of the gospel visited hawaii returned briefly to salt lake city for the funeral of president anthon H lund and then continued through the south pacific australia new zealand india and europe he was accompanied on this arduous yearlongyear long tour by hugh J cannon president of liberty stake in salt lake city and a member of the deseret union sunday school general board of which president mckay was general superintendent among the many spiritual manifestations that occurred during this world tour came a remarkable event during the thirty six hours they spent on maui president mckay and brother cannon docked atatmauimauimaul at 430 AM february 9 19219211 held a meeting at mission headquarters in the morning and held another for members in the evening during the afternoon they visited the sites where hugh J cannons father george Q cannon had met Jonjonatanaatana H napela resulting in the first baptism in maui and the organization of the first branch of the church in hawaii and where george Q cannon had also received intense spiritual manifestations accompanying the party were E wesley smith hawaiian mission president and a son ofjoseph F smith who had also served as a in which the party traveled hughhughjhughaJ cannon was greatly touched by visiting the sites asso- ciated with his father and on the grounds of the little chapel at pulehupulphu president mckay felt inspired to offer a prayer of thanks- giving during that prayer all five menwere deeply stirred spiritually and brother kailimai speaking in hawaiian to president smith said he had seen a vision president mckay after president smith trans- lated brother kailimaisKailimais words did not interpret the vision but confirmed its divine origins by affirming that the veil was very thin hughjhugha cannon who had been most profoundly affected during the experience testified that at least for him there had been no veil what was the manifestation called forth by the combination of faith and filial love of these five church leaders how did the five experience it and how did they describe it both then and later what message does it have about the nature of spiritual experience for readers who leamlearn of it through the more distant witness of the written record thanks largely to the kindness ofmany members ofthe families involved I1 have found sixteen separate accounts ofthis event all but four ofthem unpublished this essay examines these accounts in chron- ological order and in the context of the participants lives as an exploration of the dynamics of memory faith love and spirituality samuel harris hurstsburstsaccount of the five participants only david kailimai the man who saw the vision left no personal account either at the time or later abigail kahanu kailimai kailimai who is both davids niece and his daughter in law does not recall an earlier oral version or in fact ever hearing this experience from elder kailimai however samuel harris hurst jr kept a daily diary and recorded the event within hours of its occurrence elder hurst was then thirty six a native of cache valley and a widower his wife had died a fingeringlingeringdeath from heart disease shortly before leaving him with a ten year old daughter inez he had had grave doubts about serving a mission under such circumstances but had accepted the calling at least partly because of his childs under a pepper tree 57 his diary and his autobiography written in 1958 breathe a solid simple faithfulness that is very moving he confesses that being called to hawaii was quite a test to my faith his patriarchal blessing had told him he would go to the land of my forefathers which did not seem to be possible he thought he would be too old to learn hawaiian fluently and adds with humility I1I had desires to be a good speaker and I1 could not see any development for me if simple natives were to be my audience he wrestled with his doubts about whether his call had been inspired all the way to hawaii butwhenhesawbut when he saw wesley smith the mission president waiting for him on the dock he recognized him as the man with whom he had labored as a missionary in a dream seen two years earlier this dream had occurred a year before smith had been called as mission president with this recorded elder hurst I1I knew that some power other than that of man was having something to do with it elder hurst also knew that he would be assigned to some island other than oahubahu before president smith made the assignments 1 elder hurstsbursts diary for february 8 1921 records the prayer under the pepper tree in simple prose but eloquent detail elder mckay pres smith and cannon elder keola and myself drove out to pulehupulphu where pres geo Q cannon had his wonderful experience in the conversion of so many of the natives and the first to join the church As we sat in the little ford in front of the meeting house there pres smith related to us the story ofhow pres cannon in 1850 or 51 had delivered his wonderful discourse in a little church which then stood on the ground we were then on at this meeting he appeared to be standing in the air with a hallow of light around his head at the same time all but three of the over hundred persons there present were transtransfiguredfigured before him bro hughjhugha cannon being a son of pres cannon was very deeply effected sic more so than any one I1 have ever saw before we then alighted from the car and walked around the grounds at the rear of the old church on the grounds now in the shade of an old tree elder mckay said brethren I1 feel impressed that we should render our thanks to the lord for the labors of this great man and his laborercolaborerco pres joseph PF smith whose sons are repre- sented here today at this we bowed in humble reverence in prayer to god and then I1 listened to one of the grandest prayers it has ever been my privilege to listen to at its close elder keola testifiedtest i flednned he saw a hand and arm extended to me in an attitude of shaking hands in speaking of this later bro mckay said bro keola I1 do not know the significance of the hand you saw but I1 know this that the veil be- tween us apostle cast a penetrating look at him for he as well as we seemed to be in doubt as to whether bro cannon had beheld a vision or not but no more was said at that time in closing his remarks in a general meeting held at wailuku tonight elder mckay made mention of this again and with tears in the eyes of both men he turned to bro cannon and stapingshaping sic on the shoulder said my brother you have been closer to your father today than you have ever been before 2 because elder hurst spoke hawaiian he probably heard elder kailimaisKailimais testimony to president smith as it was uttered neither here on the very day that the event occurred nor later did elder hurst speculate on the possible meaning of this experience he simply recorded elder kailimaisKailimais words president mckays response and the powerful emotional and physical effect the manifestation had on brother cannon along with brother cannons testimony of the temporary parting of the veil that separated him from his deceased father two of elder hurstsbursts daughters confirm that he did not in- terpret the story in telling

Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history.

    Carol Wilkinson: Baptismal Site in Chatburn, England 83 Mormon Baptismal Site in Chatburn, England Carol Wilkinson The location of a baptismal site in the village of Chatburn, England, used by Mormon missionaries in the 1830s and 1840s has been identified. This village, along with the neighboring community of Downham, was the location of a large number of Mormon conversions when the message of the restored gospel was first preached to the inhabitants during this time period. The first Mormon missionaries to England arrived in Liverpool in July 1837. These seven men (Heber C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, Willard Richards, Joseph Fielding, Isaac Russell, John Goodson, and John Snyder), quickly moved to Preston where they were successful in receiving converts and orga- nized a branch of the Church in that city. After organizing the Preston Branch they decided to separate and carry their message to other parts of the surround- ing country. Heber C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, and Joseph Fielding stayed in the Preston area and continued to proselytize and organize branches. Kimball and Fielding also began to venture into the upper reaches of the river Ribble Val- ley, teaching in Walkerford and Ribchester, where they experienced further success and organized additional branches of the Church.1 Further upstream from these villages lay the small communities of Chat- burn and Downham, just south of the river Ribble and north of towering Pen- dle Hill. Some of the most spiritual experiences of the missionary effort in the upper Ribble Valley occurred in these two villages. What a privilege it is to have membership in such a divine institution!” From the Life of Joseph Fielding Smith Joseph Fielding Smith’s service as President of the Church, from January 23, 1970, to July 2, 1972, was the culmination of a lifetime of dedication in the Lord’s kingdom. He joked that his first Church assignment came when he was a baby. When he was nine months old, he and his father, President Joseph F. Smith, accompanied Pres- ident Brigham Young to St. George, Utah, to attend the dedication of the St. George Temple.1 As a young man, Joseph Fielding Smith served a full-time mis- sion and was later called to be president in a priesthood quorum and a member of the general board of the Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association (the forerunner to today’s Young Men organization). He also worked as a clerk in the Church Historian’s office, and he quietly helped his father as an unofficial secretary when his father was President of the Church. Through these ser- vice opportunities, Joseph Fielding Smith came to appreciate the Church’s inspired organization and its role in leading individuals and families to eternal life. Joseph Fielding Smith was ordained an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ on April 7, 1910. He served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles for almost 60 years, including almost 20 years as President of that Quorum.

Eyes are drawn across the brook-carved val- ley toward the Holy Mount where the temple stood in antiquity. Reflecting upon sacred events that unfolded in the Holy City is the natural result of standing on the Mount of Olives, particularly certain events in the life of Jesus and the ministries of Melchizedek, Abraham, Isaac, Isaiah, Lehi, Jeremiah, Peter, and Paul. And as a result of Orson Hyde’s ascent up the Mount to dedicate Palestine, Latter-day Saints include him in this select group.

Faulring: Jackson County Marriages by LDS Elders 197 Early Marriages Performed by the Latter-day Saint Elders in Jackson County, Missouri, 1832-1834 Compiled and Edited with an Introduction by Scott H. Faulring During the two and a half years (1831-1833) the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lived in Jackson County, Missouri, they struggled to establish a Zion community. In July 1831, the Saints were commanded by revelation to gather to Jackson County because the Lord had declared that this area was “the land of promise” and designat- ed it as “the place for the city of Zion” (D&C 57:2). During this period, the Mormon settlers had problems with their immediate Missourian neighbors. Much of the friction resulted from their religious, social, cultural and eco- nomic differences. The Latter-day Saint immigrants were predominantly from the northeastern United States while the “old settlers” had moved to Missouri from the southern states and were slave holders. Because of the Missouri Compromise of 1820, Missouri was a slave state. Eventually, by mid-July 1833, a militant group of Jackson County Missourians became intolerant of the Mormons and began the process of forcefully expelling them from the county.1 And yet in spite of these mounting hostilities, a little-known aspect of the Latter-day Saints’ stay in Jackson County is that during this time, the Mormon elders were allowed to perform civil marriages. In contrast to the legal difficulties some of the elders faced in Ohio, the Latter-day Saint priest- hood holders were recognized by the civil authorities as “preachers of the gospel.”2 Years earlier, on 4 July 1825, Missouri enacted a statute entitled, “Marriages.

    The World of Joseph Fielding: Chapter 34 Help Arrives from the Salt Lake Valley Sporadic help arrived on the plains from the Great Basin that summer, with families and Church leaders sending what aid they could in the form of drivers, teams and wagons. Thomas Bullock recorded that on two different days in July, they received news from the Valley, including Porter Rockwell and Joseph W. Young, who presumably also brought aid in the form of teamsters, oxen and supplies.1 This aid was life-saving. Interestingly, the saints in the valley were unable to offer this same assistance to the pioneers crossing the plains the following year due to the difficult work of preparing the land, felling trees and other hard labor required in the settlement. President Young informed the Winter Quarters pioneers in advance of their 1849 trek that they would need to be strong enough to cross on their own from Winter Quarters to Salt Lake City.2 At Fort Laramie, on the 21st of July, 1848, Thomas Bullock sent a letter to Willard Richards and Amasa Lyman, who were about one month behind him on the plains: We continued our journey until yesterday when we met Orrin P. Rockwell and Quinson Scovil from the Valley with a letter from the council by which we learn that the crickets have done considerable damage to the crops; the frost has also killed many of the vines, beans, etc., but what is spared, is in two words first rate. They expect. and the Lord continues to bless them, to reap about 8,000 bushels of wheat.

I begin by examining the origins of the US Mormon Mission to Britain and a social historical study of the Staffordshire religious and industrial landscape. In order to recover the hidden voices of Staffordshire Mormon converts, I have constructed a unique Staffordshire Mormon Database for the purposes of this thesis containing over 1,900 records. This is drawn upon throughout, providing the primary quantitative evidence for this fascinating yet neglected new religious movement. From the data I explore the demographic composition of Staffordshire Mormonism using a more precise definition of class than has been the case previously, whilst also considering gender and

KIMBALL AND ORSON HYDE’S 1837 VISION OF THE INFERNAL WORLD R Christopher James Blythe I consider it a great privilege to offer this essay in honor of Richard Cowan. While I have not been blessed to be his student or his colleague, I have been benefited and influenced by his work. His volume The Church in the Twentieth Century remains an important reminder to so many of us who focus in the nineteenth century that Church history has so much left to be explored. Brother Cowan has demonstrated the compatibility of faithful scholarship and academic rigor in a manner that is truly commendable. he 1837 mission to Great Britain was a milestone in Church history. It was the first mission outside of North America, and its eventual fruits swelled the ranks of the Saints in Nauvoo. TThere was little training or experience among the seven missionaries. Four of them had only recently found the gospel through the preach- ing of Parley P. Pratt in upper Canada. These converts were eager to accompany Heber C. Kimball (who had been called to preside over the mission), Orson Hyde, and Willard Richards on their journey. Kimball and Hyde were both ordained to the apostleship in 1835. As we think about this mission and the later coming of the major- ity of the Apostles in 1840, we are right to remember the miracu- lous conversion of many Latter-day Saints, the shaping of young men 176 P An Eye of Faith who would become great leaders in this dispensation, but also the real adversity faced by this first set of missionaries.
