  • The-History-Of-The-Minster-School PDF File Download
The History of the Minster School I. Introduction The present Southwell Minster School came into being in September 1976 as an 11-18, co- educational comprehensive. One of its "ancestors" was a grammar school, established in the Middle Ages. No precise date can be given to the grammar school's foundation. It was always a small school - on a number of occasions in danger of ceasing to exist. It did not develop a reputation for producing pupils who became household names, nor did it set any trends in education. Yet, through descent from the Grammar School, the Minster School is part of a line of development which may go back further than that represented by any other English school now outside the private sector. And, precisely because the Grammar School, and the other ancestors of the modern comprehensive, were not too much out of the ordinary, their story is the more important. II. The Grammar School 1. The Origins of the Grammar School The earliest schools were linked to a monastery, cathedral or other large church, such as the Minster at Southwell. Such "grammar" schools were at first very small - made up of perhaps less than twenty boys. Pupils probably started to attend between the ages of nine and twelve. Southwell's grammar school may have been created at the same time as its Minster - to provide education for Minster choristers. The Minster is thought to have been founded soon after the Saxon King Edwy gave lands in Southwell to Oscetel, Archbishop of York, in a charter dating from between 955 and 959.

  • Volume 4: Spring Walks
1 Introduction Welcome to our fourth volume of ‘100 Walks from the Poppy and Pint’. This volume contains Spring Walks for you to enjoy now that the lockdown has eased. I hope that you find it useful. You will find 49 walks in this volume bringing the total number of walks in the series to 150! This volume is quite different to the other volumes. These walks have been specially selected from a wider radius of Lady Bay. This gives us more choice, more variety, and the chance to showcase different areas. Most of the walks start within 30 minutes’ drive from the Poppy and Pint and most are relatively short walks of around two to three hours. All have been chosen because they hold one or more points of interest. Moreover, the paths are quiet, they are varied, and all are on good, waymarked paths. This makes them ideal spring walks just after the lockdown. Being out on the trail in the open air anywhere lifts the spirits, is good for the soul, and gives our lives a different perspective. I think we always feel better when we come back from a walk! Do try it and see! This is the fourth volume of walks to complement Volumes One, Two and Three. Unfortunately, it is not possible to put these four volumes into one tome as the subsequent size of the file would be too big to e mail! When I set myself the challenge of researching and creating 100 local walks, I never actually thought it was possible.

The Plough The Parish and Community Magazine for Averham, Kelham and Staythorpe November 2019 WANT A FREE TREE? —APPLY BY 11 NOVEMBER 2019 As part of its Community Plan objective to protect and enhance the District’s natural environment Newark & Sherwood District Council is giving away TWO free trees to all residents of the District who apply for them by Monday 11th November. Full details of this scheme and the on-line application form can be found on the District Council’s website at https://www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/greener/freetrees/. Trees available this year are: Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) - the crab apple is a beautiful medium-sized deciduous tree that grows to a height of around 12m. It likes most moist but well drained soils, in full or partial sun. White flowers open in clusters during April and May, followed by small hard edible fruits during autumn. The apples are too sour to eat raw, but they can be made into jelly. It is a good tree for wildlife, as bees and other insects visit the flowers and birds and small Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) – the rowan is another attractive medium-sized deciduous tree that grows to a height of around 12m. It likes well drained loam or sandy soils, in full or partial sun. Creamy white flowers open in clusters in May and June, followed by red berries and attractive leaf colour in autumn. The berries can be used to make Rowan jelly and are a favourite food for birds. The sweet scented flowers are attractive to pollinating insects making the Rowan a great tree for wildlife.
