Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This study presents a detailed analysis of the liturgical music of Benjamin Britten (1913- 1976). In addition to several pieces Britten wrote for the Anglican liturgy and one for the Roman Catholic Church, a number of other works, not originally composed for liturgical purpose, but which fonction well in a liturgical setting, are included, providing a substantial repertory which has hitherto received little critical commentary. Although not occupying a place of central importance in the composer’s musical output, it is argued that a detailed examination of this liturgical music is important to form a fuller understanding of Britten’s creative character; it casts additional light on the composer’s technical procedures (in particular his imaginative exploitation of tonal structure which embraced modality, free-tonality and twelve-tone ideas) and explores further Britten’s commitment to the idea of a composer serving society.

Its role in Christian theology and spirituality has a much longer history, but by the beginning of the twentieth century, its expressive potential had not been significantly recognized in liturgical choral music. This study examined the relationship between twentieth-century musical silence and the expression of silence as the ineffable in Anglican choral music (referred to as English cathedral music or ECM) of the middle of the twentieth century.

  • Reflections on and Around Britten's War Requiem at Yale Mervyn
Reflections on and around Britten’s War Requiem at Yale Mervyn Cooke Adapted from the Tangeman Lecture delivered April 28, 2007 On 28 April 2007 a magnificent performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem was given in Woolsey Hall, New Haven, by the Philharmonia Orchestra of Yale under the conductor Shinik Hahm, with Sara Jakubiak, James Taylor, and Detlef Roth the soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, the Yale Schola Cantorum, Yale Camerata, Yale Glee Club, Trinity Church Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs, and Elm City Girls’ Choir; the performance had been given by the same forces at Boston’s Symphony Hall on the previous day. Before the Yale concert it was my privilege to offer some thoughts on Britten’s work in the shape of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music’s annual Tangeman Lecture. Our discussion focused not only on Britten’s economical and highly communicative musical idiom, but also on the various levels of irony presented by this multi-layered and thought-provoking score, which brings together – often in direct and disquieting collisions – vernacular settings of anti-war texts by the First World War poet Wilfred Owen (1893-1918), delivered in English by solo tenor and baritone voices with chamber-orchestral accompaniment, and the Latin Missa pro defunctis, declaimed by an operatic soprano soloist, large choir, and full orchestra; these together provide a more conventional backdrop sometimes reminiscent of the operatic style of Giuseppe Verdi. Britten’s work had been commissioned in the late 1950s to mark the consecration of the modern cathedral built at Coventry (in the British county of Warwickshire), the city’s old cathedral having been destroyed by German bombing in November 1940; his score was first performed in the new building, designed by the architect Basil Spence and poignantly erected alongside the ruins of the medieval building it replaced, on 30 May 1962.

  • Chilcott Phibbs Etc Prog 25.5.2013 AMC
Saturday 25 May 2013 Aldeburgh Music Club CHILCOTT PHIBBS KODALY Aldeburgh Music Club founded by Benjamin Britten in 1952 CELEBRATING THE BRITTEN CENTENARY www.aldeburghmusicclub.org.uk WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC A very warm welcome to tonight’s concert in the lovely setting of Orford Church. Our musical offering this evening is something rather special in that the three pieces we are performing were written in the 20th and 21st century. Bob Chilcott’s Requiem is dedicated to his niece, who died young whilst he was composing this piece and influenced its style and shape. Joseph Phibbs Choral Songs of Homage is an AMC commission to celebrate the Britten Centenary and tonight is its first performance. The Kodaly Missa Brevis, first performed during the siege of Budapest towards the end of the second world war, was written at a time of great uncertainty, danger and personal hardship. Three very different pieces each with its own message and very identifiable voice. I hope you enjoy the concert.
