Alford War Memorials TF 455755 Alford is both a parish and a small but ancient market town. A small brook runs through the parish, which is 8 miles northeast of Spilsby and 13 miles southeast of Louth, and sits only six miles from the North Sea. The parish covers about 1,100 acres. © John Readman The parish church is of St. Wilfred’s, which is close to the centre of the town. Inside the church are several war memorials. These consist of the following:- Roll of Honour World War 1 Roll of Honour World War 2 A memorial to Richard James Sinclair in Northern Ireland 1972 A stained glass window for Maurice Nelson Baron Outside the church is the town’s war memorial, a cross upon four steps. The church is often open to the public, and all the memorials are easy to find within the church. Charles Ernest Yates: Private, 1st King’s Dragoon Guards: September 1st, 1914. THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE The Roll of Honour is on the north side of the church, close to the chancel steps. At present I do not know when it was erected in its present site, dedicated or unveiled. It is certainly an impressive memorial. It measures 650mm wide and 1050 mm high, dark wood frame and the material is vellum. The cartographer’s name is given beneath the writing as Phoebe Rennell, and the date alongside the name as 1920. Memorial Window for Maurice Nelson Baron The vicar during the war years was a Rev. Canon C. W. Baron, but during the Great War his eldest son, Maurice Nelson was killed on 15th August, 1917. After the war his family paid for a stained glass window to be erected in his memory. This beautiful window was erected in the north aisle of the church and unveiled on Sunday 31st May, 1919. This event was recorded in the Lincolnshire Chronicle in its edition of June 7th, 1919. “Ascension Day in Alford Parish Church saw the unveiling and dedication of a window erected in the church by the Rev. Canon C.W. Baron in memory of his eldest son. The ceremony was performed by Canon Tatham, Rector of Claxby by Well. © Lincolnshire Family History Society 2009 The window consists of three panels, on the right hand side is an effigy of the Archangel Michael, holding the sword and scales of Justice, standing on the head of the Prince of Darkness; while the left hand one represents St. George of England. The centre panel represents Sir Galahad seeing the vision of the Holy Gail, and bears the text "Their eyes shall see the King in his beauty; they shall behold a far reaching land". Beneath the text is the following inscription "To the Glory of God, and in loving memory of Maurice Nelson Baron, Flight Sub-Lieutenant, R.N.A.S., who was killed in action at Nieuport, Belgium, 15th August 1917, aged eighteen years ten months" [Researched by Charles Anderson] © John Readman © Lincolnshire Family History Society 2009 That inscription © John Readman The window is about 3050mm high and about 1805mm wide. The Committee examined the broken ring in light of this and noted that the suggested figure had an appropriate uplift on the bullion value of the equivalent amount of gold to reflect the item’s appeal. In agreement with the provisional valuer, the Committee recommended £180. Dock Museum hopes to acquire. NB – The Committee confirmed as a principle that the method of arriving at a recommended figure by means of the bullion value of the precious metal in an artefact (detailed in the minutes of the meeting of 20 April 2012) should only be applied when the item is non-descript and not of any particular recognisable form or function. In cases where the item’s form is clearly discerned, such as in the above example, where, although damaged, the item is clearly a ring, the Committee agreed that it would refer to the bullion value only to ensure that the recommended figure was at least equal to this amount. 2.     Muckton Wood Location and Access OS: 122 • GR: TF 382810 • Map ref: 66 16.70 hectares (41.20acres) • Freehold 1983 Habitat type: Woodland The wood is reached on foot by a 250-m access track, which leaves the Muckton- Belleau road about 1 km (0.6 miles) south of the village of Muckton at grid reference TF 381807. There is limited parking space on the road verge. Visitors are requested to keep to the rides and to go quietly. Description and Management This is an ancient semi-natural woodland on boulder clay soil on the eastern edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. Oak and ash are the dominant trees with abundant field maple, aspen on the wood margins and alder in the wetter areas. The understorey is dense in places with some neglected hazel coppice, hawthorn, blackthorn and honeysuckle. Bramble tends to dominate the ground flora, but there are many woodland flowers, including wood anemone, woodruff, moschatel, bluebell, wood-sorrel and an abundance of herb-Paris. Early-purple orchid, broad -leaved helleborine and butterfly orchid are also to be seen, along with both the soft- and hard-shield ferns. The wood is attractive to many warblers, and breeding birds include great spotted woodpecker, treecreeper and tree sparrow. When purchased in 1983, the wood was much neglected with a good deal of overstood hazel coppice and overgrown rides. Management so far has involved ride and ditch clearance, and bridge and pond construction. Traditional coppice- with-standards management has been re-established in parts of the wood. Believing that members, who have recently joined the Union> will find some little interest in knowing where field meetings have been held in the past, and that old members will not be displeased to be reminded of what districts have been visited, this resume has been drawn up. The information contained in it will also be of some use in making future arrangements for visiting the varied surface of our wide county. On June 12th, 1893, the first Field meeting was held at MABLETHORPE — a great day for lovers of nature. Many county naturalists, and also neighbours from adjacent counties, lent their aid in making the opening day a success. The out- come was the formation of the Lincolnshire Naturalists' Union, as now constituted. The second meeting was held on August 7th, at WOOD- H.\LL SPA, and a goodly number of species were recorded. May 24th, 1894, found the members at LINCOLN. The bank of the Fossdyke and Hartsholme \^^ood were investigated, and a general meeting was held in the evening. The late John Cordeaux, M.B.O.U., was in the chair, and vacated it on the election of Mr.
