3 Pain, Misery, Hate and Love All at Once A THEOLOGY OF SUFFERING I remember the period well. It was the months following the 1992 LA Riots. We were young, full of energy, and having bore witness to the destructive forces that tore our community apart, we wanted to change the direction of the ‘hood. So what did we do? We organized gangs, nonprofits and people with like-minded worldviews to create something that had never been done, a gang truce. A fifteen-city organizational effort involving gang leaders, commu- nity organizations and rappers like Tupac, the then lesser known Snoop Dogg and former members of NWA, as well as people who wanted to see a change from the violence of the 1980s, put together posters, banners, flyers and events that helped put a message of peace out in the commu- nity. Large gangs like the Crips and the Bloods came to park BBQ’s to celebrate the newfound peace. MTV covered many of the events. For the first time it seemed as though urban peace was beginning to take shape. I was truly amazed. Especially being as angry as I was after the Rodney King trial verdict, I was beginning to see some change that I could be a part of. We decided that each city needed to take their concerns to City SoulOfHipHop.indb 75 4/26/10 11:13:30 AM 76 THE SOUL OF HIP HOP Hall. We had hoped to file for a “state of emergency” to begin receiv- ing federal funds to clean up our ‘hoods and begin to restore our fam- ilies.

  • WHERE the GLOBAL MUSIC COMMUNITY CONNECTS SXSW Music Announces Second Keynote Speaker
P.O. Box 685289 | Austin, Texas | 78768 T: 512.467.7979 | F: 512.451.0754 sxsw.com SXSW MUSIC - WHERE THE GLOBAL MUSIC COMMUNITY CONNECTS SXSW Music Announces Second Keynote Speaker February 9, 2016 - Austin, Texas - The South by Southwest® Music Conference and Festival (SXSW®) is pleased to announce its second Keynote Speaker, James A. Prince of Rap-A-Lot Records. Mr. Prince's Keynote conversation with Rap-A-Lot artist Bun B will take place Thursday, March 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Ballroom D of the Austin Convention Center. James A. Prince is the founder and CEO of Rap-A-Lot Records and is the pioneering spirit behind the Houston- based, multi-million dollar record label. Founded in 1986, Mr. Prince started Rap-A-Lot in part as an incentive to keep a group of neighborhood teenagers in school and off the streets of Houston's notorious 5th Ward. His desire to help these youth stay in school launched what would eventually become the platinum-selling group Geto Boys. The creation of Rap-A-Lot and the Geto Boys was the beginning of the ascent of southern Hip Hop. The label produced numerous hit albums and singles, accumulated over two-dozen Gold and Platinum records that include artists like the Geto Boys, Scarface, Do or Die, Big Mike, Bun B, Tela, Devin the Dude, Zero, and many more artists. Mr. Prince has negotiated numerous distribution deals for Rap-A-Lot with Virgin Records, EMI, Asylum (Warner), Fontana (Universal) and most recently Red (Sony). More recently, he partnered with his son, Jas Prince to discover Hip Hop superstar Drake and took him from performing on MySpace, to being one of the most recognizable musical artists of this generation.

  • Text Structure 2
Text Structure 5 Directions: Read the passages and on a sheet of paper, put the information from each passage into an appropriate graphic organizer. The following graphic organizers are examples. Feel free to make changes if necessary. Chronological Sequence Cause and Effect Problem and Solution Compare and Contrast 1. Tornados and Hurricanes Hurricanes and tornados are both amazing yet deadly natural phenomena. Both generate deadly conditions, but in different ways. Tornados are likely to damage people and property with their high winds, which go up to 300 miles per hour, but hurricanes are generally more feared for their flooding. Also, hurricanes can produce tornados, which makes them quite dangerous indeed. 2. Where Did This Tornado Come From? No one knows exactly what causes tornados, but some scientists believe that when warm air meets cold air, a tornado may form. The reason for this is that the warm air is lighter than the cold air, so it rises up fast and meets different winds moving different directions. Under the right conditions, this can cause a tornado. Though there is still much mystery surrounding tornados, many people believe that when warm moist air meets cool dry air, tornados can result. 3. Twista Carl Terrell Mitchell, better known by his stage name Twista, was born in 1972. Nineteen years later Mitchell’s first album, “Runnin' Off at da Mouth,” debuted. In 1997, after appearing on Do or Die's hit "Po Pimp,” Twista was signed to Atlantic Records. Under that label he released “Adrenaline Rush” and formed the group Speedknot Mobstaz in 1998.

  • Don't Judge a Man by the Color of His
DON’T JUDGE A MAN BY THE COLOR OF HIS RAG: THE REALITY AND RESISTANCE OF GANGSTA RAP AMONG LOS ANGELES GANG MEMBERS A Thesis by MAMIE C. DAVIS Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Chair of Committee, Antonio C. La Pastina Committee Members, Josh Heuman Judith Hamera Head of Department, J. Kevin Barge August 2014 Major Subject: Communication Copyright 2014 Mamie C. Davis ABSTRACT This thesis shares interactive, performative stories regarding the intersection of gang culture and gangsta rap music. For a total of twenty-one days in a nine month span, I conducted ethnographic participant observation and in-depth interviews with sixteen former gang members and gangsta rap artists. While there I encountered, rode around, and hung with countless gang members belonging to both Crips and Bloods in South Central, Long Beach, Compton, and Inglewood. Although focusing on historic influences, this thesis travels through the present and positions itself as a future, utopic plot. The time period discussed in the thesis, 1986-1996, coincides with the first wave of gangsta rap and the years of active gangbanging and/or music training for these men. In the time discussed, the narratives and interviews have collectively shared one story: music was used to resist oppression while also reinforcing the oppressed mindset. By categorizing gangsta rap as a dystopian performative, I provide insight on the reality of music through reception and resistance of the LA Black Community. Through my journey to Los Angeles, I discovered that the reality of the music is deeper than the subculture; instead, it is planted in the larger community.
