Sunday School Leader's Guide CHAPTER 4: HOW GOD MEASURES GENEROSITY Sunday School Leader’s Guide Introduction It costs something to get the things that you really want. They were willing to sacrifice their own lives so that the Aucas could understand the love of God. While that is a radical example of making a sacrifice for something you love, it is also an accurate picture of how much God is willing to sacrifice in order to have intimacy with us. When God wanted to win your heart and secure intimacy with you for eternity, it cost Him His Son. pg 1 HOW GOD MEASURES GENEROSITY Today, the desire to follow Christ compels us – like the slain missionaries – to “take up [our] cross daily and follow [Christ].” In each case, there is a sacrifice involved. Question 1: What do you think…does God measure generosity by the size of the gift or by the size of the sacrifice? Are there any biblical stories that you can cite as examples? Question 2: What would “sacrificial” generosity look like for a middle-class American today? I will not take for the LORD what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.” He now knew that sacrifice was necessary for proper perspective and results. David learned his lesson. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown. 17 David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I am the one who has sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep.     History of Missions In Suriname, they say: “Learn from others and don’t make them learn from you.” They mean that we should study history to avoid the mistakes of the past. Some have said: Those who ignore history will repeat the mistakes of the past. We have a glorious history of God’s dealing with mankind. Let’s learn from it. I will mention that the first few pages outline briefly the missions emphasis of the Bible. This is covered in much more detail in the section on Theology of Missions. The reader who has already studied that section might want to just skim or even skip over the first few pages to the sections beginning with the church fathers. When we take a dispensational view of history, we can break the history in the Bible into seven segments. The first three are included in a time that God was dealing with all mankind. The first, of course, was the time of innocence, from the creation of Adam and Eve to their fall into sin. The second was the time of conscience, when man, now knowing good and evil, had a conscience to show him what he should do. But with a sin nature, man inevitably chose what was evil, and not good. Eventually God judged mankind, and only eight humans survived the flood. Third, we reach the time of human government, extending from the flood to the tower of Babel. Mankind refused to fill the earth, but rebelled to set up a human kingdom. God judged them and dispersed them by changing their languages.

Lydia (Janke ’48) Swan studied at Northwestern’s campus in downtown Minneapolis under the presidency of a young Billy Graham. She studied nursing at Swedish Hospital in order to become a Registered Nurse in 1952. She then married Allen Swan. In 1980–81, the Swans' youngest son, Phillip, attended Northwestern. Today Phillip serves as associate professor of music and co-director of Choral Studies at Lawrence University.     The Main Thing A Publication of MAIN STREET PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH May 2017 To Our Graduates: Be A Seeker Jesus’ well known words of wisdom from the Sermon on the Mount are very relevant for our graduating seniors. He told his disciples to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.” To seek after something requires concerted effort. It is an active and intentional pursuit, with a clear goal. I can think of no better time to remind you of these words than the transition from high school to college (or for some of you, college to the work world). Jesus wants you to prioritize seeking his kingdom above all other things. What does this look like in practice? I think it includes at least four things. • Seek a good church- Make a point to find and regularly attend a good church. The church is where the citizens of the Kingdom of God gather to hear about the King. It is the place where God promises to communicate his grace through gifted teachers, preachers, and leaders (Eph. 4:1-16). I am happy to help guide you to churches near your college. • Seek godly friends- Pray that God would lead you to develop friendships with fellow believers. You will need Christian companions to encourage you in the faith. You will need their example, their prayers, and their counsel. • Seek fellowship with God- Don’t neglect daily prayer. Jesus saved you so that you could be in fellowship with Him. Never forget that. Life will get busy, but don’t use that as an excuse for neglecting time with God.
