OVERVIEW As the COVID-19 pandemic hits all parts of the world and takes a toll on Global Public Health, Humanity First International (HFI), as a UN ECOSOC Consultative Partner, is playing its’ part in ensuring the required support is provided to low-middle income-based countries, who in large parts have underdeveloped infrastructure to deal with such pandemics. HFI have started a series of initiatives and engagements with UN WHO and other agencies to ensure mobilisation, preparedness, awareness and implementation of sustainable solutions that will support in such a crisis. Empowering and engendering locals to take action to contain and prevent the spread of the virus is critical whilst operating educational and healthcare facilities in the best possible manner. Work has been undertaken to prepare communities in , , Central America and the Middle East to combat COVID19 especially for vulnerable groups such as children, elderly, homeless, refugees, women and minorities. Details of our response are available at www.humanityfirst.org. HFI is also participating in national cluster and task force meetings where appropriate.

GLOBAL HEALTH

HFI has taken on the task of sensitizing local rural populations in Africa, Asia and Central America. This has been done at scale using face to face meetings with village elders, posters, radio and TV broadcasts in local languages, to raise awareness of the looming risks from COVID-19 and how to stay safe.

HFI runs hospital, surgical and care facilities in Guatemala, , , , , Togo, and . In our hospitals and those of partners across Africa, we have been providing PPE and training on its use to the staff. We have established hand washing points with hand sanitizer, started to use non-contact thermometers to identify febrile patients, but also starting to adopt WHO guidance on patient isolation and pathways to keep ongoing emergency, maternity and surgical procedures going through the pandemic.

HFI has also been supporting over 100 hospitals with PPE, other medical equipment, decontamination and triage facilities, and food for the front-line staff.

FOOD SECURITY

In higher income regions in Europe, North America and Australasia, families are struggling to cope without an income, and the lockdown has particularly affected those in care homes, homeless shelters or surviving on the streets. HFI is running food banks and supplying emergency food rations packs using a network of partners. In lower income regions, many families living a subsistence lifestyle and relying on daily wages have been plunged into poverty. HFI has been distributing warm meals and family ration packs including staples such as rice, bread, pasta, pulses, noodles and other items based on local cultural norms. In some countries, HFI has stepped up to assist refugees and stateless people who have been a lower priority in national action plans. So far over 5 million meals have been provided, but HFI is also working with farming communities to increase crop yields and to be able to donate some of the harvest to the most vulnerable groups. HFI would be keen to collaborate more closely with the WFP, and in some cases, is now part of the national programme such as in Uganda. HFI has also carried out 5 food basket distributions in Yemen; over 550 families have been supported with these 1-month food baskets, which include wheat, sugar, rice, oil, powdered milk and lentils.

WASH

Access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation was already a major issue, and in recent years, HFI has delivered over 3,000 village water installations, particularly in Africa and South Asia. However, through the pandemic, HFI has also been providing emergency drinking water in some regions. In southern India alone, HFI has distributed over 200,000 litres of water. HFI has also been making and freely distributing thousands of bottles of hand sanitizer (made using the WHO formulation and guidelines) and distributing face masks and leaflets with guidance on how and when to wash hands, use masks and enforce physical distancing. The message is slowly permeating, but more work is being done as part of our Global Health programme. HFI has also carried out 5 separate water purification tablet (WPT) distributions in Yemen; over 70,000 of these tablets have been distributed to more than 1400 households. Each tablet cleans 4-5 litres of water, and so around 350,000 litres of water have been made clean for use through these WPT distributions.

SHELTER

For those surviving on the streets, HFI has been providing thousands of blankets and pillows, and in some cases, helping to rebuild basic homes which have been damaged.

LOGISTICS

Humanity First has been working with Logistics Cluster and WFP who have established a special focus group to tackle the logistics challenges of Covid-19. A marketplace has been launched by WFP, of which HFI is a registered partner, that allows registered charities to book air freight to and from multiple destinations. HFI is working closely now internally to make use of this. HFI has also been working with a new partner FlexPort who are a logistics charity. HFI have been approved by Flexport for HFI logistics needs. This will provide HFI a strategic advantage in covering those routes where WFP is not providing logistics.

EMT

HFI have been operating in global disasters since 1994 and have been providing EMT1 mobile and fixed services. HFI have the capability of EMT2/3 and have provided resource for such operational activities to other NGOs and governments. HFI have been involved in the mentoring and 3
