Considerable advances have been made in identifying gene defects in a juvenile form Periodical Mail of macular degeneration known as Stargardt's disease. This is inherited generally as a recessive trait but may also be inher ited as a dominant trait which means that for a patient with this condition who marries, each child will have a 50% chance of being affected. We have reported results on gene studies in Stargardt's which may well have application for the age related variety as well and it is largely through the help of the Independent Order ofOdd Fellows that we have been able to carry on this research.
