It is our goal to present to you a program that allows every student the opportunity to be challenged, to pursue his/her interests and to realize his/her potential. Please study this publication carefully. Each course listing is accompanied by a detailed description which will aid you greatly in your selection of courses. The final section, entitled Academic Policies and Procedures, is of vital importance to you. It contains information about graduation requirements and the various options available to you to gain the credits necessary to graduate from Okemos High School. It provides information concerning auditing courses, dropping and adding courses, acquiring credit externally and information about guided independent study, the credit/no credit option, and several other academic policies. It is a pleasure for me to work with the exceptional faculty which will facilitate your learning.     Okemos High School 2014 Spring Sports Wrap-Up JUNE 25, 2014 From The Athletic Office As the 2014 school year comes to a close , we would like to thank all of our Okemos High School student-athletes, coaches, parents/guardians, and fans for their enthusiasm and dedication this year! We’d like to take a moment to reflect on all of our spring sports teams with our 2014 Spring Sports Wrap-Up! As always, our student-athletes represented OHS extremely well on and off the field. Please enjoy the recap below and have a great summer! Boys Baseball The Okemos Baseball team put together a strong 18-10 winning record this spring spurred by impressive double-header wins against rival Holt and some key non- conference victories. “We were successful and had fun doing it,” said head varsity coach Phil Magsig as he recalled the season highlights, including a trip up north to compete against top programs in Traverse City. The Chiefs were led by a strong group for the 2014 season. Andrew Cone was a unanimous selection to the CAAC Blue All- Conference first team while Tyler Schwaner, Christian Moore, Conner George, and Kyle Krumm also earned all-league honors. Boys Golf “It was a very rewarding season as our young team continued to improve with every match,” said head boys golf coach Dan Stolz. The Chiefs’ efforts week in and week out culminated with standout-out performances at the end of the season. The final three matches of the year produced the team’s lowest scores consecutively. Junior Ross Lazar led the team with an average of 77.5, followed by sophomore Chand Rajendra Nicolucci with 78.6.

Sports Role Model: MSU VB players Rachel Minarik and Autumn Bailey Greatest Achievement So Far: To this point I would say playing in the State Championship Lacrosse game and scoring a goal in that game. Plans After High School: I plan to attend Michigan State University to study education with an emphasis on Special Education. How has participating in high school athletics benefited you? To me sports is so much more than winning or losing a game. It is be part of a team. Part of a group that works together for a common goal. To be a teammate means support each other through good and bad. It is working every day in practice to get better as an individual and as a team. It has taught me to be efficient with my time and studies. I have lifelong friend and memories! What made you decide to play the sport for which you were named the Penn Station Athlete of the Month? At the age of 12 I was able to attend a MSU volleyball practice. I was immediately impressed by the skill and strength of the girls.

The staff is looking forward to working with you and your student during the next school year. This course description booklet is the first step in planning for the coming year. We hope the information is helpful as you make decisions about your course selections. Enclosed in this packet, you will find a course description for all seventh grade classes offered at Chippewa Middle School for the 2019-2020 school year. The registration form is attached to this packet. This form is due to your student’s homeroom teacher by March 27, 2019. Required courses: Language arts, social studies, mathematics, science and physical education are taken by all students. Elective choices range from a full year to a single trimester course. Parents if you feel you have unique information that would assist us in the placement of your child, please use the back of the registration form to communicate your concerns. It is helpful for us to have this information early for planning purposes. Please know that we will take parental input into thoughtful consideration, but cannot guarantee placement in a particular classroom, with a specific teacher, or with certain friends.     The Stolz Boys: A Three-Generation Chieftains Legacy by Kerry J. Byrnes (OHS Class of ’63) Denny Stolz, the first of The Stolz Boys, actually was an athlete at and a graduate of – not Okemos High – but rather Mason High School (about 11 miles from Okemos), and later a coach throughout his working life. But, as the older brother of Stan Stolz (four years his junior), Denny would serve as a first generation role model for Stan who also played sports for and graduated from Mason High School. Later Stan would become head coach of the boys’ basketball team at Okemos High, following retirement of Bob Baker, the predecessor head coach. Further, Denny Stolz is the uncle of Stan’s son, Dan Stolz, the first of The Stolz Boys to play basketball for and graduate from Okemos High School. Dan’s father, Stan, was Dan’s varsity coach during his junior and senior seasons. Years later Dan followed in his father’s footsteps; when Stan stepped down as head coach of Okemos High boys’ basketball team, he was succeeded by his son Dan who had been Stan’s assistant varsity coach. Years later, Dan’s son, Scott Stolz, also played basketball for the Chieftains under his father’s (Dan’s) tutelage before graduating from Okemos High. Thus, the story of The Stolz Boys actually begins with the years that Denny and Stan played sports for Mason High School. Their athletic careers led to both, over 60 years later, being inducted in 2015 into the Mason High School Athletic Hall of Fame as was reported by the Ingham County Community News on July 23, 2015 (see excerpt below) Further, over the past 20 years, all three senior Stolz Boys (Denny, Stan, and Dan) also were inducted into The Greater Lansing Area Sports Hall of Fame: Stan in 1999, Denny in 2001, and Dan in 2017 (more information on each below), Denny Stolz Dennis “Denny” Earl Stolz (born September 12, 1934) was a graduate of Mason High School (Class of ’51).

Some values, in fact, can be better learned through the involvement in activities such as drama, music, and athletics, rather than in the classroom. Values such as fairness, caring, responsibility, and respect are the foundations of sportsmanship. The focus of high school athletics should be on the learning of these lifelong values. In order for these principles to be taught, it is critical that everyone – players, coaches, parents, and fans – conducts themselves in a sportsman-like manner.
