  • Playlist in 1969, Yale University Admitted Its First Women Undergraduates, Thus Ending 268 Years As an All-Male College
YALE NEEDS WOMEN Playlist In 1969, Yale University admitted its first women undergraduates, thus ending 268 years as an all-male college. Yale Needs Women (Sourcebooks, 2019) tells their story. Here is the playlist to go with it: 22 songs released between 1969 and 1972, plus a two-song prelude from 1967. A quick scan will show that male performers outnumber women on this playlist, perhaps an odd choice given the Yale Needs Women title. It’s a reflection of the times, however. The music industry needed women too. You can find this playlist on Spotify. Search anne.g.perkins, or use this link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4aXLc1veNkKCMqCWd0biKE To find out more about Yale Needs Women and the first women undergraduates at Yale, go to yaleneedswomen.com. Many thanks to Rick High, Lily and Mac Perkins-High, and David and Ginger Kendall for their help in creating this playlist. Sources for the liner notes below are at the end. PRELUDE: 1967 1. Aretha Franklin, RESPECT. Aretha Franklin was the first woman ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and “Respect” was her first song to hit #1. She was twenty-five years old, six years into an abusive marriage that she would end in 1969, a black woman in a nation where that status meant double discrimination. “All I’m askin’ is for a little respect.” 2. Country Joe and The Fish, I-FEEL-LIKE-I’M-FIXIN’-TO-DIE RAG. Released in November 1967, the I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-To-Die Rag became one of the country’s most popular Vietnam War protest songs, particularly after its performance at Woodstock in August 1969.

  • Ruth Frankel Professor Swedberg CAS WS214 May 2, 2013 Carole
Ruth Frankel Professor Swedberg CAS WS214 May 2, 2013 Carole King: A Consequential Female Artist in Achievement and Message Carole King, a Brooklyn born singersongwriter, most associated with the music of the 1960s and 1970s, is significant in that she, according to her biographer James Perone, “almost singlehandedly opened the doors of popular music songwriting to women” (1). She also became the first female artist in American popular music in complete control of her own work. Her writing was prolific. She has written 500 copyrighted songs throughout her career and has had tremendous commercial success (Havranek 236). King’s greatest success was the release of the 1973 album Tapestry, which remained on the charts for 302 weeks (Perone 6). Though her cultural impact is often underappreciated, Carole King has been an important contributor to advancement of women in the music industry and a positive role model to the female audiences of her generation. It is even hard to find academic sources reflecting the success and cultural attributions of King. Overall, it appears that sexism has faded the memory of Carole King’s contribution to women in music. Again and again, King impact has not been recognized or remembered. For example, in the book Go, Girl, Go!: The Women’s Revolution in Music by James Dickerson, King’s name is mentioned only once. Dickerson writes, “Carly Simon and Carole King were the two most successful singersongwriters of the decade, and of the two, it was Carly who was dazzling the world with her toothy smile and sexy album covers” (77).

Norah Jones first emerged on the world stage with the February 2002 release of Come Away With Me, her self- described "moody little record" that introduced a singular new voice and grew into a global phenomenon, sweeping the 2003 Grammy Awards and signaling a paradigm shift away from prevailing pop music of the time. Since then Norah has sold 45 million albums worldwide and became a 9-time Grammy-winner. Now Norah has come full circle with Day Breaks, her remarkable sixth album which finds her returning to her jazz roots while also proving her to be this era's quintessential American artist, the purveyor of an unmistakably unique sound that weaves together the threads of several bedrock styles of American music: country, folk, rock, soul and jazz. Day Breaks is a kindred spirit with Come Away With Me, though it is unquestionably the work of a mature artist who has lived life and grown immensely in her craft. Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. BEAUTIFUL – The Carole King Musical tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history.
