pressinformation finboroughtheatre Lucifer Saved The world premiere of a new play by Finborough Theatre Playwright-in-Residence Peter Oswald Directed by Reuben Grove. Designed by Louie Whitemore. Lighting by Scott McMullin. Music by Alastair Putt. Cast: Penelope Dimond. Richard Franklin. Ria Jones. Jacob Krichefski. Tom Sangster. Pericles Snowdon. Liana Weafer. The world premiere of a new play by Peter Oswald, Finborough Theatre Playwright-in-Residence, opens on 30 October 2007 for a four week run as part of the multi-award-winning Finborough Theatre’s [ new work season 2007 ]. Lucian Willow has a dark past; so dark he can’t remember it. Twenty years after the end of the Second World War, a former Army Chaplain lives in a state of amnesia on his old comrade Lord Brook’s country estate, deep in the slumbering fields of England. The arrival of a circus from across the channel - with its anarchic forces of magic and comedy - impels these wounded men to confront their horrifying and entangled past. Written in verse and prose, Lucifer Saved is an astonishing interweaving of modern story and Christian myth, of tragedy and comedy, by the UK’s foremost verse playwright. Peter Oswald was writer-in-residence at the Globe Theatre where his plays The Storm, The Golden Ass and Augustine’s Oak were all produced. In 2005, his version of Schiller’s Mary Stuart, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, transferred to the West End after a sell-out run at the Donmar Warehouse. Other London credits include The Odyssey and Shakuntala (Gate Theatre), Dona Rosita: The Spinster (Almeida), Fair Ladies at a Game of Poem Cards (National Theatre), and Don Carlos (Lyric).

Once a promising painter herself, Claire now lives in the shadow of her husband’s illustrious career. While preparing work for his final show, Richard’s moods become increasingly erratic, and he is diagnosed with dementia. As his memory and behavior deteriorate, she shields his condition from the art community while trying to reconnect him with his estranged daughter and grandson from a previous marriage. Challenged by the loss of her world as she knew it, Claire must now decide whether to stand with Richard on the sidelines or step into the spotlight herself. DIRECTOR’S NOTES The Artist’s Wife was conceived out of several impulses: First among these was my desire to explore “the woman next to the man” in a marriage between two creatives.

  • Φ Mark Rylance Φ
PAPER TO BE WRITTEN IN THE “DARK HALF OF THE YEAR“ MARK RYLANCE 1. Biography Mark Rylance is a British actor, theatre director and playwright born in Ashford (Kent), England, on January 18, 1960 (time of birth unknown). He’s recognized not only for his period-specific enactments of both male and female roles in the works of William Shakespeare but also for his poignant portrayal of contemporary characters. He became involved with Shakespeare -and with acting- during his teen years. At age 16 he participated in his school’s Shakespeare festival, playing the title role in Hamlet. In 1978 he returned to the UK, where he studied with a scholarship in London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. In the early ’80s he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, delivering numerous successful RSC performances. Despite a reputation for questioning the authorship of plays attributed to Shakespeare, Rylance remained focused on them throughout the 1990s. In 1995 he became the first artistic director of London’s Globe Theatre, then under reconstruction; it opened in 1997. Under his directorship, the Globe re-created Shakespeare’s era through the use of all-male casts and period-appropriate music, costumes, sets, and stage techniques. Rylance stayed with the Globe until 2006, after which he began to receive greater recognition for his non-Shakespearean roles. In 2008 he made his Broadway debut. He has also acted in a number of movies for cinema and television. Lately he performed in 1 Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies (2015) and The BFG (2016). In the former he portrayed Soviet spy Rudolf Abel, which earned him an Academy Award.
