  • The Sexual Politics of Meat by Carol J. Adams
THE SEXUAL POLITICS OF MEAT A FEMINISTVEGETARIAN CRITICAL THEORY Praise for The Sexual Politics of Meat and Carol J. Adams “A clearheaded scholar joins the ideas of two movements—vegetari- anism and feminism—and turns them into a single coherent and moral theory. Her argument is rational and persuasive. New ground—whole acres of it—is broken by Adams.” —Colman McCarthy, Washington Post Book World “Th e Sexual Politics of Meat examines the historical, gender, race, and class implications of meat culture, and makes the links between the prac tice of butchering/eating animals and the maintenance of male domi nance. Read this powerful new book and you may well become a vegetarian.” —Ms. “Adams’s work will almost surely become a ‘bible’ for feminist and pro gressive animal rights activists. Depiction of animal exploita- tion as one manifestation of a brutal patriarchal culture has been explored in two [of her] books, Th e Sexual Politics of Meat and Neither Man nor Beast: Feminism and the Defense of Animals. Adams argues that factory farming is part of a whole culture of oppression and insti- tutionalized violence. Th e treatment of animals as objects is parallel to and associated with patriarchal society’s objectifi cation of women, blacks, and other minorities in order to routinely exploit them. Adams excels in constructing unexpected juxtapositions by using the language of one kind of relationship to illuminate another. Employing poetic rather than rhetorical techniques, Adams makes powerful connec- tions that encourage readers to draw their own conclusions.” —Choice “A dynamic contribution toward creating a feminist/animal rights theory.” —Animals’ Agenda “A cohesive, passionate case linking meat-eating to the oppression of animals and women .

The latter provides permission, a licence for pleasure unconstrained by law and limited only by the desires of the mutual participants. This Yuletide custom remains an attenu- ated token, a relic of the saturnalia, the solstice celebrations during which everything was temporarily everted: laws fell into abeyance, labour ceased, sexual liberty prevailed, gender roles became blurred and alterable, class differences receded, and control ceased. In turn, the saturnalia — a safety valve for repressed energies in antiquity — was itself a remnant from an era of primal freedom, the earthly paradise of global mythology, characterized by a total absence of control. The following essays hope to facilitate a regeneration of humanity through a renewal of this earthly paradise. Formally, the present collection is intended to constitute a pre- liminary body of visionary insights. If, as Debord maintains, “rev- olutionary theory is now the enemy of all revolutionary ideology and knows it”, then visionary insight in turn transcends revolution- ary ideology because the latter remains insufficiently radical.

To my Guru who met me and loved me first as Kirpal then as Ajaib from whom this book came to whom it is returned In most books, the I, or first person, is omitted; in this it will be retained; that, in respect to egotism, is the main dif- ference. THOREAU: WALDEN Preface This is a true story. Parts of it may be hard to believe, but they are true all the same. The narrative covers the entire period of my association with my guru, Kirpal Singh; the period of terrible confusion following his physical death in 1974; and the sweet and wonderful way in which I was dragged to the meeting with his successor, Ajaib Singh. It ends with my second trip to Ajaib Singh's ashram, in May 1976. The story of course did not end there; but the many things that have happened since then-the beautiful, very fruitful association with Ajaib Singh, the tremendous ex- pansion of his work, the way in which hundreds of Westerners every year leave civilization behind for a two- week sojourn in his desert ashram, his world tours-may someday find their way into a book of their own: they are too much for this one.

  • Organized Animal Protection in the United
CHAPTERX AMERICANMEAT Hot. fevered, frightened, trampled. bruised and tom; Fro1.ento deathbefore the ax descends; We killthese weary creatures, sore and worn, And eat them-with ourfriends. CharlottePerkins Gilman. -The Cattle Train." Concernfor the suffering of animals shipped over greatdistances prompted the 1877 founding of the American Humane Association (AHA) to coordinatenational action. For the next four decades, animal advocates struggled to promote enforcement of the Twenty-Eight Hour Law. By the early twentieth century, the act of slaughter itself assumed greater priority, and American animal protectionists pressed forwardwith both issues. Unfonunately, campaigns to ameliorate the conditions of transportation and slaughter proved largely ineffectual, as humane advocates faced offagainst some of the most powerful forces in the American economy-ranchers, railroad magnates, and meat barons. The Transportation of Live Animals For many years, advocates placed their hopesfor the relief of animal sufferingin improvedcattle cars. Yet the hope of material enhancements that might provide animals with food and water inside the carshad not been fulfilled. Water troughs especially proved a failure, and no viable drink-giving apparatus ever surfaced. The anticipated result of refrigeration- the slaughter of animals close to the locations where they were 393 394 raisedand the elimination of their suffering in transit-did not entirely displace live shipment either. At century's end, it remained an important part of the industry.1 Worst of all, the Twenty-Eight Hour Law had been a dead letter since its passage in 1873. In the early years, the Department of Agriculture had neither the means nor the authority to take charge of the law's administration.

  • Human Health, Animal Rights, and Ecology
Human Health, Animal Rights, and Ecology Volume III, No. 2, Jun. 1992 Aloha friends, Do you want to get in shape for summer swimsuit weather? Since I come from a family of overweight people(my father ran a hamburger restaurant for many years), the topic of weight control has always interested me. There are a zillion weight loss programs around, and most of them involve limiting calories, being hungry and miserable for a while, and then, at the end of the diet, gaining back all the weight that was lost. No one needs that kind of guaranteed failure. What other approach could we try? Perhaps we should observe various cultures to see which ones have low rates of obesity. Where the people center their diet on starches and eat few or no animal foods, they stay slender throughout life. The China Diet Study showed that the average Chinese person consumes twenty percent more calories, adjusted for body weight, than the average American. In spite of this fact, obesity is rare in China. This can not be fully explained by the differences in activity levels between Americans and Chinese; it is also related to the source of their calories. Other studies show vegetarians to be lighter in weight than meateaters and to have a lower percentage of body fat, although the calorie intakes of the two groups are nearly identical. Are you a vegan who is still carrying around extra weight? First of all, remove every trace of excess fat from your diet, including nuts, seeds, avocado, olives, coconut and soy products.
