Data contained in this edition were supplied by the various companies listed, to whom due acknowledgement is made. Where available email and website addresses are included. Further details relating to South Africa's industrial minerals are given in the Directorate’s annual review of the South African Mineral Industry (SAMI). We hope that this directory will once again prove itself valuable to the producers, processors, marketers and consumers of South Africa's salt. Lake brine is also used as feed in conventional solar ponds. Underground deposits of halite or rock salt, mined by room and pillar, or solution mining which forms a large underground cavity. Vacuum evaporation – brine dehydration to crystallise salt in a series of multiple-effect evaporators operated under vacuum to reduce process temperatures. Salt is critical to human and animal health. It is a common part of our everyday lives that is rarely thought of, as it is a natural resource that must be discovered, boiled/evaporated or mined, processed, and marketed before it is used for various end uses such as a food processing additive and flavour enhancer. Over 100 countries produce significant amounts of salt with many others on a small scale. China is the biggest producer of salt in the world, accounting for approximately 22 percent, with United States providing about 16 percent and Germany and France about 7 to 6 percent. Other major producers are India, Australia, Mexico and Canada. South Africa produces less than 50% of its salt requirements, with the shortfall being made up by imports from Australia, Namibia and Botswana. The main uses of salt are found in: Chemical production; Cooking and food processing; Agriculture; Other industrial uses such as oil and gas exploration, textile dyeing, aluminium refining, glazing, soap making and leather tanning. The biggest consumer of salt is the chemical industry accounting for more than 60 percent of the total world production. The second largest consumer of salt is the food industries, which use approximately 30 percent. The balance is used for water treatment, production of cooling brines and other smaller application. SALT PRODUCTION PROCESS In 2013, South Africa had 27 salt pans. Salt resources in South Africa are confined to underground brines associated with inland saltpans, coastal saltpans and seawater. The majority of inland pans lie on rocks of the Karoo Sequence near Vryburg in the North West Province to Hopetown on the eastern border of the Northern Cape. Near Waterpoort, at the foot of the Soutpansberg in Limpopo province, a saltpan occurs on basalt of Lebombo Group. Salt refiners & packers was the largest producer in 2012, followed by Dwaggas salt, Vrysoutspan- Kalahari and Swartkops. These four companies together accounted for approximately 74 percent of the South Africa's salt production. The aforementioned companies are owned as followers: I. Salt Refiners and packers, owned by the Sutherland & Krok families II. Dwaggas salt works, owned by G Nel III. Saamweek Soutwerke Bk IV. Swartkops seeSout, owned by G Schombee SA produces salt by solar evaporation of brines method (Fig 1). In general, the production methods do not differ materially from those implemented elsewhere in the world. 2 Mining Products Principal /Processing Applications Pumping of brine Methods Chemical industry Coarse Concentration Salt dams Hides and skin Crystallisation ponds Animal feeds Wash Household Processed Mill Salt Other Figure 1: Basic flow diagram of salt production Notes: Various grades of salt are available in South Africa: Grade I coarse or milled; >95% NaCl, 1.5% SO4 Grade II coarse or milled; 85-95% NaCl Grade III coarse; 75-85% NaCl Grade IV coarse; < 75% NaCl or contaminated grades I, II , III 3 PRODUCERS OF SALT - 1 MINE PRODUCER SOURCE PRODUCT AND MARKETING AND CODE PACKAGING DISTRIBUTION Controlling Group 1. Free State Province Biodiversity Plan: Technical Report v1.0. Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs. Internal Report. 1. Summary $what is a biodiversity plan This report contains the technical information that details the rationale and methods followed to produce the first terrestrial biodiversity plan for the Free State Province. Because of low confidence in the aquatic data that were available at the time of developing the plan, the aquatic component is not included herein and will be released as a separate report. The biodiversity plan was developed with cognisance of the requirements for the determination of bioregions and the preparation and publication of bioregional plans (DEAT, 2009). To this extent the two main products of this process are: • A map indicating the different terrestrial categories (Protected, Critical Biodiversity Areas, Ecological Support Areas, Other and Degraded) • Land-use guidelines for the above mentioned categories This plan represents the first attempt at collating all terrestrial biodiversity and ecological data into a single system from which it can be interrogated and assessed.
