Title: Hanzo the Razor: Sword of Justice Hanzo is an incorruptible and unorthodox officer in Edo, as famous for his self-discipline and his love shaft as his sword. Against the backdrop of his magistrate's occasional rounding up of vagrants, Hanzo learns that an infamous killer is no longer on his island prison: did he escape or was he never there? Hanzo's investigation leads him to the magistrate's mistress, the killer's former lover. Hanzo pursues political questions that suggest complicity at the highest levels. Using sexual assault, he interrogates the mistress and later the favorite of Edo's most powerful woman. Can he get to the bottom of what's going on before powerful forces get him fired or killed? Sword of Justice is the film that kicked off the Hanzo trilogy, where each film was done by The Sword of Justice different director. The original title Goyokiba means something like "Honorable blade user" or something like that, according The Sword of Justice Google Translate yeah The producer and the star is Shintaro Katsu most famously known as Zatoichiwhile the writer is Kazuo Koike, who made the original manga of this, Lone Wolf and Cub, and Lady Snowblood. This trilogy is like a mix of samurai-sploitation, soft-core porn and crime-sploitation. Kind of like a mix of Shaft, Dirty Harry, Yojimbo and pinku flicks. Even the slick title theme sounds like it's based on Shaft's. It's like a miniature '70s time capsule. The protagonist, Hanzo Itami, is a bad-ass Edo-era officer striving for justice with his sai blades in his one hand and his penis in the other. Because he needs it to interrogate the suspects. This may sound strange enough, but the thing is; the ladies quickly start to enjoy it. Therefore, Hanzo threatens that he'll stop The Sword of Justice them unless they The Sword of Justice out all the info, in which case they'll be awarded with further rape!!! Obviously, this isn't the kind of a film you'd have to take seriously, it's more like a sex fantasy with a budget once again I stress, the film was produced by Katsu. To say that they don't make them like they used to is an understatement. A movie like this would never, never get made in today's times. It's really a curious piece of history that something like this exists. I admire the creativity, at least. The plot of this film is typical over-plotted mess, a soup of characters characteristic for a film like this. There are some loose ends and many, many things which weren't clear to me at all, including the digressive sub-plot taking place in the last 10 minutes, where Hanzo ends up being a saint for euthanazing a dying dude by hanging him, but really, this isn't the type of film that benefits from the plot. It's a sick sexual fantasy which needs a pseudo-plot to make it somewhat justified. Oh but let me The Sword of Justice you, this movie is really visually inventive. Sharp editing and quick cuts, split screen, all the modern goods. I like how whenever Hanzo has to travel to the other side of the town, he's shown running The Sword of Justice front of maps of Edo in the background, until he gets to the destination. I'm not kidding. Almost 40 years before Gaspar Noe got the same idea for Enter the Void. Also, you really have to admire the way things are framed here. Someone put actual effort into the visuals of this film. And it looks incredible. It follows the zen-framing politics of many samurai films, The Sword of Justice it looks absolutely astonishing. The woman's face seen through the net of a straw basket, the water surface reflections of characters dominating the frame, it's all so beautiful. • A Double Edged Sword: the Films of Shintaro Katsu & Raizo Ichikawa
The Double-Edged Sword: The Films of Shintaro Katsu & Raizo Ichikawa © 1964 Kadokawa Pictures, Inc. The 1960s saw two of the most popular stars of Japanese post-WWII cinema grace movie screens. Like a strange but wonderful hybrid of Charlie Chaplin, Robert Mitchum, Wallace Beery and Clint Eastwood, Shintaro Katsu started out at Daiei Studios in the mid-1950s and labored pretty much unrecognized in period action movies and the occasional more serious “arthouse” film until 1962. That was the year he starred as a wandering blind masseur tired of being picked on who learns to wield a sword in Tale of Zatoichi (Zatoichi Monogatari) directed by unsung master Kenji Misumi. It was popular enough to warrant a sequel, and Katsu’s real-life brother Tomisaburo Wakayama played Zatoichi’s estranged brother and nemesis in the action-packed follow-up, The Tale of Zatoichi Continues (Zoku Zatoichi Monogatari). After that, with the box office breaking records, Daiei developed the character into a series of films. Katsu continued to portray the beloved blind swordsman in 26 movies as well as over 100 episodes on television. His last appearance as the humble, wisecracking anti-hero was in 1989 in Zatoichi (a film Katsu also directed). Katsu also starred in several of nouvelle vague director Yasuzo Masumura’s most memorable pictures, including Hoodlum Soldier (Heitai Yakuza) and Yakuza Masterpiece (Yakuza Zessho). In the late 1960s, Katsu formed his own production company, going on to produce most of the later Zatoichi films as well as all six of the Lone Wolf and Cub series (once again starring his brother, Tomisaburo Wakayama).

• Kitano's Zatoichi and Kurosawa's Traditions of "Jidaigeki" Comedies Rie Karatsu, Massey University, New Zealand
Between Comedy and Kitsch: Kitano's Zatoichi and Kurosawa's Traditions of "Jidaigeki" Comedies Rie Karatsu, Massey University, New Zealand Introduction If I make a film starring Kitano, it will be Zatoichi. (Akira Kurosawa, quoted in Sugimura, 2003: 96) The "jidaigeki," or Japanese historical drama, has seen a resurgence in recent years, fuelled by interest in the genre and action by Japanese and Western directors. Films such as Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (2003 and 2004) and The Last Samurai (2003), have produced interesting and popular films borrowing from the style and conventions created much earlier in the development of Japanese jidaigeki films. Any samurai film, whether made in or outside Japan, undoubtedly draws comparisons with Akira Kurosawa's samurai classics. In none of these works is recognition of a specific cultural context more important than in Takeshi Kitano's recent adaptation of the original Zatoichi (1962). Set in nineteenth-century Japan, Kitano's Zatoichi (2003) tells the story of Ichi (Takeshi Kitano); a blind, wandering masseur with a gambling problem and sword-fighting skills. Ichi wanders into a remote mountain town ruled by corrupt officials and a gang of rough mobsters. When he befriends a widow (Michiyo Ookuso) and her nephew Shinkichi (Gadarukanaru Taka), a dice gambler, he learns that the town is in the middle of a massive gang war in which two mob bosses (Saburo Ishikura and Ittoku Kishibe) lay waste to the competition with the help of the highly skilled ronin named Hattori (Asano Tadanobu). Hattori takes a job as an assassin for one of these gang lords in order to pay for treatment for his sick wife.
