GARCIA 115 Oak Crest Dr., Lafayette, LA 70503. E-mail: [email protected] In a recent paper Terryn (2011) synonymized Terebra limatula Dall, 1889 and T. l. var. acrior Dall, 1889. This paper proposes that the two taxa are separate species; and that Terryn’s determination that Terebra crassireticula Simone, 1999 is a junior synonym of T. limatula may also be in error. When Dall first described Terebra limatula, he had with him specimens from a number of localities that ranged from Barbados to the Gulf of Mexico to North Carolina. He advised the reader that there seemed to be two different types of sculpture: “The sculpture of the Antillean specimens tend to be stronger, the alveoli between the ridges deeper, and the spirals fewer than in the northern specimens. The latter usually have three or four above the suture, the Antillean two or three. If these differences are worth naming, the variety may be called T. limatula var. acrior” ( Dall,1889: 66). Unfortunately, Dall did not choose a holotype or a type locality for either taxon, and, to complicate matters, the form from Puerto Rico shown by him and Simpson (Dall & Simpson, 1901; pl. 57, fig. 6) is not the “Antillean” form T. limatula var. acrior, as stated in that work, but the “northern” form with more numerous spirals and weaker ornamentation (Fig. -

MILLER2 ABSTRACT: Although gastropods of the family Terebridae are common in sub tidal sand communities throughout the tropics, Terebra gouldi, a species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, is the first terebrid for which a complete life history is known. Unlike most toxoglossan gastropods, which immobilize their prey through invenomation, T. gouldi possesses no poison apparatus and captures its prey with a long muscular proboscis. It is a primary carnivore, preying exclusively on the enteropneust Ptychodera flava, a nonselective deposit feeder. The snail lies com pletely buried in the sand during the day, but emerges to search for prey after dark. Prey are initially detected by distance chemoreception, but contact of the anterior foot with the prey is necessary for proboscis eversion and feeding. The sexes in T. gouldi are separate, and copulation takes place under the sand. Six to eight spherical eggs are deposited in a stalked capsule, and large numbers of capsules are attached in a cluster to coral or pebbles. There is no planktonic larval stage. Juveniles hatch through a perforation in the capsule from 30-40 days after development begins and immediately burrow into the sand. Growth is relatively slow. Young individuals may grow more than 1 cm per year, but growth rates slow considerably with age. Adults grow to a maximum size of 8 cm and appear to live 7-10 years. -

NMFS proposes to implement the specifications for fishing year 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 separately prior to each fishing year. The specifications pertain to ACLs for coral reef ecosystem fisheries in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ or federal waters; generally 3-200 nautical miles or nm) around American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Guam, and Hawaii, and a post-season AM to correct the overage of an ACL if it occurs. Because of the large number of individual coral reef ecosystem management unit species (CREMUS) in each island area, individual species were aggregated into higher taxonomic groups, generally at the family level. -

The stem group from which the Latrogastropoda originated lived during or shortly before Aptian/Albian time (100–125 Ma). Several groups of Latrogastropoda that lived at the time of deposition of the Campanian to Maastrichtian (65–83 Ma) Ripley Formation have no recognized living counterparts. These Late Cretaceous species include the Sarganoidea, with the families Sarganidae, Weeksiidae and Moreidae, which have a rounded and low protoconch with a large embryonic whorl. -

Zoologie Bochum, West-Germany With one text-figure and one table ABSTRACT This study summarizes field observations and collections of the molluscan fauna of the coastal and offshore reefs in the area of Port Sudan, Central Red Sea. In spite of the fact that some families of this group were described from several areas of the Red Sea, there exists only little information on the entire faunal composition of this region. 282 species of Amphineura, Gastropoda, and Bivalvia, collected and studied in nine localities are listed according to their habitats. Moreover, descriptions of the prominent members of typical molluscan assemblages are given for 13 habitats and microhabitats which differ in their morphological structures and in their hydrographic and physiographic conditions. Emphasis is placed on further studies on the trophic interactions within certain habitats. INTRODUCTION Although there is a considerable number of taxonomie literature on some molluscan families in the Indo-West-Padfic (Abbott, i960; Burgess, 1970; Cernohorsky, 1967; Habe, 1964; Kira, 1962; Powell, 1964; Rosewater, 1965), there is comparatively scarce information for the Red Sea. After the exten• sive surveys and descriptions of Issel, 1869, Hall & Standen, 1907, Jickeli, 1874, Shopland, 1902, and Sturany, 1901, 1903, in more recent times only a few studies were published on the entire faunal composition of molluscs in this region. Most of these publications deal with certain families, sometimes they also give information about their zoogeographical distribution in the Red Sea: Thus the cypraeids seem to yield the best information on their occurrence throughout the region (Foin, 1972; Mienis, 1971b; O'Malley, 1971; Schilder, 1965).
