Exhortation December 27, 2020 Matthew 11:28-30; Hebrews 7:23-28 To the Uttermost Gentle and Lowly- The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers Dane Ortlund I. What is Christ doing NOW- Real Time? a. Neglected doctrine- The heavenly intercession of Christ, what he is doing NOW. b. There is much written on what Christ DID in his life, death, and resurrection to save us. c. For many of us, our functional Jesus is not really doing anything now; all of our salvation has been accomplished. d. We will consider Christ’s heavenly intercession, not only because it is neglected, but it is a part of Christ’s work that is uniquely reflective of his heart. II. Consider Justification and its relation to intercession a. To be justified is to be declared perfectly righteous in Christ. b. We are declared right with God not once we get our act together, but an honest acknowledgement that we never will. c. But this has happened in the past. “Therefore, since we have been justified...” Romans 5:1. d. Consider intercession- Christ’s heart is a steady reality flowing through time. The present manifestation of his heart for his people is his constant interceding on their behalf. III. What is Intercession? a. Christ intercedes between us and the Father, but why? Was something left incomplete in our justification? Isn’t it the FINISHED work of Christ? b. ANSWER: Intercession applies what the atonement accomplished. c. It is a reflection of the fullness and victory and completeness of his earthly work, not a reflection of anything lacking in his earthly work. -

The Meaning of the Intercessory Ministry of Jesus Christ on Our Behalf in the Heavenly Sanctuary Jiří Moskala Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Andrews University Introduction Adventist theology differentiates between the “complete” atonement accomplished by Jesus Christ on the cross, and the “completed” atonement in relationship to His intercessory ministry in heaven on humanity’s behalf.1 What happened on the cross is a unique, unparalleled, non-repeatable, and unprecedented divine act of salvation (Heb 10:12, 14) from which all the benefits flow out, including the intercessory ministry of Christ for us today.2 1 See, for example, the statement of the former dean of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, Dr. W. The full at-one-ment, i.e., the complete harmony between God and His creation will be reached when sin is eradicated and evil is no longer present (1 Cor 15:24-28; Eph 1:10). First, the joy fellowship with those who love us, encourage us, help us, pray for us, and are united with us in sharing the Gospel brings our hearts. Second, is the fact we need fellowship with one another in the hard times if we are going to have joy in every circumstance. Drew Tucker’s statement emphasizes this point, “All of us are stronger than any one of us.” Fellowship, koinonia, is not an extra in the Christian life. It is an essential. 1 But what does fellowship really look like? In Philippians 2:1–4 Paul gives a biblical description of fellowship. Then in Philippians 2:5–11 he teaches that true fellowship means thinking like Jesus, and as he does, he gives one of the greatest passages about Christ in the New Testament. -

The [email protected] Old Testament had a distinct purpose before Christ came and has its place in David Ulderich the revelation of God to man since the first advent. The New Testament has 441-3964 its place between the two advents of Christ. Both will have served their [email protected] purpose and will cease when Christ comes again. This is true of all the John Dawson ordinances, terms of Salvation, and worship which are revealed in the New 695-6780 Testament. The church will have completed its mission at that time. Baptism will have served its purpose when Christ comes. The Deacons Commission which Jesus gave to go into the world and preach the gospel to Dennis Richardson the whole creation, contains baptism; the commission is enforced between William Blow the two advents of Christ. JETS 53/4 (December 2010) 773–85 THE NATURE OF ATONEMENT IN THE THEOLOGY OF JACOBUS ARMINIUS j. matthew pinson* Jacobus Arminius is one of the best known and least studied theologians in the history of Christianity. His writings have been neglected by Calvinists and Arminians alike. Calvinists have disliked him because of his opposition to scholastic predestinarian theology. Most Arminians have neglected him because what little they have read of him reminds them more of Calvinism than they like. Arminius scholar Carl Bangs is correct when he says that most modern treatments of Arminius assume a definition of Arminianism that does not come from Arminius. Bangs states that most interpreters of Arminianism begin with a preconception of what Arminius should be expected to say, then look in his published works, and do not find exactly what they are looking for. They show impatience and disappointment with his Calvinism, and shift the inquiry into some later period when Arminianism turns out to be what they are looking for—a non-Calvinistic, synergistic, and perhaps semi-Pelagian system.1 This is the approach many scholars have taken toward Arminius regard- ing his doctrine of atonement. For example, the Calvinist scholar Robert L. Reymond has said that the Arminian theory of atonement is the governmental theory, which “denies that Christ’s death was intended to pay the penalty for sin.” He claims that the governmental theory’s “germinal teachings are in Arminius.”2 Similarly, well-known Wesleyan-Arminian scholar James K. Grider states: “A spillover from Calvinism into Arminianism has occurred in recent decades. -

The Present Work of Christ in Hebrews David J. MacLeod Dean of the Graduate Program, Emmaus Bible College Dubuque, Iowa Several years ago a number of writers voiced the concern that at tention to the present work of Christ has been "largely neglected" by the systematic theologians of the church.1 The authors of the New Testament would not have understood such neglect, for Christ's pre sent work is one of their most important themes. The purpose of this article is to examine the work of one of those authors, the epistle to the Hebrews, and to outline its contribution to the subject. There are at least three reasons for such a study. First, to neglect any theme central to apostolic Christianity can impoverish Chris tians and the church. Second, attention needs to be drawn to some aspects of the subject neglected in earlier studies of Hebrews. Third, it is hoped that the material presented will aid Bible students who teach and write on the Christology of the New Testament. Owen’s writings on this subject helps us to see in a profound way that every as- pect of Christ’s work is based upon an act of divine love and good pleasure in which Christ has come to us in order to restore us to fellowship with God. The Divine counsel stands at the basis of Owen understanding of Christ mediatorial work. In all their aspects, Owen’s Christological reflections represent a restatement of orthodox Christology which stands in fundamental con- tinuity with the Reformed tradition, particularly in its use of the threefold office of Christ. What emerges in Owen regarding Christ as Mediator is positively shaped by the intratrinitari- an relations defined by the covenant of redemption and the three-fold office of Christ as prophet, priest, and king which preserve both, the historical and the eternal dimensions. There is nothing more demanded from the church of the present day than the revival of the idea the we live in him who is our High Priest in heaven. The primary research question is defined as: “To what extent do the dialogues under analysis relate to Arminian soteriology?” By seeking an answer to this question, new knowledge is sought on the current soteriological position of the Methodist-Lutheran dialogues, the contemporary Methodist theology and the commonalities between the Lutheran and Arminian understanding of soteriology. This way the soteriological picture of the Methodist-Lutheran discussions is clarified. The dialogues under analysis were selected on the basis of versatility. Firstly, the sole world organisation level dialogue was chosen: The Church – Community of Grace. Additionally, the document World Methodist Council and the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification is analysed as a supporting document. Secondly, a document concerning the discussions between two main-line churches in the United States of America was selected: Confessing Our Faith Together. -

Course Description This first course in systematic theology introduces the student to the methodology of theology (Prolegomena) and the doctrines of revelation, God, humanity, and the person of Christ. The biblical foundations and the relevant historical developments are considered in construction of a Christian understanding of each doctrine. Student Learning Outcomes The student, by the end of the course, should: 1. Be able to understand theological method and the doctrines of revelation, God, humanity, and the person of Christ biblically, historically, and systematically. 2. Be able to apply theology by integrating these doctrines into a coherent, comprehensive, and consistent Christian worldview. 3. Be able to communicate these doctrines in the particular ministry calling and context of the learner. Statement on Biblical Authority In order to develop competent theological researchers for the twenty-first century church and academy, students in this course will be exposed to seminal works in Christian theology from a wide array of theological perspectives, including the influential works of many prominent non-evangelical and liberal theologians. Students are expected to become familiar with and demonstrate advanced, biblically guided critical engagement with the works of these thinkers.
