Abstract Overman (2009) has noted that there is no single representative experience of retirement in sport; however, it is clear that retirement from sport is challenging (Sparkes, 1998). Despite over sixty years of sports retirement research, problems continue to be reported amongst retiring athletes (Wylleman, Alfermann, & Lavallee, 2004) and specifically British footballers (Drawer & Fuller, 2002). Roderick (2006) suggested that knowledge of football retirement is limited. This study uses a post-structural understanding of power to discover how young men negotiate the challenges of enforced retirement. Data was gathered during in- depth interviews with 25 former players between the ages of 21-34.

  • My Autobiography
F SOLID GOLD MY AUTOBIOGRAPHY The Ultimate Rags to Riches Tale Forward by Robin Pilley David Gold, Chairman of Ann Summers, Gold Group International and West Ham United, is a man who has risen from humble and poverty stricken beginnings and achieved a status in life beyond what even he could have ever envisaged. Born an East End Jewish cockney lad, he was at the very bottom of life’s social strata. After a childhood characterised by war, poverty and disease he set out to change his life, and in the process he also changed the lives of everyone close to him. He understands and embraces the importance of change. He also changed the fortunes of his beloved football club, developed an iconic brand in Ann Summers and was influential in liberating the sexual behavior of the great British public. Now, Gold brings his unparalleled ability for change to his inspirational autobiography. This completely reworked edition, ‘The Ultimate Rags to Riches Tale’, focuses more on his personality, his remarkable business achievements, his life- affirming story and his reflections and recollections on a world that changed beyond recognition within his own lifetime. And most importantly, he speaks candidly about how he softened the British stiff upper lip and almost single-handedly brought sex onto the UK’s high streets and changed our sex lives for the better. No one has done more to prove that dreams can come true and now you can read his exceptional autobiography exclusively written to show just 2 what one man can achieve from the most humble beginnings.

Voters making selections in their own branch categories list only film titles on their ballots, not the individuals responsible for the various achievements. For that reason, as well as for reasons of printing time and convenience of using this pamphlet, full credit rosters are not provided for the listed films. An exception to the above exists in the four Acting categories, where simply listing titles would not provide enough voting information. Actors Branch members filling out their Nominations ballots must indicate both titles and the particular performers they are voting for. For that reason, the Reminder List provides a listing of up to fifty cast members for each film. Pictures eligible in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and Foreign Language Film categories are also eligible in the Best Picture category, provided they meet the qualifications for the category. The whole issue was sensationalized in the newspapers as part of a circulation war. On 14 November one page of the New York Journal and Advertiser gave graphic details, including illustrations of the injuries – a broken backbone; concussion to the brain; and a fractured skull – sustained during games by three players who had died. 1 Over one hundred years later, following a game in 2002, Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United, announced that David Beckham, then the world’s most famous player, had broken a ‘metatarsal’ bone in his foot. His place in that year’s World Cup was immediately put into doubt. The word ‘metatarsal’ was at fi rst met with bemusement by the television broadcaster. However, the word soon entered everyday language as the media hungrily dissected the injury, its anatomical location and its consequences for the player; ‘doing a metatarsal’ quickly became part of the sporting lexicon.

1 16 February 1938 Jack Balmer scores Liverpool’s fastest league goal as the Reds get the perfect start in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. Though reports vary, the officially recorded time is just ten seconds, as T.G. Jones’s poor clearance falls to Balmer, who makes no mistake to put Liverpool 1-0 up. Though the Toffees level just seven minutes later, two late John Shafto goals complete a much-needed 3-1 win for the Reds. 27 August 1984 Paul Walsh makes an incredible start to life as a Liverpool player by scoring after just 14 seconds of his home debut against West Ham United. The diminutive striker, signed for £700,000 from Luton Town, will score 37 goals in 112 games for the Reds, though injuries affect his time at Anfield. The Reds go on to win the game against the Hammers 3-0. 8 May 1979 Liverpool make a dream start against Aston Villa as Bob Paisley’s side look for the win that will clinch an 11th top-flight title. With only 47 seconds on the clock, Terry McDermott crosses in to find full-back Alan Kennedy, who makes no mistake from close range. The Reds go on to win 3-0 and the victory ensures second-placed West Brom can’t catch Bob Paisley’s side, who also post a 17 LIVERPOOL: MINUTE BY MINUTE record number of points – 68 – during the two-points- for-a-win era. 14 December 1996 Robbie Fowler moves on to 99 goals for Liverpool as he puts the Reds ahead against Middlesbrough after just 29 seconds at Anfield.

The Five Most Disappointing English Exports by Stuart Fuller With the news that perennial bad boy Ravel Morrison has joined Lazio, we look back on those Englishmen who set foot on foreign soil as pioneers with the nation’s hopes on their shoulders, only to return with nothing more than a sombrero, some cheap tequila and a strange rash. No.5 – Anton Ferdinand Some transfers will always end in tears. You don’t need to be a footballing expert to see that. Take the case of young Anton joining Turkish club Antalyaspor. Ferdinand comes from a close-knit South London family. He came through the West Ham youth system and played over 130 games for the Hammers before he headed north to Sunderland. A couple of seasons at QPR where he became embroiled in the John Terry racially-aggravated public order trial before being released in the summer of 2013. After a brief loan period with Bursaspor in the Turkish Super League he joined rivals Antalyaspor. Thousands of miles from home with no knowledge of the language, what could go wrong? The Turks tore up his contract after just 3 games and 2 years left on it. He then headed to Thailand where he was unveiled as a new signing for Police United. He never played for the club, returning to England to play for Reading (twice) last season. No.4 – Stan Collymore Few people these will realise that Collymore actually played the game. That is unless you listen to his post-match rants on the radio where anyone who dares to have a different opinion will be challenged has not knowing what they are talking about as they have never played the game.
