In 2016, our church family established a new tradition: Retreat. It’s easy to spell and pronounce and not terribly hard to define or understand. However, this simplicity masks a word full of power and significance. RETREAT It’s a verb that instills fear, trepidation, hostility telling us to flee, run, fall back, escape; but it also encourages us to find peace by purposefully withdrawing for respite and solitude. As a noun, it symbolizes this fear, often referencing defeat and decline while simultaneously providing a haven for refuge, reflection and sanctuary – in isolation or amongst others. Whether you are actively running from or towards something in your life or looking for that space to find recovery, safety or peace, the FBG Retreat, Bless Your Heart, has a place for you. Below you will find a schedule of events for our time together, with additional details to follow. Friday, March 1 7:00pm Retreat Check-in and Welcome Party featuring Friday and Saturday sessions will take place at the Cappuccino Funk, hors d’oeuvres and cash bar Westin Poinsett Hotel at 120 S. Main Street in downtown Greenville. Saturday, March 2 10:00am Session 1 Sunday Worship will be in the FBG Sanctuary. 11:30am Lunch 1:00pm Session 2 Childcare for infants through 5th grade will be provided Sunday, March 3 onsite at First Baptist Greenville. 10:30am Worship – FBG Sanctuary While the weekend dates remain the same, we’ve changed the schedule to provide a new experience for all attendees, whether this is your first time or you are a veteran of the occasion. Having spent the last 3 yearsin retreat to the mountains, it seemed like we were being called this year to find retreat here at home. We look forward to sharing this with you in just a few short weeks. For more information and to register, visit here: https://firstbaptistgreenville.com/churchwide-retreat/ Beyond wonderful. KATE CAMPBELL BIOGRAPHY Kate Campbell is a southern singer-songwriter who writes and sings memorable folk songs infused with undercurrents of delta blues, folk, pop, and country that originate from a musical landscape spanning the less-travelled back roads from Nashville to Muscle Shoals to Memphis. Over the course of 20+ years since her acclaimed debut album Songs from the Levee, she has resisted the temptation to follow musical trends but instead chooses to set the pace for her unique musical journey clearly palpable in her latest release Damn Sure Blue, a heart-felt collection of tunes that pays a respectful nod of admiration to the Man in Black and reverberates with the soulful sounds of award-winning Americana guitar whiz and producer Will Kimbrough. Kate’s endearing, clear-water vocal delivery and her eloquent gift for storytelling have drawn repeated comparisons to such bastions of the Southern literary tradition as Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, and William Faulkner. Her easy command of a full range of American musical styles has earned Campbell recognition as a formidable talent by critics. Time Out London proclaimed her a “major talent” while Chicago Daily Herald described her as a “world-class singer-songwriter.” Perhaps Roots Time best summarized the extensive arc of Kate’s 18-album career by stating, “What a great talent Kate Campbell represents is made clear by the legends in music that appear as guest artists on her albums.” Americana stalwarts Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Nanci Griffith, Guy Clark, Maura O’Connell, John Prine, Mac McAnally, Buddy Miller, Spooner Oldham, and the heart of the Muscle Shoals classic soul and R&B hit- making machine are both admirers and collaborators in her distinctly literate musical vision.

  • Artist: Jim Lauderdale Album: Country Super Hits Vol 1 Label: Yep Roc

Online Issue 5 WINTER 2008 in this issue MEN OF ACTION MURRY HAMMOND JD WILKES TEDDY THOMPSON JASON AND THE SCORCHERS DB Harris (Deron Braxton to his family) is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He notes of his home State that “Hank Williams, Louvin Brothers, and the Maddox family had some roots there, but as far as what got me first it was probably bluegrass. From there it was sort of a porthole into country for me. I'm really glad I found some real key influences that turned me on to what I do now." He recorded an album Deep Dark Black having written the songs while down in Mexico and recorded it back in Alabama. He recorded the follow up Can I Return These Flowers? in Austin, Texas drawing from such talented local players as Eddie Perez to make n album that was described by one local writer as a blend of Dwight Yoakam, Chris Isaak, and The Mavericks. A fair description of the mix between the singing styles of Roy Orbison and the Bakersfield sounds of Buck Owens and Wynn Stewart. DB was doing a double marketing degree from Auburn University whikle parsuing his musical career. For his next release he added more guitars, some groovy Farfisa organ, a hint of surf pop and the result was Contagious Heartache, a concept record of sorts that looked at the trials and tribulations of heartache that was at times darker than the previous album but without losing its sense of humour. In January 2006 DB moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he recorded his latest album Country For Groovers which has just been released.
