Eventually I connected the dots and realized that not only was Darwyn Cooke my favorite Graphic Ink the DC Comics Art of Darwyn Cooke, but he was also an artistic and writing genius, a truly special and gifted giant of the comic books world who has never — and will never — be replaced. The covers in particular show how Cooke was able to create a scene and evoke wonder and feeling with only a few colors and brushstrokes. And while you might think that his artwork surpasses his Graphic Ink the DC Comics Art of Darwyn Cooke, prepare to be delightfully mistaken. Cooke could take any character, literally any character, and make them shine. Unfortunately, DC missed the boat in several respects with this collection. The first evokes the spirit of Jack London, set in the Canadian wilds during winter, and is heavy on shading to contrast the vast amounts of snow, while the second is European ligne claire style. Grist has a kinetic fluency to his writing and Robinson pieces a meticulous patchwork together, yet Cooke interprets them equally well. Cooke bestows a grace otherwise absent. Dozens of cover reproductions over the pages display an enlightened and eye-grabbing sense of composition in producing iconic images. The graphic influences are many, and accompanied by a vibrant colour sense, drawing the vision to the desired portion of the illustration. I focus on the DC Animated Universe, the popular adaptation of DC Comics characters and concepts into all-ages programming. This adapted universe started with Batman: The Animated Series and comprised several shows on multiple networks, all of which fit into a shared universe based on their comic book counterparts. The adaptation of these properties is heavily reliant to intertextuality across DC Comics media. The shared universe developed within the television medium acted as an early example of comic book media adapting the idea of shared universes, a process that has been replicated with extreme financial success by DC and Marvel (in various stages of fruition). I address the process of adapting DC Comics properties in television, dividing it into “strict” or “loose” adaptations, as well as derivative adaptations that add new material to the comic book canon. This process was initially slow, exploding after the first series (Batman: The Animated Series) changed networks and Saturday morning cartoons flourished, allowing for more opportunities for producers to create content. References, crossover episodes, and the later series Justice League Unlimited allowed producers to utilize this shared universe to develop otherwise impossible adaptations that often became lasting additions to DC Comics publishing.

I examine a broad selection of texts including graphic autobiography, biography, memoir, and diary in order to argue that writers and readers can, through these graphic narratives, engage with an eclectic and eccentric understanding of Canadian historical subjects. Contemporary Canadian comics are important for Canadian literature and life writing because they acknowledge the importance of contemporary urban and marginal subcultures and function as representations of people who occasionally experience economic scarcity. I focus on stories of “ordinary” people because their stories have often been excluded from accounts of Canadian public life and cultural history. Following the example of Barbara Godard, Heather Murray, and Roxanne Rimstead, I re- evaluate Canadian literatures by considering the importance of marginal literary products. Canadian comics authors rarely construct narratives about representative figures standing in place of and speaking for a broad community; instead, they create what Murray calls “history with a human face . the face of the daily, the ordinary” (“Literary History as Microhistory” 411).

But women’s roles in comics have often been diminished as they become victims, damsels in distress, and sidekicks.
