CATHOLIC LIFE NEWSLETTER St. Edmund Campion Pray for Us Dear Parents and Carers The end of our academic year is not how we envisaged when we started out on our school journey on the 2nd September 2019. Every aspect of school life has been disrupted – not least those students who had been preparing for their GCSE’s or ‘A’ level exams. From a Catholic Life point of view we were unable to complete our usual liturgical and prayer services that we had planned for Lent in preparation for the great feast of Easter. However, through the modern technology that we now have we have been able to maintain our links to our families and friends, our school and our church. Praying together as a member of all these groups we belong to has been made possible by the live streaming of mass and other resources for prayer and reflection that have been made available to us. Communication between us can take many forms and I would like to share with you this uplifting blessing for us from those who cannot communicate verbally but use Makaton signing: https://youtu.be/va048-XxFTI As we approach the end of term CAFOD (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development) have produced a National Assembly for all children in our country. The theme of the assembly is for our summer to be a ‘TIME OF HOPE’. Please take the time to share this with your children: https://youtu.be/Fk8XTLhvL0s We have all been finding new ways of living our day to day lives over the last few months as we stayed at home.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart A Parish History 1849 - 2004 The Church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Weston-in-Arden, Bulkington, Warwickshire Our Lady of the Sacred Heart - A Parish History - 1 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart - A Parish History - 2 A recent view of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church looking towards Mill Lane Our Lady of the Sacred Heart - A Parish History - 3 This history is dedicated to past, present and future generations of Weston parishioners INTRODUCTION It gives me great pleasure to introduce this updated Parish History dedicated to past, present, and future generations of Weston Parishioners. A parish community is a very special place where people come together to live out their faith initiated at Baptism, to receive the Sacraments, to have a deeper awareness of what their faith means in their lives and live out the Gospel message of Christ. As a parish family, together with the priest we share in the joys and sorrows of life and hopefully support each other when difficulties arise. This parish from its humble beginnings has built up a rich tapestry of faith which has influenced the wider village community in many ways. The following pages give us glimpse of parish life in days gone by and the people past and present who have made such a valuable contribution to its mission. I would like to pay tribute to all the fine priests that have served this parish and have gone before us. Their hard work and dedication has been outstanding. May the Lord reward these good and faithful servants.

NJPN North West Justice & Peace E-Bulletin March 2021 The e-bulletin for the North West, linked to the National Justice and Peace Network (NJPN), is produced jointly by the dioceses of Lancaster, Liverpool, Salford, Shrewsbury and Wrexham. Please send diary dates to [email protected] CATHOLIC CLIMATE AND ECOLOGICAL EMERGENCY NETWORK (CCLEEN) Since the middle of last year an informal group of Catholic organisations, networks, and individuals, has been meeting together to explore ways of highlighting concerns over the climate emergency and the need for Catholic hierarchy to speak out more forcibly in the public arena, and encourage Catholics to engage politically, in the broadest sense, on this issue. To this end a letter was sent to Cardinal Nichols and all Bishops of England and Wales asking that they meet with concerned representatives from their own diocese to discuss the specific issues raised in the letter. Positive responses have been received from a number of Bishops. It is hoped that people from each diocese will be able to meet with their own Bishop to take this initiative forward. RESPONSES • Diocesan Divestment from fossil fuels, (Lancaster, Middlesborough and Arundel and Brighton Dioceses have already committed to this) • Salford and Arundel & Brighton Bishops have each already written a Pastoral Letter on the environment • Salford – have a full time Environment worker & Laudato Si centre • Arundel & Brighton are working with the ECG (Ecological Conversion Group) & have already done good work • Liverpool – there is a process ongoing engaging the various parts of the Diocese on work to become sustainable • The Bishop of Shrewsbury replied to the letter saying there was no need for a meeting • CBCEW (The Catholic Bishops’ Conference for England and Wales) has produced “Global Healing” and “Global Caring” CaFE films for parishes, groups and individuals to use, along with leader’s resources for parish groups, events, etc.

CATHOLIC LIFE NEWSLETTER St. Edmund Campion Pray for Us Dear Parents and Carers ‘ So Eastertide Ends’. This is how the Prayer of the Church – the Divine Office that is said each day by priests, religious and lay people all across the world – concludes at the end of Evening Prayer on Pentecost Sunday. We now move into ‘Ordinary Time’. After a time of celebration or a holiday we all have to return to our ordinary lives. However, we might sometimes need to have something else planned just to ease ourselves back into our usual day to day routine. The Church it seems is no different. Although back in Ordinary Time, this Sunday we celebrate another great mystery of our faith – The Most Holy Trinity. This great feast allows us to bring together the preparation and sacrifices of Lent, the death and resurrection of Jesus that we celebrated at Easter and the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Bishop Robert Barron the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in the link below gives us an insight into the mystery of the Holy Trinity: https://youtu.be/hMI4rA4cuiM How we unlock the lockdown has dominated the news over the last week. Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster and Head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales spoke to this in his homily on Pentecost Sunday. In his address he said, “the benefits of being able to access places of prayer is profound, on individual and family stability and, significantly, on their willingness to help others in their need.” The full homily can be found in the link below: https://www.cbcew.org.uk/cardinal-nichols-now-is-the-time-for-the-phased-reopening-of-churches/ The Masses for the sick on Thursday evenings at 7pm continue this Thursday 4th June from the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist, Salford .

When I first learned of the founding of the Catholic Archives Society I felt a sense of deep relief, as many must have done. Every now and then one had heard of the irreparable loss of Catholic documents and wondered what future generations would think of us for allowing such things to happen. Mgr. Philip Hughes once stated that more than one third of the Catholic papers listed in the last century by the Historical Manuscripts Commission had been lost by the time he became archivist at Westminster. Lately, indeed, something has been done to avert further losses. The valuable papers of the Old Brotherhood still remaining have been gathered and bound and deposited for safe-keeping. A number of dioceses are now placing their records on permanent loan in county record offices established since the last war.

God has loved Fr Mike Maguire Assistant Priest us so much that in our fallen humanity He has rescued us Sharon Bowden Administrator from what makes us miserable in sin, suffering and death and Mike Guthrie Seminarian so transformed us in the death and Resurrection of Jesus that Fr Michael writes: He even calls us to share His own eternal joy. Today, What a wonderful conflation of richness and confluence of Pentecost, is the birthday of the Church when the same Holy grace and glory today, 31st May, presents. Principally it is Spirit Who, in the words of the Creed, “proceeds from the Pentecost, of course, the birthday of the Church, the celestial Father and the Son”, is given to us to make us alive together and divine fruit of the Paschal Mystery of the Passion, death in Christ. We become “one Body, one Spirit in Christ” as and Resurrection of Jesus, Son of God, Word made flesh. the Eucharistic Prayer teaches us also in Mass. Little wonder But today, too, has an echo of the Feast which 31st May then that we should celebrate and even dance with the angels usually is, the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to St with whom we rejoice now on earth and will do so forever Elizabeth.

In particular, the promotion of the value of Human Life continues to be at the forefront of the Department’s work and the response to particular cases and the changes to legislation have been particularly timely. The focus on end-of-life care has not been lost, mindful of the continuing need to be ready to respond to attempts to legalise assisted suicide. The Covid-19 Pandemic has given a particular focus to the work, especially with regard to the Vaccine programme, providing reassurance about its use and the service of the Common Good. The promulgation of the Holy Father’s Encyclical Fratelli Tutti, with its call for universal friendship and the “sincere gift of self to others” will continue to prompt the work of the Department at the service of the Church and the deeply significant place of Catholic Social Teaching for the life of the World. I take this opportunity to thank the Department Bishops and all who are engaged in life of the Department for all that has been achieved.
