Introducing The 2009 Global Outsourcing 100 By Michael F. Corbett, Chairman, International Association of Outsourcing Professionals

One of the many great values of the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals™ (IAOP™) is that it truly is an association of outsourcing professionals for outsourcing professionals. Its global membership works collaboratively to collect and disseminate information, analyses and insights important to outsourcing professionals, the companies they work for and the industry at large. IAOP’s annual Global Outsourcing 100, produced in association with FORTUNE® Custom Projects, is an example of this.

Begun in 2006, The Global Outsourcing 100 is an annual competitive ranking of the world’s best outsourcing service providers. It’s competitive in that service providers choose to participate in the program by submitting an application that essentially mirrors a customer’s request for information or early-stage request for proposal. Only the companies that apply are judged. Applications are scored and ranked by an independent panel of judges, most of whom are Certified Outsourcing Professionals (COPs) with personal experience reviewing and evaluating service providers from a buyer’s point of view. The application covers the 18 dimensions of an organization’s performance and capabilities known to be key to outsourcing success.

The companies are judged and ranked in two groups: Leaders — the larger, more established industry participants and Rising Stars — the smaller, fast-growing companies that may be tomorrow’s leaders. In 2009, IAOP added a new ranking for advisors — consultants, law firms, analysts. These firms were similarly grouped into Leaders and Boutiques.

The resulting lists — collectively known as The Global Outsourcing 100 — provide a valuable guide for outsourcing service providers and advisors. The companies presented are global and span the most common functional areas for outsourcing, such as information technology, business process outsourcing, real estate and facilities services, and a wide range of other industry-specific functions. The lists also provide an important window into the industry. By collecting and analyzing large quantities of data from many companies, the program yields insights into current and future happenings that simply are not available from any other source. Finally, the lists are an important reference for customers and others looking to understand who the established and emerging players are, and what they do well. And, with all of this appearing in a special advertising section of FORTUNE magazine’s annual FORTUNE 500 issue, The Global Outsourcing 100 serves as a powerful advocate for the industry.

The 2009 Global Outsourcing 100 Page A- The Global Outsourcing 100 Plus Report is a new and equally important part of the program. For the first time, IAOP is combining the collective insights gained through this program into a single document. The report contains detailed industry data analyses, developed by Jag Dalal, IAOP’s managing director, thought leadership. It contains all of the lists and sub-lists, providing a quick reference to the best providers from every angle. The largest section of the report contains profiles of more than 300 companies, giving users a quick and easy-to-use industry guide — all in one package.

Finally, and possibly most importantly, The Global Outsourcing 100 Plus Report provides results of all of the detailed analyses done by our judges. It shows how companies scored in each area of the application and why; allows participating companies to see how they stacked up against the scoring standards and the competition; helps companies see how they can improve not just their application but their capabilities going forward; and shows buyers exactly why each company ranked where it did — allowing companies to understand their results and compare their own evaluation criteria to the one used by our judges.

The Global Outsourcing 100 program and The Global Outsourcing 100 Plus Report are essential tools for helping outsourcing professionals produce better, more consistent outsourcing results for the companies with which they work. Input and suggestions for improving this program are always welcomed, and as our profession and industry evolve, so will The Global Outsourcing 100 program.

The 2009 Global Outsourcing 100 Leaders

In this fourth year of The Global Outsourcing 100, many recognized leaders of the industry maintained their positions from previous years, and a few emerging companies climbed the rankings. Accenture and IBM maintained their positions at the top of the list, while two of the fast rising offshore providers — Tata Consulting Services and Wipro — rose to the top five this year. Sodexo, a giant of the hospitality industry, rounded out the top five.

The 75 leader companies had average revenue of $2.6 billion, a 13.3 percent increase over the average revenue of last year’s selected leaders. This growth was slightly less than the 18.1 percent revenue growth shown by 2008 leaders over 2007 leaders. This clearly shows that market and revenue growth were sustained even though the economy had already started to impact market opportunities. Overall revenue growth for all companies considered was 13.3 percent, implying that leaders’ growth was similar to those that did not make the list.

These leaders provided employment to over three million people globally, and the average employment of 38,800 showed year-over-year growth of 17.6 percent. Overall growth of all companies considered for the leaders category matched the growth of ranked leaders.

The list of 75 leaders represents 13 different countries. Thirty-nine U.S. based companies were included the list, followed by 16 companies incorporated in India. This year’s list clearly shows a global presence, with inclusion of companies based in locations such as Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Philippines and the United Kingdom, as well as countries not commonly associated with outsourcing such as Denmark and Jersey.

Analysis showed that the leaders’ breadth of offering covered almost all process domains and offered solutions for all industry verticals.

The 2009 Global Outsourcing 100 Rising Stars

Once again, rising stars comprised a wide diversity of providers, from geographic location to services offered. The list was headed by a U.S.-based company, Synygy, and was closely followed by a -based company – China Data Group. Both of these companies are recognized for the first time on the list. There were 12 repeat winners among the rising stars, with most having been on the list since it began.

Rising stars, as the name indicates, are outsourcing companies with high growth and potential for being future leaders. Rising stars of 2009 had average revenue of $25.5 million, with year-over-year growth of over 39 percent. However, the growth for rising stars slowed in the last year when compared with the previous year’s growth of 48.2 percent. The highest growth company on the list had a 1400 percent year-over-year revenue increase, while the largest company had revenue of almost $30 million, with 33 percent growth. Growth of all companies considered for rising stars was similar to the growth for the ranked rising stars.

Rising stars once again proved that outsourcing is truly a global profession and fast-growing companies can be found almost anywhere in the world. The rising star winners were from 12 countries, with eight U.S.- based companies leading the list. China had four winners and Argentina, India and the Russian Federation each had two winners. Similar to leaders, rising stars also showed that companies from lesser-known outsourcing countries such as Australia, Belarus, Egypt and Singapore can compete and be recognized on this selected list. South America was also well represented by Argentina and Brazil.

Rising stars provided a wide variety of outsourcing services, but information technology was the dominant domain, and most considered Western countries their primary market. One winner did have a large local client group, however.

The 2009 Global Outsourcing 100 Page A- 2009 Companies were judged on four critical characteristics: size and growth; customer references; organizational competencies; and management ™ capabilities.
