ON THE COVER
On October 19 and 20, 2002, the First Presbyterian Church of Glasgow, Kentucky celebrated It's 200*^ Anniversary. It is our honor to salute the First Presbyterian Church in the winter issue of Traces and will include, with permission, materials gathered and presented by W. Samuel Terry IV and Golda Walbert, Committee, and many others, for the anniversary celebration. The cover photograph is the oldest known picture of the church taken in 1910.
The early records of the church were lost upon the organization of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church when the cterk at that time took all the minute books with him and never returned them. Names of many of the earliest members are listed by Franklin Gorin in "Times of Long Ago" and are shown below.

The Glasgow Times reported in December, 1880, that the Presbyterian Church would have a Christmas tree for its Christmas Eve Service. The community was invited to attend and see this wondrous sight. Traces - Volume 30, Issue No. 4, Winter 2002 - Page 97
Winefred andJ.S. Averill, members of the congregation gave the first silverplate Communion Service with individual cups in 1914. Thesetwas first used on May 24*** of that year.
The congregation has used printed bulletins for Worship services since 1927. Individual offering envelopes were used beginning in 1892.
Thefirst Mansewaslocated at 406 Cleveland Avenue and was occupied by Rev.Sykesand later by Rev. Sturgess. The Ed N. Caldwell property in St. Mary's Court was purchased in 19S0 to become the second Manse. The third Manse, on Wingate in Norris Court, was built in the 1960's on a lot donated by the R.H. Norris family. Somegifts to the church in 1928 included an electric bulletin board for the church lawn by Dr. Fidelia Edwards, iron rails for the front steps by R. Chamberlain in memory ofhis father, an electric cross and indoor bulletin board by the Old Planing Mill.
The First Presbyterian Church choir was the first in Glasgow to wear vestments. The earliest robes were white, then replaced with black and finally burgundy.
In 1942 during the second World War, flags were added to the sanctuary. The Christian Flag was given by Woods Richardson and the American Flag was donated by Bobby Lessenberry. In 1995 new flags were presented to the church. The Christian Flag was provided by the Memorial Committee and the American Flag was given in memory ofWilliam Rodgers by his wife, Ann. The flags are permanently on display in the Fellowship Hall and are displayed in the sanctuary on dates ofsignificance throughout the year.
In 1944 new chancel curtains were made by Mrs. Randolph Wilson, Mrs. R.H. Norris, Mrs. Nannie Bell, Mrs. Fred Hayes and Mrs. B.A. Sykes. At the same time vestments for the choir were made by members ofthe choir.
An annual Candlelight Christmas Communion was held for many years, beginning in 1944 under the direction of Rev. Sturgess. The annual Christmas supper preceded the service beginning in 1946.
The annual Christmas supper dates to 1946. By 19S8 four couples had hosted the supper for thirteen consecutive years. They were: Dr. & Mrs. W.G. Clark (Georgia Mae), Mr. & Mrs. Charles A. Goodman,Jr. (Sarah), Mr. & Mrs.O.M.Siegfried (Elizabeth), and Dr. & Mrs. William Wells (Betsy).
In May 1949, Mrs. Catlett W. (Byrd Rogers) Thompson hosted for the 27^ consecutive year the Womenofthe Church Birthday celebration. "Miss Byrd's" famous "strawberry repast" always featured cake, ice cream and strawberries.
Silver collection plates, inscribed to the memory ofMrs. J.C. (Mother) Ely, beloved teacher, outstanding student ofthe Bible, and consecrated Christian, were presented to the church on December 24, 1950 by the A.E. Ely family. Mother Ely taught the Ladies Bible Class from 1921 until her passing at the age of96, in August of 1947.
The Youth Fellowship of 1951 presented the pulpit Bible used on the lectern.
In 1951 flower arrangements for the altar of the church had been donated by Richardson Florists for nearly twenty-five years. Traces - Volume 30, Issue No. 4. Winter 2002 - Page 98
Mr. & Mrs. Bland Y. Redford presented to the church a Communion set in 19S1. Asecond Communion setto accommodate the enlarged congregationwas presented in memory of Mrs. Nannie Bell by her daughters, Miss Olive Bell ofLouisville, Mrs. Robert Morgan ofGlasgow, and Mrs. James W. Akin ofNew Orleans. Ahandsome pair ofsilver vases for the altar were presented to the church in memory ofPaul Dudley Trigg (1908-192S) by his mother and in memory ofFidelia Edwards, M.D. (1874-1951) by his daughter.
In 1952 the family ofMrs. L.A, McQuown (Katie Ball) presented in her memory the wrought- iron and blown glass light fixture over the front door ofthe church and a framed seal ofthe Presbyterian Church.
The Citadel Group created a tradition ofpresenting each baby bom to members of the group a sterling silver baby spoon. Katherine Lee Pedigo, the daughter ofJames and Mary, was the first to receive a spoon in 1952.
The lectern in the Sanctuary was dedicated in memory of Rev. Henry H. Sweets, D.D., in February 1952when the Presbytery ofLouisville observed a day in honor ofDr. Sweets. Dr. Sweets served this congregation as a supply pastor on two occasions and was a faithful friend ofchurch.
Since 1953 red roses have been used to mark the arrival ofinfants in the church family.
The linen cloth, embroidered with the monogram ofChrist, used on the Communion Table was presented to the church in 1953 by Mrs. Bland Yancey Redford in memory ofher husband.
The first electronic organ was dedicated on September 29, 1940. It was funded by several memorial contributions.
A new electronic organ was acquired by the church through hundreds of memorial contributions in memory ofBruce Huntsman, the son ofRev. William L. and Ruth Huntsman. The younger Huntsman, at age 19 in 1953, was killed in an automobile accident soon after he reported for service at Lake Charles Air Force Base in Louisiana.
Sadly, it was the large crowd gathered for Bruce Huntsman's funeral that brought to light the extensive termite damage to the wood framing of the floors in the sanctuary. As a result, a major renovation ofthe building occurred and the vestibule was added to the front in 1953.
The original circular stained glass window over the front door of the church was removed during the 1953 renovation and wasto have been placed in a new circular opening over the new front door of the vestibule. Unfortunately, the window disappeared and has never been located.
A small number of gavels were crafted from one of the old window sills removed during the renovation of the church. They were given to individuals who had performed outstanding works.
Geoi^e Henry Lewis, the church Sexton, retired in 1953 having served the church since about 1927. Mr. Lewisis remembered for adding his good voice to the singing offamiliar hymns from his post in the rear ofthe church. Traces - Volume 30, Issue No. 4, Winter 2002 - Page 99
In the mid-19S0's the congregation participated in creating a "Flower Cross" for which members would bring flowers to be placed in a form for an EasterSunday floral display. The Baptismal Font in theSanctuary was given in memory ofByrd Rogers Thompson byher many friends andwas first used onJune 19, 19SS. Thefirst infantto be baptized using the font was Sarah Scott Moore, daughter ofSarah Rogers Coffman and Scott Moore, Miss Byrd's great, great niece. Thesecond baptism was that of Charles Conrad Clarke, son ofMarjorie Mitchell and Cornell Clarke.
The three women's circles comprising the Women ofthe Church were renamed in 19S7. The Morning Circle wasrenamed the Byrd Thompson Circle in honor of a life-longmember. The Afternoon Circle was renamed the Laura Lauderdale Circle in honor ofa devoted woman ofthe church. The Business Women's Circle was renamed the Margaret Rogers Circle in honor ofa revered and faithful woman.
Mrs. William Wells (Betsy) presented her original oil painting of the OldTestament storiesto be hung in the Sunday School Assembly Room in 19S7. The painting was given to hergreat- niece, Betsy Wells Jones in 2001.
Elder Cornell C. Clarke initiated the traditionof the ushers wearing white carnations in their lapels in 19S8. While not repeated regularly, the practice isrevisited on special occasions.
Mrs. Iva Sater presented a lovely lace tablecloth to the church in the 19S0's. It is still used for special occasions today.
Mrs. J.J. Adams (Amelia Compton) was recognized in 19S8 for havingmade the Communion wafers for twenty-five years. Special gifts to the church in 1959 included new furniture for the Kindergarten Room in memoiy ofMrs. Weed (mother ofRuth Himtsman); rugs for thenurseiy by the Bill Rodgers and Hayes Glovers; a swing and hobbyhorsefor the little onesby Robert Norris; a beautifulMissal and Bible for theCommunion table in memory ofAlbert Ely; a brass flower stand in memory of Luther C. Ellis; a communion cup tray was presented to the Munfordville church forJack Wilhelm by Harry Norris; materials for theKindergarten and thelibrary by Mrs. Ely and the Weed Memorial Fund. Miss Elizabeth Woods, grand-daughter ofRev. Hervey Woods, gave the Celtic Cross for the top of the steeple in memory of her grandfather in 1965.
The neighbors ofO.M. Siegfried presented a handsomepair of brasscandlesticks for the altar in his memory in 1965.
The Randolph C. Wilson, Sr., family gave the larger silverplate Communion Service in his memory in 1971. The imposing wooden cross hanging in the front of the sanctuary was crafted by William D. Alexander and Dr. Gordon Clark. The very old lumber from which it was made was planed by Robert Howard Lessenberry. The Kawai console piano in the sanctuary was given to the church through memorial gifts honoring Evie Biggers Sidun (Mrs. John) and Earle Latham. The children and grandchildren ofRuth McQuown Sears memorialized her with a new silver baptismal font bowl and cover, the light fixture in the vestibule and the re-plating of the old silver Communion Service.
In 1991 the Presbyterian Women initiated the annual creation ofa display ofEaster lilies for EasterSunday and a display of poinsettias for the Advent and Christmas seasons.
The wooden pedestal flower stand was presented by Mrs. Robert Watson (Virginia)
Elder Sarah Porter Goodman established the Goodman Fund for Worldwide Mission as a demonstration of her interest in overseas mission work. Earned income is used annually to support appropriate works above .and beyond the congregation's budgeted benevolence gifts. Since Mrs. Goodman's death, the fund's principal has continued to grow through designated memorial contributions.
The Worship Committee initiated the practice ofremembering members who have died during the past year with a white rose on the altar on All Saints Day.
In 1994, First Presbyterian Church was bequeathed $100,000.00 by Drs. William McDonald Boles and Eva Carol Eichold Boles in memory of his parents, Fielding Jewell Boles and Irene McDonald Boles. The only stipulation for use of the funds was "to do good works." Session created the Boles Fund for Ministry with earned income being used annually for appropriate uses. The most recent use offunds has been to provide seed money for the church's Habitat for Humanitv house which is now under construction.
The family and fHends ofWilliam McGaghie presented a weather-proofbulletin board for the Educational Annex in his memory in 199S.
In 1999 the congregation created a Chrismon Tree for the sanctuary, using Chrismons made by members ofthe church. Each year additional Chrismon ornaments are added. The Memorial Committee provided the seed-money for the purchase ofneeded materials with which to make the ornaments. The 12' tree was given by SamTerry in memory of his grandfather.
A $s0,000 bequest from Hervey Woods Richardson generates interest income to be used for improvements to the physical plant ofthe church.
The Permanent Memorial Fund has provided for a number of additions and projects in recent years, including but not limited to, the permanent brick and limestone sign on the church lawn, the bronze historical marker, a sound system in the sanctuary, memorabilia cases in the library, and new robes for the choir.
The Permanent Memorial Fund purchased the Bicentennial Carillon which was built and installed by the Verdin Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. The funds for the instrument were primarily &oma bequest from Grace Latham (Mrs. Farle), an active member ofthe congregation for many years. Traces - Volume 30, Issue No. 4, Winter 2002 - Page lOl

NOTES RELATING TO THE 1802 MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES Rev. John Howe was athird-generation Presbyterian minister, his grandfather having immigrated to the United States as aresult of religious persecution of Protestants iQ Scodand and Ireland. The family first setded in Pennsylvania, then removed to North Carolina, then South Carolina, and finally to Bath and Fleming Counties, Kentucky. John was bom in 1769 on Crowder's Creek in the Bethel Township of York, South Carolina. In 1794.inLexington, Kentucky, he married Margaret Ann Wallace who was bom in 1773. John and Margaret were the parents of: Hettie Esther (md. V^'m. Towles Willis), Robert, Thomas, Katherine (md. John Thornton), Sallie W. (md. Archibald Cox), John Harvey, Julia Ann (md. Thomas J. Creel), Eliza R. (md. Andrew McElroy), Theresa B. (md. George Miller), Margaret Wallace (md. Samuel Sanders), and Mary 1. Howe. Rev. John Howe was licensed to preach by the Transylvania Presbytery in 1795 and was called to preach Beaver Creek and Little Barren Presbyterian Churches in Barren County in early 1798. He became the first minister ofFirst Presbyterian Church of Glasgow, circa 1800-1802. During his years in Glasgow, the Rev. Howe lived on Front Street and also conducted atschool on thenorth side ofpublic square. He also served three different churches and conducted aschool in Green County, Kentucky. Mrs. Howe died in 18+2; Rev. John Howe died in 1856 in Pettis, Missouri. John McFerran was bom in 1767 in Pennsylvania and later removed to Botetourt County, Virginia, as ayoungster. He married Amy Rowland ofBotetourt County in 1791. Amy was bora in 1770 and died in 1823. John died in 1837. Their children were: Samuel (died as ayoung man), William R.(md. Ann Courts; Mrs. Mary Bacon), Martin (md. Margaret Low), Ann (fu-st white person to die in Glasgow), John (died as ayoung man), Sally (md. Sam'l Johnson), Naoma (never married), Ann Eliza (md. Joseph Ralston was bom in 1767 and died in 1846. He married Sarah Wallace, sister of Margaret Wallace Howe. Sarah was bora in 1775 and died in 1853. They are buried inthe Ralston-Renfro Cemetery near Bruce. Edward Young was bora in 1768 in Virginia and removed to Lincoln County, Kentucky, to claim an extensive land grant. In 1789 he married Keziah Renick who was bora in1770. Her father, William Renick, was thefirst sheriff ofBarren County. Edward died in 1826 followed byKeaah in 1837. Their children were; Anna (md. Samuel Pinchum Malone), Mary (^PoU/") v/ho md. John Jones, Elizabeth (md. Isaac Wood), John (md. Maria Wilson, Mrs. Mary Combs), William (md. Mary Buckner Slaughter), David Rice (never married), Keziah (md. William Evans), Sarah Emoline (md. John Alfred Terry), Robert Henry (md. Mar^Jameson), and Samuel Renick (md. Matilda Jane Paxton). Edward and Keziah and some of their children and grandchildren are buried on their former farm on Strader's Branch Road near Hiseville.
Samuel Wren - no further information found. William Logan was bom in 1767 and later served as aPrivate in the Berkley County, Virginia Troops during the Revolutionary War. His wife, Sally, was bom in 1775 and died in 1841. William was the first County Court Clerk ofBarren County and was the first Clerk ofSession ofthe Presbyterian Church. Apparendy he left the Presbyterian Church as he is listed as afounding member ofthe Glasgow Baptist Church in 1818. He died in 1836. According to Gorin, he wore aqueue (a popular gendeman's hairpiece terminating in asmartly tied ponytail). John Jones was bora in 1786 in Virginia. HemarriedMaryCPo/^^ Young, daughter pf Edward and Keziah Renick Young, in 1814. Their children were: Charlotta (md. Thomas J. Jameson, John Sneed Bohannon), Nancy (md. Andrew Kendall) C.T. Jones, John Jones Jr., Edward Jones, William Jones, Elizabeth (md. an Evans), Angelina (md. aGrinstead), Robert (md. Sarah E. Everett), Keziah (md. John B. Jameson). He was astrong force in the Abolitionist Society in Glasgow in the 1830's. Desiring to flee slave-holding territory, the Joneses and several oftheir children moved to Grandview in Louisa County, Iowa, in 1841 or 1842. John and Polly contracted disease and they both died on the same day in 1843; they were buried together in one grave. Their daughter. Nancy Jones Kendall, used her Iowa home as astop on the Underground Railroad prior to the abolition of slavery. John is generally believed to be ihe "Elder Jones" referred to in Session records as the possessor of the original records of the First Presbyterian Church and refused toreturn them tothe church following die 1841 split ofOld School and New School Presbyterians. Francis Latimer (or Lattimer) died in 1817 at age 65 years ofage. His wife, Rachel, died in 1816 at 64 years ofage. They are buried near Slick Rock. First Presbyterian Church had arural outpost church onornear his property; it was known as Latimer's Meeting House.
Mr. McCoy - no further information found. Mr. Cochran*s identity is uncertain. One Elizabeth Cochran died in 1817 at age 21 and one Ann Cochran died in 1819 according to Barren County Cemetery Records. No further information has been found.
John and HughSmith - no Further information found but it is assumed that they were relatives ofAnn Smith Barlow.
Mre. AnnSmith Barlow was the wife ofAmbrose Barlow, who was aSergeant in the infantry ofthe Continental Line during the Revolutionary War. Their son, JohnSmithBarlow md. Jane Hart Howard. Isaac Robertson was the first lawyer to practice in Glasgow, Kentucky. He donated the lot on the comer of East Washington and Broadway for the Presbyterian Church to be built upon. We would like to offer sympathies to the family of Charlotte Bryant Leftwich, who was a dear friend and served many years as an officer and member of the South Central Kentucky Historical and Genealogical Society.
Charlotte left us on Thursday, September 5, 2002 at age 81. She was born in Hiseville, KY, the daughter of the late Ernest and Banks Howard Bryant and widow of John Robert Leftwich. She was a 1937 graduate of Glasgow High School and was a secretary until her retirement in 1983. Retuming to Glasgow from a residence in Tucson, AZ after a 25 year absence, she was involved in many activities including being an elder of the First Christian Church. She leaves a wonderful family who grieve her passing. She was interred at Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.

Jeff DRIVER'S Slayer Pays Death Price ( Unknown New Albany. Indiana , newspaper Nov 14,1941). Milton Leonard HAWKINS. 25. of Hart Co.. Kentucky, died a calm and silent death at State Prison eariy today for slaying a Jeffersonville taxicab driver in a $60 holdup. The young man gave his life in the electric chair for the lead pipe killing of Edmund J. DAVIS, 38, in May 1940, which he said he committed under the influence of marijuana. He was the first condemned man to seek a reprieve from Governor SCHRICKER. who took ofTice last January, and the first executed in Indiana in over two years.
To Chair Unaided. HAWKINS, bolstered by a chicken dinner and a long talk with a Catholic priest, did not ask for help in walking to the chair and said nothing. Dr. P. H. WEEKS, prison physician, pronounced him dead at 12:08 a.m.. a minute after his limp body was taken from the machine. HAWKINS had been in the death chamber nine hours. Wednesday, he had a visit from his father and stepmother, Mr. & Mrs. Richard HAWKINS of Cub Run, Kentucky: his wife and his ex-wife. He was sentenced in the Floyd Co. (Indiana) Circuit Court by Special Judge GeorgeC. KOPP last Christmas eve.
Pal Gets Life Term: J. W. HAYDEN, Jr., 20, of Mosleyville. Kentucky, Indicted on the same charge as Hawkins, pleaded guilty and was given a life sentence. Clementine LUTTRELL. 17. of Livemiore. Kentucky, an-ested with them, was charged with conspiracy to murder but, after tuming State's evidence, was allowed to plead guilty of delinquency and was sent to Clermont State girls' school until she should become twenty. Testimony at HAWKINS' trial showed that while the three were riding in DAVIS' taxicab they decided upon the robbery. HAWKINS hit him on the head with a pipe and the body was bound with wire and thrown into weeds beside the Charieston Pike.
Cab And $60 Taken: They took his taxicab and $60, itwas brought out; abandoned the cab near Taylorsville (Bartholomew County) and hired a farmer to take them on to Indianapolis. They spent a daythereand returned to Livermore on a bus,. HAYDEN and the giri were arrested and implicated HAWKINS. He was captured eight days afterthe killing.
The Death of Mrs. B.R. MINICK, Sunday Last (undated): Mrs. Anna Belle MINICK. wife of Mr. B. R. MINICK, died at her home here Sunday afternoon at four-o'clock. She was in her thirty-third year and death was caused by pneumonia. She was, before her marriage, Miss Anna Bell JONES, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. R.A. JONES, of Monroe county. Surviving are her husband and two little sons, her father and mother and one brother, Mr. Hugh JONES, of Monroe Co., and two sisters, Mrs. J. TURNER of Fithian, III., and Mrs. Carl HOWARD, of Good Hope. Mrs. MINICK was a splendid Christian character and a member of the Christian Church. Mrs. SEXTON given 5 Vi Years In Pen (undated): A jury returned a verdict late this afternoon in Circuit Court giving Mrs. Lizzie SEXTON five and one half years in the penitentiary for the murder of Jordan JONES at his home just off the Burkesville road near town, about three weeks ago. It is expected that sentence will be pronounced Friday morning by Judge HANDLEY, after which she will be taken to the state institution for women in Shelby County, [unknown date].

Full Military Honors to be Paid Walden Veteran of Spanish-American and World Wars Succumbs. Full military honors will be paid Technical Sergeant William C. WALDEN, 68, who died at his home on West Front Street yesterday afternoon at 4:40, at funeral services at the Glasgow Baptist Church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. J. A. GAINES and the Rev. J. H. SWAN will officiate. Burial will be in the Glasgow Cemetery. Sgt. WALDEN had been in bad health since he suffered a stroke of paralysis in December oflast year. He had been in declining health for about ten years.
He was a native of Monroe County, the son of the late Dr. W. C. WALDEN. He had had a distinguished career in both the U. S. Army and Navy, serving in the former branch for 12 years and in the latter, eight years. He saw service in Mexico and Cuba during the Spanish-American War and was with the Navy at the Battle of Jutland in the World War. He had been connected with the local cavalry organization since its formation. Sgt. WALDEN had made his home here the past ten years and had a host of friends who will mourn his death. He was a member of the Baptist Church and a very devout man. He was very popular in the cavalry troop and the band, of which he was a member. He is suA/ived by his wife, Mrs. Bernice WALDEN, five children, Mrs. Odell FORD, Gamaliel; James WALDEN, Lafayette, Tennessee; Eva Ruth, Roxie and W.C., Jr., Glasgow; five step-children, Sam COOK, Gallatin, Tennessee; Mrs. Robert MCPHERSON, City; Harry WALDEN, City; Miss Ree WALDEN, City; Mrs. Russell VELUZAT, Cave City; and two brothers. Newt, Plainview, Texas; and Jack, Louisville.
Full Military Honors Paid Veteran of Two Wars: Glasgow has not witnessed a more touching and more deeply impressive ceremony than the full military honors which were paid Sergeant William C. WALDEN in his funeral services yesterday. Scarcely a dry eye could be found, along the entire line of march of the funeral procession, as the sorrowful strains of Chopin's Funeral Dirge, played by the 123rd Cavalry Band, who led the procession, announced the passing of a comrade. Behind the band walked the firing squad, who preceded the remains. And behind the hearse, the rideriess horse of the deceased was led. with the boots and stirrups of the deceased reversed on the saddle, a military custom which is symbolic of service that is finished. All other sounds which frequent a busy business section were stilled by the impressiveness of the moment. It was not strange to glance about and see tears on the faces of people who were strangers to the deceased, for in that moment he was not only an individual, he was a Traces - Volume 30, Issue No. 4, Winter 2002 - Page 106
Aunt Julia's Scrapbook. continued: lasting symbol. He was a symbol of all those qualities which makes our country dear to us, the qualities that afford us protection to live in security. He was a soldier. It is such as he that transforms our spirit of patriotism into a reality. It is such as he who marched ahead and brings to pass the courage of our convictions. He was a physical representation of that which most of us lend our country in spirit only. He was part of its front line of defense. The responsibility of such service, which makes all men brothers, was reflected in the faces ofthe young men ofthe cavalry troop as they paid with grave deference and loyalty, their last respects to one who was a veteran in the art at which they have but started. The farewell salute consisted of three volleys fired by the firing squad atthe grave and taps. Alife-long soldier has joined the "Bivouac of the Dead." Note: According tothe Kentucky Death Records, Sgt. WALDEN died March 1,1939 at 68 years of age. Glasgow Baptist Church Resolutions on the Death of Judge Samuel E. JONES: Judge Samuel E. JONES, born in 1849 in Edmonson County, Ky., entered into eternal rest December 18, 1922. When nine yearsofage. Judge JONES with his parents moved from Brownsville, Edmonson County, Ky., to Glasgow, Barren County Ky., and for sixty four years was a resident of Glasgow, Ky. Very soon after he moved to Glasgow, Judge JONES became a member of the Union Sunday School, then being conducted at the Glasgow Baptist Church, superintended by the late Judge W.R. MC FERRAN. When but fifteen years of age. Judge JONES professed faith to Jesus Christ at Glasgow, Ky. He was, during the remainder of his life, an ardent, consistent and efficient member ofthe church he united with when he became a believer in Christ. A short while after he became a member of the church, he was chosen as its clerk and held that office for many years. In early life he was ordained a deacon of the church and held that position with credit until his death. During a portion of his life, he was Superintendent of the Glasgow Baptist Sunday School and was during the time he served, honored by School and Church and regarded as one of its best leaders. For a number of years, he was Moderator of Liberty Association, and as such officer, was held in the highest esteem by the Baptist denomination in general. At his death, he was Trustee ofthe Church and had been for many years. His devoted Christian life was recognized by the entire citizenship of his county, district and state. Believing in honesty, morality and Christian character, the people of his county elevated him to the office of County Judge while he was yet a young man. To this office he gave undivided attention and commanded the respect of all with whom he came in contact. He held this office until 1890. In 1892 the people of the 10th Judicial District of Kentucky, realizing the sterling worth, fidelity, honesty, and ability of Judge JONES, elected him to the high and exalted position of Judge of the District Court. Judge JONES held the office of Circuit Judge for twenty-three consecutive years. As a Judge he was the equal of many and the superior of many who held this office. His kind and courteous treatment of litigants and members of the bar in the district created lasting friendships t)etween him and those with whom he had business transactions which was never broken until death claimed him. That which stood out the more prominent in the life and character of Judge JONES was his Christian and church life. That kind of life was always first with him and his business life was second. His advice and counsel was sought by the leaders of the denomination to which he belonged. Now in consideration of the foregoing testimony relative to the life and services of Judge Samuel E. JONES, in his Christian character and life and his service in the Master's Cause, be it resolved by the Baptist Church of Glasgow, Kentucky: First That we in this manner make known to the present and future generations the high esteem placed by us upon the work and service of our deceased brother and that we by these resolutions make permanent record of the testimony of those who knew him and labored with and loved him. Second That we further make public expression of our sense of sorrow and loss at his going. Third That we express to his family our deep sympathy. And be it further resolved that these resolutions be spread upon the permanent record of the proceedings of this church and a copy be delivered to the press for publication.
