Johnson (212) 875-5718; [email protected] BERNARD LABADIE TO RETURN TO NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC TO CONDUCT ALL-MOZART PROGRAM Flute Concerto No. 2 with Principal Flute ROBERT LANGEVIN Exsultate, jubilate with Soprano YING FANG in Her Philharmonic Debut Symphony No. 31, Paris Symphony No. 39 December 1–3, 2016 Bernard Labadie will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct an all-Mozart program: the Flute Concerto No. 2, with Principal Flute Robert Langevin as soloist; Exsultate, jubilate with soprano Ying Fang in her Philharmonic debut; Symphony No. 31, Paris; and Symphony No. 39. The program takes place Thursday, December 1, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, December 2 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, December 3 at 8:00 p.m. The concerts open with three youthful works written when Mozart was 17, 21, and 22 years old, and close with the darker Symphony No. 39, written three years before his death. A leading specialist in the Baroque and Classical repertoire, Bernard Labadie led Mozart’s Requiem in his most recent appearance with the Philharmonic, in November 2013. The New York Times described this performance as “glowing … one of the most cohesive I have heard.” These concerts will mark Principal Flute Robert Langevin’s first of Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmonic. Soprano Ying Fang has been acclaimed for her performances of Mozart, including her Metropolitan Opera debut in The Marriage of Figaro in September 2014, and Don Giovanni with The Juilliard School in April 2012. -
Dear Music Lover, Welcome to the 23Rd Year of Music at the National
Dear Music Lover, Welcome to the 23rd year of music at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. We are delighted to have been able to reschedule two of the concerts cancelled last season due to COVID-19 and to have added a third. This season, concerts will begin in the spring of 2021. Our concern for audience and artist safety led us to delay the season with the hope that it will be safer to congregate in person at that time. However we anticipate at this time that the concerts will be virtual. If things do change, we will certainly notify you. Our season kicks off on March 31 with the acclaimed McDermott Trio, featuring Anne-Marie, Kerry, and Maureen McDermott, with master violist Paul Neubauer. The McDermott Trio has been recognized as one of the most exciting trios of their generation and Neubauer has been called "a master musician" by the New York Times due to his exceptional musicality and effortless playing. On May 12, we welcome the talented Stefania Dovhan, who has performed at many opera houses including the Royal Opera House, the New York City Opera, and the Baltimore Lyric Opera. We will close out the season on June 2 with the amazing violinist Jennifer Koh, who is known for her intense, commanding performances delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance. Since 1998, we have presented more than sixty-nine free concerts featuring emerging and established women musicians who have brought to life the halls of this great museum with their artistry and talent. His Piano Sonata (1938) reflected his Leonard Bernstein ties to Copland, with links also to the music of Hindemith and Stravinsky, and his Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (1942) was similarly grounded in a neoclassical aesthetic. The composer Paul Bowles praised the clarinet sonata as having a "tender, sharp, singing quality," as being "alive, tough, integrated." It was a prescient assessment, which ultimately applied to Bernstein’s music in all genres. Bernstein’s professional breakthrough came with exceptional force and visibility, establishing him as a stunning new talent. In 1943, at age twenty-five, he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic, replacing Bruno Walter at the last minute and inspiring a front-page story in the New York Times.
