Community Help Line Hope you do not mind me contacting you - but as I know you have a social conscious I am sure you will forgive me....

I have set up an email address to allow people to volunteer to help those who will needing help over the next few months...we may all need some help at some point so be good to have a broad range of people on the list - as well as hopefully ensuring those most vulnerable are being looked after as much as possible....

If you are able to share this email address more widely so people can get in touch so we can co- ordinate the effort somewhat:

[email protected]

I am going to leaflet my closest neighbours and give them my telephone numbers - I am sure many of them will not have access to FB and the like...

If people can let me know what they are doing in the village / can do / need I will try to link people up as best I can.... GINNY BELSON

More trees for Steeple – and Guilden Morden

Steeple Morden Parish Council have enthusiastically endorsed and agreed to fund a project to add more trees in and around the village. Plans are also afoot in Guilden Morden to run a similar project. Trees are beautiful, provide a much needed habitat for wildlife under severe pressure, help to reduce air pollution, improve mental health and wellbeing, and mitigate the worst effects of climate change - because trees remove and store carbon from the atmosphere.

The best trees for supporting wildlife are generally those that are native to the UK and will thrive on our local soils. We’ll aim to source trees of varying sizes, suitable for different situations, and have been raised from native UK bred stock - with advice from the Woodland Trust and Tree Council. Everyone in our villages will be invited to get involved in some way to add more trees to our local landscape.

This could be by:  Offering a space for a tree in your garden – especially front gardens or with public paths alongside so they can be enjoyed by all.  Suggesting a space in the village you think would be suitable for a tree.  Local landowners, councils or groups offering to plant a tree or trees on their land – or allowing trees to be tagged in their hedgerows to allow them to grow into mature specimens.  Volunteering to help plant trees or adopt and care for a newly planted tree for its first few years.  Planting won’t begin until October at the earliest – so first we’ll be gathering your ideas and offers over the coming months. We hope you’ll join in, and that thinking about trees will give you something positive and hopeful to think about in these difficult days. Next time we’ll give more details of how to get involved. So watch this space!

Extracts from the Church Council AGM March 8th 2020

The PCC wish to record their grateful thanks to all who supported the running of our church last year. To the flower arrangers for their time and skills throughout the year, especially at Festivals, Weddings and Funerals when the church is always particularly welcoming. To all those who volunteer to keep the church clean and tidy each week. To those who gave their time at fund raising events for the church which included the ‘Spring Fair and Gift Day’ in April, ‘Cream Teas at the McKees’ in September, and the ‘Bring and Share Harvest Lunch’ held in the church in October. Special thanks to all who participated in another successful Christmas Tree Festival in the church in November when over 30 individually decorated trees from village societies and clubs were displayed, with great support from the school when each class year submitted a tree. Café Church continues to be held every Friday during term time – and we thank in particular those who help each week, making cakes and serving bacon butties, teas and coffee. Thanks to David Crow, David McKee and Tim Draper who maintain the War Memorial flower beds and the Garden of Rest. Finally, thank you to The Friends of SS Peter & Paul for their fundraising to maintain the church fabric, and most recently for their contribution towards the new lighting in the church. Steeple Morden’s Tree Planting Team

On 18 March Adam and Louise Bailey, Sue Norton, Nettie Traverse-Healy and Councillor Sacha Wheatley planted two trees on the conservation area near the tennis courts. The trees – a hornbeam and a whitebeam - were given to the village by South Cambs District Council and needed to be planted by the end of March. They will be watered over the summer and will hopefully be the first of many more new trees in the village when the community planting scheme gets underway next autumn.
