EUROPEAN PREMIERE OF BREATHE TO OPEN THE 61ST BFI LONDON FILM FESTIVAL NEW OFFICIAL TRAILER AND POSTER RELEASED Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy star in Andy Serkis’ BREATHE, STXInternational. Embargoed until 9.30am GMT, Thursday 29 June, 2017 LONDON – Thursday 29 June, 2017: The 61st BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® is delighted to announce that this year’s Opening Night gala will be Andy Serkis’ feature directorial debut, BREATHE. Based on the true story of Robin Cavendish, BREATHE is a heart-warming and highly emotional celebration of bravery and human possibility, a love story about living every breath as though it’s your last. The film stars Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge) as Cavendish and Claire Foy (The Crown) as his wife Diana. BREATHE will receive its European premiere on Wednesday 4 October at the Odeon Leicester Square. Director Andy Serkis, producer Jonathan Cavendish and lead actors Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy are expected to attend along with other members of the cast and crew. There will be a live cinecast of all the excitement from Leicester Square and simultaneous screenings taking place at cinemas across the UK. From a script by twice Academy Award-nominated screenwriter William Nicholson (Everest, Les Misérables and Gladiator), Andy Serkis (globally known for his performances including, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) delivers a hugely impressive directorial debut with this inspirational true story of love without limits. Adventurous and charismatic, Robin Cavendish has his whole life ahead of him when he is paralysed by polio whilst in Africa and given just months to live.

The Other America of Paul Auster, Jim Jarmusch and Tom Waits Author Tedde, Adriano Antonio Published 2019-10-23 Thesis Type Thesis (PhD Doctorate) School School of Hum, Lang & Soc Sc DOI https://doi.org/10.25904/1912/2054 Copyright Statement The author owns the copyright in this thesis, unless stated otherwise. Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2019 0 ABSTRACT This thesis employs popular culture texts (works of literature, film, and popular music) as companions to the understanding of contemporary America. It is about artworks that form a cultural resistance that enables the appreciation of social issues and cultural decline in the United States. The authors of these artworks are novelist Paul Auster, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, and musician Tom Waits. Born between the late 1940s and the early 1950s, in different parts of the United States, Auster, Jarmusch, and Waits have produced a series of works that share strong similarities. In their novels, films, and songs, they portray an imagined “Other America” that is in stark contrast with the idyllic vision of the American Dream. Their America does not coincide with conventional middle-class values and goals of success, money and social upward mobility. It is an open, tolerant, and egalitarian country inhabited by marginalized “other Americans” who never escape from poverty and failure.

  • Than Digital Makeup: the Visual Effects Industry As Hollywood Diaspora
More Than Digital Makeup: The Visual Effects Industry as Hollywood Diaspora By Sarah K. Hellström Department of Cinema Studies Master’s Thesis 15 hp Master Course 30 hp, VT 2013 Supervisor: Dr. Patrick Vonderau If I hear one more person who comes up to me and complains about [how]‘computer-music has no soul’ then I will go furious, you know. ‘Cause of course the computer is just a tool. And if there is no soul in computer-music then it's because nobody put it there and that's not the computers role, it's the role of the songwriter. He puts down his soul in the song if he wants to. A guitar will never write a song and a computer will never write a song, these are just tools.i - Björk Title: More Than Digital Makeup: The Visual Effects Industry as Hollywood Diaspora Author’s name: Sarah K. Hellström Supervisor: Dr. Patrick Vonderau Abstract This thesis assesses the marginal field (niche unit) of visual effects while taking into account visible and invisible vfx in virtual and actual geographies in Hollywood movies as part of industry-level studies, all the while seeking to bridge the gap between traditional, theoretical approaches of cinema studies and practitioner experience in the context of production culture. The focus of this essay remains on the many temporal aspects of production processes that identify vfx film production as chief, and vfx for television as subsequential. Encouraging scholars to consider a previously limited and repeatedly mislabeled area by demonstrating the pandemic presence of effects and its workers as a form of Hollywood diaspora, this thesis also seeks to demonstrate the need for involvement by means of scholar-practitioner methodologies.

  • 1. Introduction Everyone Likes Going to the Movies, Many of Which Play A
    1. Introduction Everyone likes going to the movies, many of which play a major cultural role in the modern world. This talk is all about the role that maths plays in the movies, and hence indirectly, on the culture of the modern world. At one level it may not appear to play much if a role at all, as the vast majority of movies do not seem to mention mathematics at all. This is not always the case of course. Maths does figure in the plot of such blockbusters. One of these is Jurassic Park, with Jeff Goldblum playing the mathematician concerned with the stability of the park and how this can be explained by using ‘chaos theory’. Another is Sherlock Holmes, in which (in the film Sherlock Holmes: a game of shadows) the great mathematician Professor Moriaty can be seen in front of a blackboard (designed by the genuine mathematician Prof Alain Goriely at the University of Oxford), which gives away the entire plot in mathematical form. Anyone who went to my last lecture will also have seen the role played by the maths of Big Data in the film Bridget Jones’s Baby. Some recent films have even featured real or fictional mathematicians as the central character, notable amongst these are The Imitation Game, about Alan Turing, A Beautiful Mind about John Nash, The Man Who Knew Infinity about Ramanujan (and others) and Good Will Hunting. Whilst it is very good (in my opinion) that mathematics is seen in the plot of these films (and I hope that we will see many more such films, for example a film about Galois would have it all in my opinion), it is not that aspect of maths which I will be discussing in this lecture.

It tells the story of Dr. Parnassus and his extraordinary ‘Imaginarium’, a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Doctor Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. An inveterate gambler, thousands of years ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr. Nick, in which he won immortality. Centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr. Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his daughter reached her 16th birthday, she would become the property of Mr Nick. Valentina is now rapidly approaching this ‘coming of age’ milestone and Dr. Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate. Mr. Nick arrives to collect but, always keen to make a bet, renegotiates the wager.
