    RADICALLY [IN]TOLERANT: HOW ENGLISH BAPTISTS CHANGED THE EARLY MODERN TOLERATION DEBATE Caleb Morell Dr. Amy Leonard Dr. Jo Ann Moran Cruz This research was undertaken under the auspices of Georgetown University and was submitted in partial fulfillment for Honors in History at Georgetown University. MAY 2016 I give permission to Lauinger Library to make this thesis available to the public. ABSTRACT The argument of this thesis is that the contrasting visions of church, state, and religious toleration among the Presbyterians, Independents, and Baptists in seventeenth-century England, can best be explained only in terms of their differences over Covenant Theology. That is, their disagreements on the ecclesiological and political levels were rooted in more fundamental disagreements over the nature of and relationship between the biblical covenants. The Baptists developed a Covenant Theology that diverged from the dominant Reformed model of the time in order to justify their practice of believer’s baptism. This precluded the possibility of a national church by making baptism, upon profession of faith, the chief pre- requisite for inclusion in the covenant community of the church. Church membership would be conferred not upon birth but re-birth, thereby severing the links between infant baptism, church membership, and the nation. Furthermore, Baptist Covenant Theology undermined the dominating arguments for state-sponsored religious persecution, which relied upon Old Testament precedents and the laws given to kings of Israel. These practices, the Baptists argued, solely applied to Israel in the Old Testament in a unique way that was not applicable to any other nation. Rather in the New Testament age, Christ has willed for his kingdom to go forth not by the power of the sword but through the preaching of the Word.

    Metrics for Policies for Well-being and Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean Webinar series Measuring people’s perceptions, evaluations and experiences: key issues and best practice from Latin America and the world There is now an increasing consensus that broader measures of societal progress should take into account how people feel about and experience their own lives, alongside information about their objective conditions. The issues that can be potentially included under this heading are broad, ranging from subjective well-being, to trust, political voice, satisfaction with services, and discrimination; measures of these phenomena may include both experiences of specific events (e.g. domestic violence, discrimination in the workplace) and personal evaluations of respondents’ own conditions or of the general state of their economy and society. What all these phenomena have in common is that they refer to features that either only individuals themselves can report about (i.e. they are not directly observable by third parties in large samples of the population) or that, while potentially measurable through objectives measures (e.g. income poverty), may be experienced differently by individuals in those specific conditions. Since the Stiglitz-Sen-Fitoussi Report recommended in 2009 that national statistical offices make efforts to collect more subjective data through their official surveys, there has been a significant increase in both the number of countries that have included such measures in their official surveys and in academic research on these measures. However, in Latin America, the uptake of these measures has been less widespread, with only a handful of countries including relevant questions in their surveys.

ROWLAND August 2011 Copyright Gary A. Rowland 2011 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Historians are divided concerning the ecclesiological thought of seventeenth-century minister John Cotton. Some argue that he supported a church structure based on suppression of lay rights in favor of the clergy, strengthening of synods above the authority of congregations, and increasingly narrow church membership requirements. By contrast, others arrive at virtually opposite conclusions. This thesis evaluates Cotton's correspondence and pamphlets through the lense of moderation to trace the evolution of Cotton's thought on these ecclesiological issues during his ministry in England and Massachusetts. Moderation is discussed in terms of compromise and the abatement of severity in the context of ecclesiastical toleration, the balance between lay and clerical power, and the extent of congregational and synodal authority.
