Praised be Jesus Christ. Dear Saint Francis Family, I have been here almost three weeks and it has been such a pleasure and a wonderful experience to serve this faith community and I thank God for you! Catholic worship in our Parish, long characterized by its adherence to tradition, have been significantly al- tered by the pandemic. It has completely changed our lives. Let me bring to your kind attention that the his- tory of humanity is one of survival. Think of our forefathers who survived two world wars, the great depres- sion of 1930s, the Korean and Vietnam war, and many more challenges in their lives! Saint Paul reminds us that all things work together for good to those who love God (Romans 8, 28). Let us thank God for our faith, and please hold on to it. Fr. Joe and myself keep you in our prayers every day. We also have started our staff Rosary daily at the rectory entrance patio. What a beautiful thing, to begin our day with a prayer. Credit goes to our wonderful staff. Thanks to Msgr. Nathaniel, Fr. Joseph, Fr Anton, Deacon Francis and an amazing staff, here at Saint Francis. I cannot thank you enough for everything you do for the people of God. Our Parish is truly blessed with many deacons; Deacon Scotty Bourne, Deacon Hugo Navarrete, Deacon Joe Lubatti. Thank you for your ministry at Saint Francis. I look forward to meeting with our ministry leaders and their members. Fr Joseph has been appointed as the administrator at Our Lady of the Snow in Frazier Park. Congratulations! The viewing and funeral Mass for Msgr. Swett went very well. Since it was a private celebration, many of our parishioners could not attend but thanks to all those who prayed for him and those who did their final tribute to great shepherd. Deacon Francis and myself co-celebrated the funeral Mass. May his soul rest in peace. I have been visiting Saint Francis School and I look forward to serving our school community. Thanks to Mrs. Gruszka, Mrs. Schoorl, Mrs. Baker, all our teachers and staff for forming our future. I would request the parents and friends of Saint Francis School, please continue to support this abode of wisdom and knowledge. Take care of yourself, stay safe, stay healthy. Blessings, Fr. Theo St. Francis Parish & Ministry Announcements Father Theo Father Theophane N. Antony is a Discalced Carmelite priest who was born and raised in a Cath- olic family in Kerala, India. He joined the Carmelite Order at the age of 16 and became a mission- ary priest on January 2nd 1997. Having taught at the Carmelite minor seminary for two months, he set off to a mission station in Northern India where he served two years. In the following years, he went to Anna Malai University and obtained a master's degree in Applied Psychology. He served four years as a lecturer of psychology at the Carmelite Center of Theology and Spirituality in In- dia. In 2005 he went to Los Angeles, California, where he served as a hospital chaplain at Saint Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, for three years. He joined the Diocese of Fresno in 2008 and served as Parochial Vicar at Saint Helen’s Church in Fresno and later was assigned, Pastor at Saint Lucy’s Church in Fowler. Father Theo states, it has been truly a blessing to have the oppor- tunity to serve under three Bishops of our diocese; Bishop John Steinbock, Bishop Armando Ochoa and lately Bishop Joseph Brennen. Father Theo has done extensive research and studies in psychology in various universities including Cal State Los Angeles, California School of Professional Psychology (Alliant International University) Fresno Campus, and California Southern University. He has conducted several mental health workshops in the United States, India and Australia. His specialty is psycho-spiritual inter- ventions in treating anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. He is also a member of the American Psychological Association since 2008. In 2015 he obtained his doctorate in Clinical Psychology and the following year, he became an adjunct professor of psychology at Oakhurst Community College. For the past three years, he has been teaching Psychotherapy online at Fresno State University, now appointed Administrator Pro-Tem to our wonderful Parish Family!     Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

The sculptures represent figures and stories of popular saints taken from the history of art. They are made from cast representations of details taken from National Gallery paintings, which have been combined with assemblages of recycled machinery, broken children’s toys and other unwanted junk. In the foyer to the exhibition, a selection of related drawings and collages is displayed. The collages are made from fragments cut out from reproductions of paintings in the collection. THE ROOTSTEIN HOPKINS ASSOCIATE ARTIST SCHEME The National Gallery is a historical collection that ends with work by Cézanne and the Post-Impressionists. At the time of the Gallery’s foundation in 1824, one of the stated aims was that it should provide a resource from which contemporary artists could learn and gain inspiration. Taking its cue from this idea, the Associate Artist Scheme began in 1989 with the appointment of Paula Rego. The essential requirement for the Associate Artist is that he or she makes new work by engaging with, and responding to the collection or some aspect of the collection. The artist is given a studio in the Gallery for a period of around two years. Michael Landy is the ninth artist to be invited to undertake this project.

    RETABLE OF SAINT LUCY MASTER OF RIGLOS 15 MAIO – 08 SEPTEMBER 2019 IN THE BOOK Embaixadas de Portugal, pub- lished in 2006 (Lisbon: Polígono Editores), men- tion was made of the existence at the Portuguese Embassy in Spain (at the former palace of the Dukes of Hijar in Paseo de la Castellana, Madrid) of four fifteenth-century paintings described as being Catalan and attributed, in the book, to Luis Borrassá, the painter from Girona who had set- tled in Barcelona in around 1383, the city where he was to die in 1425. The paintings, depicting scenes from the life of St. Lucy, cannot, however, be attributed to that remarkable Catalan painter, as they date from a slightly later period (the mid- fifteenth century) and clearly belong instead to the Aragonese school. They were talked about, for the first time, in Volume VIII of the monumental A History of Spanish Painting by Chandler Rathfon Post, published in 1941 by Harvard University Press. Post describes two altarpieces that he had seen in Paris, in the collection of the famous antique dealers the Bacri brothers – one dedicated to Master of Riglos St. Blaise and the other to St. Lucy. The two altar- Aragon, middle of the 15th century pieces were similar in their structure: the main St. Lucy gives his goods to the poor c. 1450 figure of the saint was placed in a large central Tempera and gold on pine panel panel, with six narrative panels at the sides, a representation of Christ at the top, and a predella displaying five scenes from the Passion of Christ.

Feast of Saint Lucy Feast of Saint Lucy: December 13 Early in the morning on December 13th, especially in Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, it is common for the oldest daughter in the family to wear a white gown and red sash, with a wreath of candles on her head, and serve coffee and Lussekatter (saffron buns) to the household. It’s the Feast Day of Santa Lucia, or Saint Lucy! Saint Lucy lived in Syracuse on the island of Sicily, which is off the southern coast of Italy. Around the year 304, she was mar- tyred (put to death for witnessing to her faith) at a very young age during a time when the Emperor Diocletian was persecuting Chris- tians. Still today, we hear Saint Lucy’s name mentioned in Eucharistic Prayer I. But few details are known of her actual life. One legend says that during the persecution, Lucy’s eyes were plucked out. That is why you will sometimes see statues or holy cards with Saint Lucy holding out a platter with eyeballs on it! (See this depicted on the next page.) The Gospel for the Feast of Saint Lucy is Matthew 25:1-13 (The Parable of the Ten Virgins). In this parable, the five wise virgins went out to meet the Lord with their lamps lighted. Perhaps the five candles in the wreath on Lucy’s head, as she is de- picted on this page, represent those five faithful virgins! Saint Lucy is the Patron Saint of those who are blind or suffer from eye diseases, as well as the island of Sicily.
