1090899 New York Mets Battered Mets Fall to the Nationals By JAMES WAGNERAUG. 26, 2017 WASHINGTON — The revolving door that is the Mets’ battered roster spun a few more times on Saturday. Infielder Jose Reyes traded places on the disabled list with outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. Reyes returned from a short stint to recover from an oblique strain, while Cespedes went on the D.L. with his second hamstring strain of the season. Because both Cespedes and Michael Conforto have been injured, the Mets needed another outfielder. So they again dug into their farm system and called up Travis Taijeron to make his major league debut, playing in right field on Saturday. Taijeron, 28, went 0 for 4 in the team’s 9-4 loss to the , but he still accomplished a dream. “It was so exciting, and I was so happy my family was able to make it,” he said. “We’ve worked hard for this our whole entire lives.” Known more for his bat than his defense, Taijeron .272 with 25 home runs with Class AAA Las Vegas this season. He drew 70 walks but also struck out 146 times. On Saturday, he became the ninth player to make his major league debut with the Mets this season. Starter Robert Gsellman, who made his debut last year, allowed two runs on nine hits over four innings for another uneven outing in a disappointing season. The loss left his record at 5-6. Reliever Jeurys Familia, who recently returned to the roster after missing more than three months after surgery to repair a blood clot in his throwing shoulder, entered the game in the bottom of the eighth with the Mets training by two runs. Mets Manager Terry Collins wanted to ease Familia back into games before putting him into situations. Familia fired fastballs between 94 and 97 miles per hour, but his command was clearly rusty. He allowed three runs on four hits. He accidentally hit second baseman Adrian Sanchez, who was squaring to , in the chest with a 97-m.p.h. fastball. The game paused briefly as Sanchez recovered. He completed the at-bat with a run-scoring single. “I think maybe two more outings and I’ll be O.K.,” Familia said. “I’ve just got to get used to it, and after that, it’ll be fine. My arm feels great.” After the game, the Mets optioned Gsellman to Las Vegas to make room for Seth Lugo, who will return from the disabled list to pitch the second half of Sunday’s doubleheader. The revolving door whirled again.

1090900 New York Mets Robert Gsellman shelled by Nationals early as Mets lose, 9-4 BY KRISTIE ACKERT NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Updated: Sunday, August 27, 2017, 2:54 AM WASHINGTON — After his previous start, Robert Gsellman had to issue an apology to Sandy Alderson. After his start on Saturday, the Mets' righthander was packing his bags. Gsellman, who had to apologize to the Mets GM after responding that he didn't care when Alderson said he needed to pitch better, not only put the Mets in a hole early in their 9-4 loss at Saturday, but he burned the bullpen on the eve of a doubleheader. After the game, he was optioned to Triple-A in part because of how badly he has pitched, but also because the Mets needed to make roster room to bring Seth Lugo off the disabled list to pitch Sunday and bring back reliever Kevin McGowan to shore up the bullpen. The Mets are 3-8 in their last 11 games and have lost 10 times to the Nationals this season. Gsellman allowed six runs (two earned) on nine hits. He walked two and struck out one in just four innings of work. That left the bullpen mopping up five innings on the eve of Sunday's doubleheader and that didn't go so well either. Robert Gsellman went just four innings, allowing six runs on nine hits. Gsellman has had a disappointing second season in the majors. He is 5-6 with a 5.60 ERA in 16 starts. “He's still a young guy. Last year when he came up, there was a whole different circumstances,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. With Alderson using the rest of this dismal season as an evaluation period, Gsellman didn't do much to put himself back on the Mets' good side. Wilmer Flores homered in the sixth and then drove in two with a double down the right-field line in the top of the eighth. Though the Mets had the tying run on base, Travis Taijeron, making his major league debut, grounded out to end the threat. Adrian Sanchez hits a two-run RBI single in the first inning. “It's very frustrating,” Gsellman said after being told he was demoted. Amed Rosario’s running, leaping grab of Andrew Stevenson’s line drive into shallow center field in the third inning. TURNING POINT Robert Gsellman did not do himself any favors, missing a toss while covering first on a routine grounder in the first inning. He gave up four unearned runs in the opening inning. Wilmer Flores (below) went 4-for-4 with a and two-run double. With Wilmer Flores' sixth-inning solo home run, the Mets have 105 homers on the road this season. STAT OF THE DAY 105With Wilmer Flores’ sixth-inning solo home run, the Mets have 105 homers on the road this season, one shy of the franchise record set in 2016. Chasen Bradford and Josh Smoker pitched three scoreless innings after Gsellman was chased early. M.I.A. Robert Gsellman went just four innings, allowing six runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out one. He allowed four unearned runs in the first thanks to his error covering first.

1090901 New York Mets Mets need to add another outfielder for 2018 season, even if Michael Conforto, Yoenis Cespedes stay healthy KRISTIE ACKERT NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Updated: Sunday, August 27, 2017, 2:54 AM WASHINGTON — Even before Yoenis Cespedes limped off the field Friday night or even before Michael Conforto went down with a dislocated shoulder, the Mets needed to bring in an outfielder for 2018. The final 35 games of this season should make that pretty clear as the Mets play a mix of Juan Lagares, Brandon Nimmo, Travis Taijeron, Matt Reynolds and possibly Jose Reyes down the stretch. Lagares, who went 1-for-5 with an RBI in the Mets’ 9-4 loss to the Nationals Saturday, has proven to be an excellent late-game defensive outfielder and a platoon player against lefthanded pitching, but in part of five seasons in the majors, the 28-year-old is a career .258 hitter with a .297 on-base percentage and .651 OPS. As one Mets source said, he has “just never turned the corner” offensively. Nimmo has a chance to earn himself a spot as a fourth outfielder for next season. The 24-year-old has shown consistent progress offensively. He went 0-for-4 Saturday, snapping a streak of hitting safely in his previous nine games and is batting .318 with three doubles and seven runs over that time. He has already proven himself to be a good pinch hitter. He is hitting .264 in 34 games in the big leagues this season, but has yet to show any power. He is slugging .333 in parts of two seasons in the big leagues. confident he will ever find it, particularly if he doesn’t learn how to pull the ball. Taijeron, the 28-year-old journeyman minor leaguer, has been held back in the organization because of his tendency to strike out and some defensive lapses. He has always had power though, and that is what the Mets are going to need an assurance of heading into next season. He went 0-for-4 in his major league debut Saturday. Looking at the projected lineup next season, the Mets, a team that has been built on power and pitching, could have only confidently predicted that they would get power from Cespedes and Conforto. Now, with both likely having ended their 2017 with injuries, the need for another power-hitting outfielder has grown. Conforto suffered a tear in the posterior of his left shoulder capsule when he dislocated it on Thursday. He will be examined on Monday back in New York and the Mets are hoping they will have a better idea of how the condition will be treated. Conforto could seek a second opinion after that, but surgery is the most likely course and that recovery time, four to six months, would already be pushing up against a return in time for a full spring training. And the Mets are not certain that Conforto, who hit 27 home runs before he went down, would be able to produce as much power next season after whatever treatment he chooses. But he’s not the only question mark. Cespedes hit .292 with 17 home runs and 42 RBI in 81 games this season for the Mets. He will head into 2018 coming off a down year in which he suffered two serious leg injuries. He missed 38 games earlier this season with a strained left hamstring. He was diagnosed with a strained right hamstring Friday night. He is already looking to change up his training regimen to be able to stay on the field next year. He said Friday night that he knows he has to change it up from the bulk he put on his legs last winter, but at the same time said it was likely he would continue to work with the Mets controversial coordinator of strength and conditioning Mike Barwis. “I wouldn’t say necessarily different methods. That doesn’t mean I am not going to be there working with Barwis,” said Cespedes. “I think it just means with him we’re probably going to look at doing some different exercises.” The 31-year-old also missed games in 2016 with a right quad issue. The Mets were so concerned about his frequent leg issues that they had his back tested after his first injury this season to see if there was an underlying issue that could explain it. There is also some concern that the leg issues were hindering his power this season. Even with Cespedes and Conforto healthy, the Mets really needed to add another outfielder for next season. Now they have the rest of this season to see exactly why.

New York Daily News LOADED: 08.27.2017 1090902 New York Mets Jeurys Familia ‘felt great’ in return to Mets despite giving up three earned runs BY KRISTIE ACKERT NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Updated: Sunday, August 27, 2017, 2:47 AM WASHINGTON — It was a successful debut for Jeurys Familia. Sure the Mets closer allowed three earned runs on three hits and two walks (one intentional) in the eighth inning of the Mets 9-4 loss to the Nationals Saturday. But Familia's arm and hand “felt great,” after his first appearance since May — so that counts as a win for the Mets heading toward 2018. Familia struggled with command in his first outing on a major league mound since May 10. After that game, he complained of numbness in his right middle finger, was diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder and had surgery. “I think maybe two more outings I'll be ok,” said Familia. “I have to get used to it, then I will be fine. My arm feels great — 100 percent. That's all that matters right now.” Familia hit Adrian Sanchez, who had squared to bunt, on the chest with a 97-mile an hour fastball. The Nationals second baseman lay on the ground for several minutes and then after walking to first base — not realizing that it was not a hit by pitch and that the umpires had ruled he'd swung — he got an RBI-single off Familia. “I feel bad, because I don't want to hit nobody, I just want to do my job,” Familia said. “I am sorry I hit him, but I am just trying to do my job. After that, I kept trying to do my thing.” Matt Harvey allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits in 4.2 innings for the Mets' Double-A franchise Saturday night in what was likely his final rehab start before being activated off the disabled list. The righthander threw 72 pitches. Not only is the minor league season winding down, but the Mets optioned Robert Gsellman after his horrendous start Saturday. Harvey could easily slide into that spot in the rotation. He has been on the disabled list since June 16 with what turned out to be shoulder weakness, a side effect of his surgery in June 2016 to address the symptoms of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. The Mets optioned Gsellman because they needed to make room on the roster for Seth Lugo to start Sunday night's doubleheader and after Gsellman went just four innings Saturday, they needed to add Kevin McGowan to protect themselves in the bullpen for the doubleheader. David Wright went 0-for-3 and played five innings at third base with two assists for the St. Lucie Mets Saturday in a minor league rehab game, a sign that it might not be too long before he's back in the big league team's uniform. That is the Met captain's second game playing the field and the first time he is playing on back- to-back days. It is a big step for Wright, who has not played since having surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck in June 2016. He has played just 75 regular season games since 2015 because of spinal stenosis, a degenerative back condition, and the neck issue. “I think it's a huge sign, a big sign that he's able to come back tonight,” Terry Collins said. Wright went 1-for-3 with a single Friday night and had one assist, one putout and one error in three chances in the field. The goal is for Wright to be able to return in September when the rosters expand beyond the normal 25-man limit. The Mets are more concerned with Wright getting at-bats. Noah Syndergaard faced live batters for the first time in four months Saturday. “The process of playing as many games as he can, get as many at-bats as he can,” Collins said. “Moving forward, it's what he can handle, hopefully that's enough to continue. We'll see how tonight and take the next step whatever that is.” Wright's progress this fall will help the Mets determine what their offseason plans will be. The 34-year old is signed through 2020 and owed $27 million over the next two seasons. Noah Syndergaard faced live batters for the first time in four months Saturday. The big righthander threw live batting practice in Port St. Lucie, according to the team. Syndergaard has been out since April 30, when he tore his right lat muscle. With the minor league seasons ending soon, the Mets will have limited time to build up his pitch counts against hitters for him to get back. They still expect to get him back next month, piggy-backing him with another starter, so that he can go into winter confident and ready for 2018.

1090903 New York Mets Jeurys Familia roughed up in return as Mets keep reeling By Mike Puma August 26, 2017 | 8:12PM WASHINGTON — Jeurys Familia unloaded a 97 mph fastball that plunked Adrian Sanchez in the chest in Saturday’s eighth inning at Nationals Park. The crowd fell silent, as Sanchez lie face down in the dirt, attempting to catch his breath. Mets players crouched, hopeful Sanchez — who had been squaring to bunt on a play that was ruled a foul ball — wasn’t seriously hurt. Sanchez eventually got his bearings and remained in the game to deliver an RBI single, contributing to a ragged return for Familia in the Mets’ 9-4 loss to the Nationals. “I think [Sanchez] got too close to home plate and it was a sinker a little bit up,” Familia said. “I feel bad because I don’t want to hit nobody, I just want to do my job.” In his first appearance since undergoing May 12 surgery to remove a blood clot from his right shoulder, Familia allowed three runs on four hits and three walks, the icing on an all-around ugly afternoon for the Mets. “I think I tried too much today,” Familia said. “I missed the zone a couple of times and I didn’t have my command.“Maybe two more outings, I will be OK. I just have to get used to it, because my arm feels great, 100 percent. That is all that matters to me.” Familia was summoned into a game the Mets trailed 6-4 and surrendered a leadoff single to begin his long inning. Through it all, Familia kept his fastball in the 95- 97 mph range, struggling with his location. Robert Gsellman (5-6) had a rough outing for the Mets, allowing six runs — only two of which were earned — on nine hits and two walks over four innings. The right-hander created much of his own misery, dropping a throw from Dominic Smith in the first inning for an error that helped the Nationals score four unearned runs. Gsellman was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas after the game, creating a roster spot for Seth Lugo, who will start the nightcap of Sunday’s doubleheader. Michael Conforto’s appointment Monday is with team doctors, according to an industry source, but he is likely to receive an independent second opinion on his damaged left shoulder. Conforto has been diagnosed with a tear in the posterior capsule of the shoulder and could be facing surgery.

Matt Harvey allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on five hits over 4 ²/₃ innings for in a rehab start Double-A Binghamton at Portland.

David Wright played a second straight game at third base for Single-A St. Lucie in a rehab game and had two assists. He finished 0-for-3 at the plate over five innings. Noah Syndergaard threw live batting practice in Port St. Lucie.

1090904 New York Mets Yoenis Cespedes has seen the light, others see opportunity By Mike Puma August 26, 2017 | 7:20PM WASHINGTON — The search is underway for Yoenis Cespedes’ legs. As the Mets look toward next season with their $110 million investment in left field, it has become obvious to most in the organization — Cespedes included — that a new approach is needed to keep him in the lineup. Cespedes was placed on the disabled list Saturday with his latest leg ailment, a strained right hamstring that may keep him sidelined for the remainder of 2017. Already, Cespedes spent six weeks on the disabled list this season with a strained left hamstring, after last year hitting the DL with discomfort in his quadriceps. “I haven’t figured out what I’m going to do, but we all know I need to make some changes, so that is what I am going to do,” Cespedes said. But the Mets’ star outfielder also made it clear he wasn’t pinning responsibility on the team’s senior advisor for strength and conditioning, Mike Barwis, and he will search for answers within his current workout program. “I wouldn’t say necessarily different methods,” Cespedes said. “It doesn’t mean I am not going to be there working with Barwis. I think it just means that with him we are going to look at doing some different exercises.” In 81 games this season, the 31-year-old Cespedes has a .292/.352/.540 slash line with 17 homers and 42 RBIs. His absence further depletes an outfield that lost Michael Conforto earlier in the week to a torn posterior capsule in his left shoulder that may necessitate surgery. The injuries have created an opportunity for Travis Taijeron, who arrived from Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday and was inserted into the lineup as the right fielder for his major league debut in the Mets’ 9-4 loss to the Nationals. The 28-year-old Taijeron has averaged 23 homers in his three seasons at Las Vegas, but saw his path to the big leagues blocked by corner outfielders such as Cespedes, Conforto, Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce. He went 0-for-4 in his debut. “It’s hard not to get frustrated, but you can’t control it,” said Taijeron, the Mets’ 18th-round pick in the 2011 draft. Taijeron whiffs plenty —he averaged 151 in his three seasons at Las Vegas — but the Mets will take the trade off if it means adding a power bat to the lineup. Even so, manager Terry Collins indicated he may push for a more wide-open offensive strategy, keeping runners active on the bases, instead of waiting around for home runs. The Mets entered play leading the NL with 188 homers. “You have got to do what the strength of the team is, and when your team is powerful you hit homers,” Collins said. “If you don’t have that you have to create some runs some other ways.” The absence of Conforto and Cespedes leaves the Mets with no true backup outfielders, but infielders Matt Reynolds and Jose Reyes can be shifted to the outfield as needed. For Reyes, it might be an opportunity to enhance his value as he attempts to show he’s worthy of a return to the Mets next season. But ideally, the Mets would like to take an extended look at players such as Brandon Nimmo and Taijeron to see how they might fit for 2018. “I have no plan yet,” Collins said. “We are just going to mix and match and see if we can get Jose out there.”

1090905 New York Mets Mets' Jeurys Familia 'rusty,' how long will it take to knock it off? Updated on August 27, 2017 at 6:04 AM Posted on August 27, 2017 at 6:00 AM By Abbey Mastracco [email protected], NJ Advance Media for NJ.com WASHINGTON -- Jeurys Familia is back from his nearly season-long absence, but there's a reason that Mets manager Terry Collins doesn't have him penciled in for ninth-inning save situations just yet. Familia pitched for the first time since May 10, the day before being diagnosed with an arterial blood clot, on Saturday night, in the Mets' 9-4 loss to the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park. When he entered the game, the Mets were only down two runs. I'll let you do the math. "He's just rusty," Collins said. "We've talked about, what's the proper rehab? Well, know one knows. Maybe it's five innings or five appearances or whatever it might. But there's no guarantees." Familia touched 97 on the gun, but his command was all over the place. And the unknown is perhaps the biggest concern in all of this. The Mets are hoping -- and even banking on -- Familia returning to his 2015-2016 form. But he missed much of this season between a domestic violence suspension and a surgery that only few have had. "I think I tried too much today," he said. "My sinker didn't move the way it always does, it just missed the zone a couple times. And I don't have my command." It would be easy to say that Familia's performance the rest of the season is irrelevant, but that's not the case. If he continues to pitch like this, there will be questions coming into spring training that he's not going to want to answer. More than just fans will wonder if he'll be back to his dominant self next season, the club will wonder and maybe even Familia himself will too. He's not ready to look that far ahead just yet. He's confident that he'll be able to figure out these issues and knock off the rust in the coming days. "I need maybe two more outings, and then I'll be OK," he said. "My arm feels great, 100 percent. I know I can do my job." Abbey Mastracco Star Ledger LOADED: 08.27.2017
