  • Former Ohio State Cornerback Eli Apple Agrees to One-Year Deal with the Carolina Panthers
Former Ohio State Cornerback Eli Apple Agrees To One-Year Deal With The Carolina Panthers Nearly two months after his free-agent deal with the Las Vegas Raiders fell through, former Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple agreed to a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers. The deal was first reported on Thursday by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who noted the deal is worth $3 million and includes a $750,000 signing bonus. The team later confirmed the signing. We've agreed to terms with Eli Apple! pic.twitter.com/u4FmMgfvUJ — Carolina Panthers (@Panthers) May 28, 2020 A first-round selection (10th overall) of the New York Giants in the 2016 NFL Draft, Apple struggled with injuries early in his career. He was also notably suspended by the team following an argument with a coach and called a “cancer” by teammate Landon Collins. Apple was then traded to New Orleans just five games into the 2018 season for a fourth- and seventh- round pick in the 2019 and 2020 drafts, respectively. He started 25 games with the Saints over the last two years, recording 13 pass break ups and two interceptions. The 24-year-old actually agreed in principle to a one-year, $6 million deal with the Raiders during the first week of free agency in March. But two sides were never able to finalize the agreement, and the team opted to former Cleveland Browns safety Damarious Randall at half the cost instead. Apple — who helped the Buckeyes to a national championship as a redshirt freshman in 2014 and was the most valuable defensive player of the 2016 Fiesta Bowl — will be reunited in Carolina with former Ohio State wide receiver Curtis Samuel and offensive lineman Branden Bowen.

A lot of great work has been put in over the last few months by our players, coaches and staff, and we are all looking forward to getting the 2015 season started in late July. It is a very exciting time for everyone in our organization and we hope it is for our alumni as well. Every day we walk into the practice facility at 4949 Marie P. DeBartolo Way, we are reminded of the great tra- dition of this franchise and the people, such as our alumni, who have helped to write its proud history. It was important to this organization to reinforce our feelings of gratitude and appreciation for your contri- butions and continued support before the season gets underway. The dedication you have shown to this fran- chise and the sacrifices you and your families have made are certainly recognized and will never be forgotten. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Charles Haley on his upcoming induction into the Pro Foot- ball Hall of Fame and the Edward J. DeBartolo, Sr. 49ers Hall of Fame. In the game of football, acknowledge- ments such as those not only celebrate the great individual accomplishments of one man, but they also celebrate the contributions of those around him – his teammates and coaches.

  • Rating the Packers: Week 3 at Seahawks Capers’ Plans Overwhelm Chicago Again by Bob Mcginn – Milwaukee Journal‐Sentinel Posted: Sept 25, 2012
Rating the Packers: Week 3 at Seahawks Capers’ plans overwhelm Chicago again By Bob McGinn – Milwaukee Journal‐Sentinel Posted: Sept 25, 2012 Green Bay ‐ Green Bay ‐ The sun rose Tuesday, as it did Wednesday and will each day of the Green Bay Packers' season. As heinous as the final seconds might have been Monday in Seattle, all the Packers can do is look ahead rather than back. Since winning 19 games in a row, they're 3‐4 in their last seven after a crushing 14‐12 defeat against the Seahawks. At this point, the Packers are a team with little identity. At CenturyLink Field, the passing game ‐ the crème de la crème in the National Football League ‐ was barely passable given atrocious protection and a lousy performance by the wide receivers. Here is a rating of the Packers against the Seahawks, with their 1 to 5 football totals in parentheses: RECEIVERS (1) From snap to end, here were the times of Aaron Rodgers' eight sacks: 3.0 seconds, 2.9, 3.7, 4.5, 4.3, 5.4, 2.6 and 4.9 seconds. Time after time, CBs Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman manned up against Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings and James Jones and made them look ordinary. The best by far was Jones, who caught five of his seven targeted throws for 55 yards (four first downs). He handled the tight, aggressive coverage better than his teammates and was much better after the catch, too. Recognizing that Jones was playing well, position coach Edgar Bennett played him almost as much (50 snaps) as Nelson (54) and Jennings (53).
