  • Minnesota's Mineral Resources
CHAPTER • 9 Minnesota's Mineral Resources IN MINNESOTA the production of iron ore is far more valuable economically than the total of all other mineral products, but im portant industries are based on Minnesota's other geological forma tions as well. Architectural, monumental, and structural stone are produced from granite, limestone, dolomite, and other Minnesota rocks. Gravel and sand are excavated and processed, and clay is used for many ceramic products. :Manganese in important amounts occurs in the iron ores of the Cuyuna district. Finally, although they are often not thought of as mineral products, two of our most im portant mineral resources are water and soil. The iron ores and mining operations of the Mesabi, Vermilion, and Cuyuna iron-bearing districts and of the southeastern lYlinnesota counties will be discussed in detail in later chapters, but a few sta tistics on Minnesota's iron ore industry may remind us how impor tant this geological heritage is. The following is an estimate of Min nesota's iron ore reserves, made on lYlay 1, 1961: Gross Tons Mesabi Range 500,799,179 Vermilion Range 9,755,974 Cuyuna Range 36,530,000 Fillmore County 'il,860,337 Total iron ore 549,945,490 172 MI NESOTA'S MINERAL RESOURCES The total production of iron ore in Minne ota to January 1, 1962, was 2,529,737,553 tons. Total taxes paid on iron ore to January 1, 1961 , were approximately $1,257,448,400, a very important source of funds for the state government. Slightly over 60 per cent of the total iron ore produced in the United States has come from l\1inne- ota.

  • Where EXACTLY Can You Find a Moose in Cook County? by Tom Spence, Local Photographer
Where EXACTLY Can You Find a Moose in Cook County? By Tom Spence, Local Photographer The most frequently asked question I get as a photographer is: “Where do you find the moose?” I’m pretty guarded about where I find moose in Cook County. It’s not that I don’t want you to find a moose – I do! I just don’t believe it is good for the moose to announce their exact location. The moose are already in trouble in Minnesota. The population has been in decline since the mid to late 2000s. In 2006, there was an estimated 8,840 moose counted during the winter count. In 2018, there were only 3000. Parasites like winter ticks and brainworm are two factors in the decline of the moose population. Researchers have also seen a lot of wolf-killed moose, though many of those likely had underlying health issues which weakened them and made them an easier target. Researchers say the decline has plateaued, but only time will tell if these magnificent mammals will survive in the woods of Minnesota. Since news of their decline, I’ve tried to photograph moose every chance I get. Over the years, I’ve had countless sightings. Some last only seconds, but sometimes I am fortunate to watch the moose for as long as two hours before they move on. So, where exactly do I see moose in Cook County? The Bay in Tofte – yes, Bluefin Bay! The Highest Moose in Cook County: Eagle Mountain, Minnesota’s highest point Moose Birth Island – BWCA Fore!! Or one at least at Superior National Golf Course On the County Line – near Caribou River City Moose in Grand Marais Tofte Town Park – just last Spring Winter Moose? Yep – Bull Moose in Superior National Forest last February EDITOR’S NOTE: Read the full blog to learn details of each sighting and see amazing moose images at thomasjspenceimages.com, click on Oct.

  • ATHLETE GUIDE Lutsen99er.Com
ATHLETE GUIDE Lutsen99er.com Welcome Racers, On behalf of this great community of Lutsen, our Lutsen 99er volunteers, local fire and search and rescue department, Lutsen Mountains, our, Cook County Events and Visitors Bureau and Life Time Fitness, the Healthy Way of Life Company, I am honored to provide you with a very warm and gracious welcome. Nearly 125 years ago and after exploring the shoreline of Lake Superior while fishing from a boat, CCA Nelson is forced to find shelter during inclement weather in a small bay at the mouth of a north shore river. It was there he discovers the virgin wilderness beauty of the area he named Lutsen and quickly files a homestead claim for $14. Shortly thereafter, CAA and his wife begin a lifetime of providing hospitality and sharing of this great land with visitors now extending through four generations of the Nelson family. The Lutsen 99er, 39er, 19er and kid races start and finish are all staged here at Lutsen Mountains. The ski area was a dream of George Nelson, Jr, grandson of CAA, since his army training days in Colorado with the famed 10th Mountain Ski troops. After returning from the Northern Italy Theater shortly after World War II, George completes his dream and opens Lutsen Mountains in 1948. Today, your race course will cross over the Poplar River several times, the very river where CAA found refuge, combined with crisscrossing the ski slopes at Lutsen Mountains, the slopes young George, Jr carved from the wilderness nearly 70 years ago. Lake Superior will serve as your backdrop as you begin your bike journey as it leads you up and through the ancient Sawtooth Mountains, around inland glaciated lakes, across glacial eskers and through trails and forest roads of unparalleled wilderness beauty and splendor.

PART III MINNESOTA’S LAKE SUPERIOR COAST A. SETTING 1. Physical Environment a. Area Geography Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes and has the greatest surface area of any freshwater lake in the world. It contains almost 3,000 cubic miles of water, an amount that could fill all the other Great Lakes plus three additional Lake Eries. This is about 10 percent of the world’s fresh water. With an average depth approaching 500 feet, Lake Superior also is the coldest and deepest (1,332 feet) of the Laurentian Great Lakes. The lake stretches approximately 350 miles from the west to east, and 160 miles north to south, with a shoreline almost 2,800 miles long. The drainage basin, totaling 49,300 square miles, 89 percent of which is forested, encompasses parts of Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ontario (Lydecker 1976). Figure 1. A series of points beyond the bar are characteristic of the shore line of Keween awan Aows which dip gently toward the lake and strike at about 45 ° to the shore line. The spurs are formed by the main part of the Aow and the coves by the amygdaloidal zones. UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA MINNESOTA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY GEORGE M. SCHWARTZ MINNEAPOLIS • 1959 THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA PRESS PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AT THE LUND PRESS, INC., MINNEAPOLIS I~O Library of Congress Catalog Card Number: A59-9565 PUBLISHED IN CANADA BY THOMAS ALLEN, LTD., TORONTO FOREWORD Cook County forms the extreme northeastern part of Minnesota lying between Lake Superior and the Canadian border. Glaciation has scraped off the ridges, leaving bare rock or thin soil at many places. Preglacial erosion has left a rugged topography only moderately changed by ice action and characterized by beautiful long narrow parallel lakes. The position of the county on the north shore of the largest fresh-water lake in the world, which is also deep and cold, results in a relatively cool climate ideal for summer tourists but not favorable to most types of agriculture. As a consequence most of the county is still forested, a con siderable proportion belonging to the Superior National Forest, and roads are at a minimum.

The Lost Resorts of the North Shore ith the modern comfort of the Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts, it can be hard to imagine that the roots Wof our lakeside retreats run nearly a century deep. But the land on which each resort now stands has played host to North Shore visitors since long before the advent of snowboards and snowmobiles. In fact, these northern shores and nearby inland lakes were home to more than 50 individual resorts from 1926 to 1950. The first of the North Shore’s resorts – and the very first resort in all of Minnesota – began in 1886 as the Lutzen Resort when C.A.A. and Anna Nelson welcomed newly arrived homesteaders, explorers, prospectors and fishermen dropped at their home’s dock by the Steamboat Dixon.
