This is unsurprising, given that I had been preparing my entire professional life for the chance to make this show. It started for me when I was 16 and brought Douglas Adams’ wonderful detective to life for the first time, on the student stage of Stowe School in Buckinghamshire. It continued when I did it again at college, and this time Douglas came himself and blessed our enterprise and helped kick-start my career… So 20 years later to have the chance to manifest the Dirkverse was without any exaggeration, a teenage dream come true. When the show was cancelled after two seasons, the sadness was cushioned somewhat by the indefatigable, ineffable love of you: the fandom. You kept petitioning, kept watching, kept loving the show and each other. You took our lonely band of misfit heroes and joined us and made a much bigger and less lonely band of misfit heroes that circled the globe. The show became yours, you loved it as much as we did, and that made both teenage and grown up me very happy indeed. This auction is a way to let each of you own a piece of the show for real, to hold in your hands what you already hold in your hearts. Looking though this beautiful catalogue — thank you to the hard working elves at Profiles in History! — I am transported back to the delight of creation, back when we were dreaming up all this absurd and wonderful stuff and when our Costume Designers (Antoinette Messam and Julie Carnahan) and Production Designers (Katie Byron and Tom Hallbauer) astonishingly transformed even our most ludicrous ideas into palpable reality. I’m also delighted that 42% of our auction proceeds will be going to Save the Rhino International (RIP Pepe, you are not forgotten) and to The Trevor Project to help them further their missions of protecting endangered rhinos and endangered LGBTQ youth when they need it the most. Yours holistically, Arvind Ethan David Executive Producer of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency …and keeper of the flame. @ArvD PAGE 3 310-859-7701 CONDITIONS OF SALE - AGREEMENT BETWEEN Profiles is in compliance, to the fullest extent possible, sale shall be conclusive. • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. However, these sumptuary laws, as they were known,3 were generally a failure, for many reasons. Those who wished to ignore them often could do so with impunity.4 The frequency of such legislation is a sign both of the perceived importance of The author would like to acknowledge the assistance of Professor Bruce Christianson and Ms Susan North in the preparation of this paper.

DRESS LIKE A PILGRIM A Procurement Guide SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 THE MAYFLOWER GUARD General Society of Mayflower Descendants Dress Like a Pilgrim A Procurement Guide By Mayflower Guard As James Baker, noted Pilgrim historian, points out in his recent article in the Mayflower Journal 1 there is a major image problem associated with what clothing and apparel Pilgrims wore. The image of black clothing, buckles and blunderbusses persist in the public mind. To overcome this misperception and to assist in this effort to change public perceptions, the donning of appropriate garments representing what the Pilgrims actually wore should be a major objective for the commemoration of the 1 Baker, James W., Pilgrim Images III, Mayflower Journal Vol. 2, No. 1 [2017], pp 7-19 1 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Mayflower. We the Mayflower descendants need to Dress Like a Pilgrim and wear Pilgrim Appropriate Apparel (PAA). So, what did Pilgrim men and women wear? Fabrics In 17th Century England and in the Netherlands, there were two basic fabrics that were used for clothing, wool and linen. There was combination of wool and linen know has fustian corduroy that was also used, however finding this fabric today is almost impossible. Cotton while available was very rare and very expensive in the early 17th century. Colors We know that the Pilgrims wore a variety of colors in their clothing from probate records where the color of various clothing items were mentioned including the colors violet, blue, green.1,2 The color red was also listed. However, the reds that were used in the early 17th century were more of a brick red and a matter red which is a little more orange in nature than modern reds.

What the Tudor Men Really Wore Copyright 2006, 2010 Kimiko Small, known in the Society as Joan Silvertoppe. All Rights Reserved. www.kimiko1.com Research and hand drawn sketches created by Kimiko Small, March-April 2006, except where noted. This was originally developed for Margo Anderson's Historical Costume Patterns, and has been modified and updated for use in the Collegium Caidis class on April 10, 2010. Shirts The Low-Necked Shirt The low-necked shirt sketch is based on early Tudor men’s shirts seen in various images. Its style is fading by the early 1530s, although it can be seen here and there. The body is finely pleated into the neckline that would be held by embroidery. For more info on creating this type of shirt, please go to the following yahoogroup: Pleatwork Embroidery ( Smocking) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pleatwork/ The High-Necked Shirt This shirt is based on an image of Henry VIII in 1536. As can be seen in the detail image of Henry, the shoulder line at the left shows a short shoulder area (about half the shoulder length) with a V where the sleeves are attached. The collar area is most likely finely pleated with decorative stitching to hold the pleats in place ( Posavad, 18), but a collar would be easier for most people to create. The small frill or ruffle, from which the later ruff is derived, tops the shirt collar. This ruffle is optional, as some images do not show a ruffle. The collar is open at center front and is usually closed with 2 shirt strings.

Pan Macmillan June 2021 Highlights LEAD NON-FICTION When the Village Sleeps Sindiwe Magona ‘All the way to school, and all day long, the same thought kept turning and turning in Busi’s mind. He will not forget my birthday. It is also his. No way could he forget his own birthday. Surely he remembers he shares it with me, his beloved daughter. We spoke about it during our weekly ‘visits’, as he calls our scheduled Sunday afternoon telephone talks. And today is not any old ordinary birthday, either. THIRTEEN! I am a teenager at last. Certified, verified, glorified. Should I call him? No, it is a special day for me: he must call first! Thina sobabini? We two? We jive! Except, that whole long day, no call came from her father.’ When the Village Sleeps is a visionary novel about what the loss of identity and dignity do to a people afflicted by decades of brokenness. Told through the lives and spirits of four generations of the amaTolo women, including The Old, who speak wisdom with ever-increasing urgency, it moves between the bustling township setting of Kwanele and the different rhythms of rural village life. It recalls the sweeping sagas of the great A.C. Jordan and the Dhlomo brothers and invokes the poetry of S.E.K. Mqhayi, while boldly exploring urgent and contemporary issues. An ode to the complex strengths of South African women, it is also a powerful call to respect the earth that nurtures human life, and to live in self-sufficiency and harmony with the environment and each other.

Not Your Mother’s Library Transcript Episode 19: Audiobooks are for Listeners (Brief intro music) Leah: Hello, and welcome to Not Your Mother's Library, a readers’ advisory podcast from the Oak Creek Public Library. I'm Leah. Rachel: And I’m Rachel. Leah: Last month we discussed OCPL’s new board game collection. Be sure to tune into episode 18 for more information on how to check out any number of games, or feel free to ask a member of staff. This episode, though, we have yet another collection to introduce, and there’s a small clue in the title. The library has offered audiobooks in physical and digital format for a long time now, but today Rachel and I are excited to tell you about our new playaways. Rachel: Yes, this is very exciting, because playaways are a great way for young children to enjoy listening to books if they haven’t yet learned the ins and outs of a CD or MP3 player. For those of you who have never heard of these things before, let me give you a brief rundown. Playaways are battery operated audio players that come with prerecorded stories, almost all of which are available in high definition. So, like an audiobook, but you don’t need a device of your own—or an Internet connection—to make them work. They are pretty small and weigh next to nothing. This makes them portable and easy to hold with little hands. Which…that’s a pretty cute visual, don’t you think? Leah: I do.
