for three seasons including two at Villanova. From 2009-11, Miller worked with the Wildcat hitters and assisted in recruiting efforts. Miller’s coaching paid immediate dividends, as Villanova improved its batting average by over 20 points in his first season and compiled a .303 team average while also setting a school record for triples in a season with 27. Among those who benefited under Miller’s tutelage was future Major Leaguer Matt Szczur, who posted an impres- sive .443 average to win the BIG EAST batting title in 2010. Szczur was drafted in the fifth round of the 2010 MLB Draft and would go on to play in 106 games for the World Series champion Chicago Cubs in 2016. Before his stint at Villanova, Miller spent the 2009 summer season as a coach of the Chatham Anglers in the Cape Cod Baseball League. The Anglers reached the playoffs and at one point during the summer were the top-ranked team in the country among all collegiate summer leagues. During the spring 2009 season, Miller was the hitting coach at Rutgers-Camden. A high school standout at Chestnut Hill Academy who was a First Team All-City selection as a first baseman in 1991, Miller went on to star at Clemson where he helped lead the Tigers to national No. 1 rankings in both his sophomore and junior years. Clemson won three straight Atlantic Coast Conference championships during his time with the team. As a junior, Miller was a finalist for National Player of the Year honors as the Tigers advanced to the 1995 College World Series. A consensus All-America and First Team All-ACC selection, Miller batted .380 with nine home runs, 78 RBI and 27 stolen bases while starting all 68 games. He finished his collegiate career with a .335 average, 143 runs scored and 149 RBIs. Miller was the 23rd overall selection of the Cleveland Indians in the 1995 MLB Draft and played professionally from 1996-2003. In his second full season of pro ball at Double-A Akron, Miller hit .301 with 27 doubles, nine triples and 61 RBIs while swiping 22 bases. He played two full seasons with Triple-A Buffalo, collecting 189 hits and 40 doubles from 1998-99. Following his pro career, Miller returned to Clemson and received his bachelor’s degree in Communications with a minor in Social Sciences in 2004. 2019 LA SALLE BASEBALL ROSTER # NAME CL. POS. HT.
