2021 Southland Academy Summer Camp Opportunities

Wrestling Raiders Director: Coach Smith Rising: 1st-6th graders Date: May 24, 25, 26 Time: 10:00-11:30 Location: Gym Campers should wear appropriate clothing. Students will learn the fundamentals, proper technique, and effective strategies of . They will learn wrestling moves from all three starting positions and most importantly, how to wrestle safely. Campers are encouraged to give maximum effort when wrestling and will be instructed how to wrestle the Southland way.

Raider Director: Coach Foster Rising 1st-6th graders Date: May 24, 25, 26 Time: 1:00-2:30 Location: Gym Raider Basketball camp is a fun yet focused time for basketball for girls and boys interested in improving their game. Campers will learn to improve ball handling, passing and catching skills as well as shooting fundamentals.

Raider Dance Camp Director: Heather Grinolds Rising: K5, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th Date: May 24, 25, 26, 27 Time: 9:00-12:00 Location: Lower School Building, Academic Center Campers, get ready to learn a choreographed dance as well have opportunities to create a dance each morning. Wear t-shirts, comfy shoes with socks, and have your hair pulled back off of your neck and face. Campers will have fun performing on Friday for their parents and peers. (The number of guests will be in accordance with COVID modifications.) Campers should bring water bottles and a light snacks for each day.

Fine Arts Camp Director: Heather Grinolds Rising: K5, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th Date: May 24, 25, 26, 27 Time: 1:00-3:00 Location: Melvin T. Kinslow Gymnasium Come enjoy a camp full of drama and music. Campers will work through the week to prepare for a small production which they will perform for parents on the last day of camp. (The number of guests will be in adherence to COVID modifications. Each camper should wear tennis shoes and bring a water bottle and light snack. 2

A Night at the Academy Directors: Laura Rooks and Stacey Whittle Rising: 3rd graders Date: May 25 Time: 6:00 pm to 8:30 am Locations: Lower School Building Campers will spend the night with Mrs. Rooks and Ms. Whittle at the school! They will play games, have a project, and have lots of fun! Each camper should bring a sleeping bag and toothbrush. Best of all, NO PARENTS ALLOWED!

Raider and Director: Coach Brady Rising: 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th Date: June 1, 2, 3 Time: 9:00-10:30 Location: Raider Baseball and Softball Complex The goal of the Raider baseball and softball programs is to provide personalized instruction as well as motivate each player to improve his/her skills and knowledge of the game. The camp targets the skills of: hitting, fielding, throwing, base running, bunting, position play, and game strategy. Campers will interact and will be assisted by current varsity players. Campers should bring a water bottle. Backyard Botanists Director: Leigh Ann Saye Rising: K5, 1st, 2nd Date: June 2, 3, 4 Time: 9:00-11:30 Location: Mrs. Saye’s classroom and the playground Campers will love science in the garden activities. We will explore nature, plants, bugs, and birds. Campers will read books, play in the dirt, plant a miniature garden, and create art projects together. Each camper should bring a water bottle.

Read, Write, Draw Director: Angie Jones Rising: 1st Date: June 1, 2, 3 Time: 9:00-11:30 Location: Lower School Library (Media Center) Each day the campers will listen as Mrs. Jones reads a popular choice book which can be logged into their summer reading journals. After the story, students will participate in a discussion followed by an art and STEM activity. Campers should bring a beach towel. They may also bring one of their favorite books. Please make director aware of any allergies as a light snack will be provided.

Time Began in a Garden Director: Angie Trollinger Rising: K5, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th Date: June 7, 8, 9, 10 Time: 1:00-3:00 Location: Middle School Building - Art Room, #307 Campers will create a Fairy Garden, wind chime, sun catchers, clay impressions and bubble wands. There will also be lots of nature activities outside. 3

Enchanted Creatures Director: Rena Clayton Rising: K3, K4, K5, and 1st Date: June 8, 9, 10 Time: 9:30-12:00 Location: “Miss” Rena’s Room in K3/K4 building Come discover the world’s most unusual creatures that seem magical but are in fact real at the Enchanting Creatures Summer Camp! Learn fascinating facts about each creature and the characteristics that make each special-such as the jewel like colors of Fairy Wren bird or the iridescent wings of the Blue Morpho butterfly. Enjoy three exciting days of cool facts, crafts, directed drawings and FUN! Campers should wear sneakers (no sandals or flip flops).

Tea Party for Two Director: Laura Rooks Rising: 1st, 2nd, 3rd Date: June 10 Time: 9:30-12:00 Location: Mrs. Rooks’ room in the Lower School Building Join Mrs. Rooks for a tea party fit for a queen. Campers will play games, create art, and share story time. Tea and snack time is a must, so come dressed in your “best” in case you meet the Queen!!

Who Dun it? Director: Jason Warnock Rising: 3rd, 4th, 5th Date: June 22-24 Time: 9:00-11:00 Location: High School Building, Room # 210 and Computer Lab Campers will use simple forensics to solve a case. Can you figure out a suspect’s height based on his shoe size? Can you find and analyze fingerprints? Come join me and let’s find out “Who Dun it?”

Speech and Language Camp Director: Kristen Gordon Rising: K4, K5, 1st Date: June 21, 22, 23, 24 Time: 9:00-10:30 Location: Lower School Speech Room Any campers who are already in a speech therapy class are welcome. Likewise, students who may have difficulty with certain sounds, stuttering, or language are welcome to join. Campers will practice sounds, learn intervention strategies and interact with one another through games, arts and crafts, and music. Please make the director aware of allergies as light snack and candy will be provided.

Jurassic Art Director: Casey Trollinger Rising: K3, K4, K5 Date: June 23, 24, 25 Time: 9:00-11:30 Location: Campers meet in the Lower School Academic Center on the first day. Otherwise, campers will be outside as much as possible or in the art room. Who knew dinosaurs could be so much fun! Campers will be engaged in the dinosaur world as they make mini terrariums. Also, campers will build and paint a very friendly dinosaur. Campers should wear old clothes so there will be no worries of paint spills and bring a water bottle and light snack.

Music and Murals Director: Leigh Ann Saye Rising: K5, 1st, 2nd Date: June 28, 29, 30 Time: 9:00-11:30 Location: Mrs. Saye’s classroom and the playground Campers will explore rhythm, rhyme, and music, the science of sound. Campers will investigate musical instruments while having fun painting and playing and moving to the music. The only supplies each camper should bring are water a bottle and a big shirt for a painting smock.

Drumming! Director: Randy Saye Rising: 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th Date: June 28, 29, 30 Time: 9:00-11:00 Location: Lower School Music Room From hand drums to the drum set to sticks and buckets, campers will explore rhythm and percussion with Mr. Saye, who has been drumming for over 30 years. All skill levels are welcome. Join Mr. Saye and have some fun beating on stuff!!

Raider Art Camp Director: Madison Chandler Rising: K5, 1st, 2nd Date: July 7, 8, 9 Time: 9:00-11:00 Location: Lower School Art Room Campers will design their own marbled paper art portfolio. Each camper will use his/her art papers to create a unique final piece of art. Campers should wear old clothes that can get dirty, and bring an apron if you have one.

Raider Art Camp Director: Madison Chandler Rising: 3rd, 4th, 5th Date: July 7, 8, 9 Time: 1:00-3:30 Location: Lower School Art Room Campers will discover endless possibilities of ways to use marble paper. Campers will design their own marbled paper portfolio and design art journals so they can sketch all summer long! Campers should wear old clothes that can get dirty, and bring an apron if you have one. 5

Code Dance Party Director: Angie Jones Rising: 2nd graders Date: July 12, 13, 14 Time: 9:00-11:30 Location: Lower School Computer Lab Campers, come to the computer lab to create your own dance party with CODE! Get a jumpstart on what you will be learning in your second grade class. Please notify director of allergies as a light snack will be provided.

Builders Base Camp Director: Leigh Ann Saye Rising: K5, 1st, 2nd Date: July 12, 13, 14 Time: 9:00-11:30 Location: Mrs. Saye’s Classroom and playground Campers will use many different building materials to build ramps, towers, and bridges. Also, campers will have lots of fun working together on STEAM challenges. Each camper should bring a water bottle.

Christmas in July Director: Laura Rooks Rising: 1st, 2nd, 3rd Date: July 19, 20, 21 Time: 9:00-11:30 Locations: Lower School, Mrs. Rooks’ Room, #104 The July weather may not feel like Christmas, but after this camp you will be singing, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!” Campers will have fun building gingerbread houses, making Christmas ornaments, decorating Christmas cookies, and reading Christmas stories. HOHOHO, campers will love participating in Christmas science experiments.

Code Dance Party Director: Angie Jones Rising: 4th graders Date: July 26, 27, 28 Time: 9:00-11:30 Location: Lower School Computer Lab Campers: Come to the computer lab to create your own dance party with CODE! Please notify director of allergies as a light snack will be provided. 6

The Woodworking Shop Director: Randy Saye Rising: 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th Date: July 12, 13, 14 Time: 10:00-12:00 Location: Meet in the Lower School Academic Center on the first day. Campers will complete several woodworking projects during the week—start to finish! Campers will learn basic woodworking skills and how to use hand tools. Spend some time in the woodworking shop and you will be amazed at what you can do.

Raider Football Director: Coach Murray and the Raider Football staff and varsity players Rising: 2nd-6th graders Date: July 28-29 Time: 8:30-11:00 Location: MTK Gym on the first day Students may wear tennis shoes or cleats (if available). Shorts are fine and pads are not necessary. The young Raiders will work hard and learn some basic football fundamentals of catching, throwing, and playing the game of football.
