LUCRETIUS -- the Nature of Things Trans
REDUX EDITION* LUCRETIUS The Nature of Things Translated and with Notes by A. E. STALLINGS Introduction by RICHARD JENKYNS PENGUIN BOOKS * See the release notes for details LINE NUMBERING: The lines of the poem are numbered by tens, with the exception of line II.1021 which was marked instead of line II.1020 (unclear whether intended or by error) and the lines I.690 and I.1100 which were skipped altogether. The line numbering follows the 1947 Latin edition of Cyril Bailey and not this English translation (confusing but helpful when referencing other translations/commentaries). As stated in the "Note on the Text and Translation", the author joined together and restructured lines for the needs of this translation. Consequently, the number of actual lines between adjacent multiples of ten (or "decades") are often a couple of lines less or more than the ten of the referenced Latin edition. As far as line references in the notes are concerned, they are with maybe a few exceptions in alignment with the numbering of their closest multiple of ten. MISSING SECTIONS: As mentioned in the "Note on the Text and Translation", missing sections (or "lacunae") of which there are a few, are denoted with three dots and/or an explanation enclosed in square brackets. LINE STRUCTURE: The structure of the translation is rhymed couplets, meaning that you'll mostly (though not exclusively) have consecutive pairs of rhymed lines throughout the entire poem. The poem itself is broken up with occasional standard line breaks, as one would expect, but also with a more peculiar feature that might best be described as indented line breaks. -

On the Nature of Things & Environmental Decision
ON THE NATURE OF THINGS & ENVIRONMENTAL DECISION-MAKING by Vitor Machado Lira A practicum submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science (Natural Resources and Environment) at the University of Michigan April 2015 Faculty advisors: Dr. Allen Burton Dr. Arun Agrawal Dr. Joe Arvai Abstract This project compiles knowledge from personal eXperiences and reflections, and graduate level coursework and research at the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment, and it encompasses a) influential fields of study that shape decision-making in relationship to the environment: environmental conservation, environmental governance and corporate sustainability; and b) cases and eXamples that nudge human awareness, education and behavior in the direction of environmentally-conscious lifestyles through environmental citizenship. Conducted alongside experienced professionals and professors, this work gathers insights on past, current and potential scenarios for human agency, belief, and comprehension of the environment. Its main goals are to inform and push the reader to think deeply about and act on environmentally sensitive matters through personable and pragmatic eXamples of work done in the United States and abroad. Therefore, I will be ‘bringing home’ the seriousness and the realities of climate change to enable people to grasp the dimensions of past and potential contributions, both positive and negative, to this worldwide phenomenon via the content of this practicum. In the face of the alarming threat of anthropogenic climate change and the lack of philosophical inquiry of men’s ventures and reasoning, I was spurred to produce this piece so that readers could be enlightened on part of the intricate causal web that eXists between human agency and environmental phenomena. -

Introduction Henry Crabb Robinson (1775-1867), the noted diarist, traveler, and friend of nearly every important literary figure of the first half of the nineteenth century, considered the Wordsworths of Rydal Mount, along with their relations and friends in the Lake District, London, and in various other locations, as his most important social circle outside his own family. His friendship with Mary Wordsworth (1770-1859), whom he first met in 1812, spanned more than 45 years. Initially, William and Dorothy were his primary correspondents, but after Dorothy’s mental condition deteriorated in the 1830s, Robinson transferred his attentions to Mary. If any letters passed between Robinson and Mary Wordsworth prior to 1833, they are no longer extant, nor are they mentioned in Robinson’s diary. Between 1833 and 1858, however, 129 letters (some attached to letters to other recipients) have survived, with 83 written by Robinson and 46 by Mary Wordsworth. Ninety-two of these letters reside at Dr Williams’s Library, London, the primary depository of Robinson’s massive manuscript collection.
