Cassandra Britt-Nickerson

Whereas Cassandra Britt-Nickerson has been a shining member of the Police Department, serving as an example of true honor and bravery; and,

Whereas Cassandra Britt-Nickerson has served the Department in the capacity of Sergeant Assistant OIC Recruitment, Detective II, and Sergeant II; and

Whereas, for the past 19 years, Cassandra Britt-Nickerson has worked passionately with the citizens of Los Angeles protecting and serving them; and,

Whereas, Cassandra Britt-Nickerson today plays an important role in the hiring process of new officers; it is through the CAPS program that she oversees, that more recruits are coming into the Police Academy both mentally and physically prepared; and

Whereas, in addition to Cassandra Britt-Nickerson's innumerable community service, she is the loving matriarch of her family and has a long and successful career as a Certified Personal Trainer and model;

Therefore, be it resolved, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council commends Cassandra Britt-Nickerson for her extraordinary leadership, commitment and dedication to improving the quality of life in her community and the City of Los Angeles. STANLEY MOSK ELEMENTARY SCB:OOL

WHEREAS, Justice Stanley Mosk was born in , , raised in Rockford, Illinois, and moved to Los Angeles with his parents during the years of the Depression; and

WHEREAS, Justice Mosk obtained his bachelors degree from the University of and his law degree from the Southwestern University School of Law; and

WHEREAS, dedicating his career to public service, Justice Mosk played a major role in moving the State of and the City of Los Angeles in a direction of equality and character; and

WHEREAS, due to his connnitment to the people of California, Justice Mosk was a leader in the protection of civil rights and individual liberties as an advocate, California State Attorney General, California Superior Court Judge in Los Angeles, and California Supreme Court Associate Justice; and

WHEREAS, trailblazing in the 1950s and 1960s, Justice Mosk was the first Jewish-American to run for state-wide office, and broke the record as the longest serving justice in the California Supreme Court from 1964 to 2001; and

WHEREAS, during one of America's most racially discriminatory decades, Justice Mosk stood up against restrictive real estate covenants that banned racial minorities from residing in Los Angeles neighborhoods by ruling that the covenants violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution, and a year later the U.S. Supreme Court held the same in Shelley v. Kramer (1964); and

WHEREAS, elected in 1958 as Attorney General of California, Justice Mosk set up civil rights, consumer fraud, anti-trust, and constitutional rights units to improve and protect our quality oflife; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure as Attorney General of California, Justice Mosk forced the Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA) to end racial discrimination against black golfers; and

WHEREAS, Justice Mosk, again as Attorney General, fought courageously to protect the voting rights of Latino-Americans in Imperial Valley:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council along with the Mayor, City Attorney, and City Controller join the community of Winnetka, the Los Angeles Unified School District, the State of California, and tJce tanley Mosk's family and friends in celebrating the opening of the Stanley Mosk Eleme a Scho I in the · of Los Angeles.
