QAD Mission Statement Qatar Academy offers a rigorous program encompassing an international English-medium education, strong Arabic and Islamic Studies. The QA community supports and challenges students to be active and contributing members of society, through learning experiences serving the needs, interests and learning of each student. Date: 18th Oct 2018 Primary School Akhbar Further in line with professional learning, and more specifically related to health and safety, we wish to ensure that our parent community is aware of the lengths to which we are going to make QAD safe and secure for your children. Since August, the QAD faculty and staff have been engaged in ongoing child protection training. The aim of the training is to be able to identify and support those members of our community, inclusive of students and faculty, who may be at risk of social, emotional, psychological or physical harm and in turn what to do about addressing the risk. Qatar Foundation Schools has developed policy on reporting strategies, policies and procedures for the varying members that make up our school community. At this time, all QAD Admin have undergone Child Protection Officer Training, a level of training that allows us to make our school environment even safer for students, including the development, refinement, and implementation of safe practices; procedures for what to do if we believe that a child is at risk; procedures for who to approach or report it to; what actions to take. Further, all QAD support and professional staff have undergone Child Safeguarding training. These efforts focused on identification of risky situations, documentation of their observations, how to escalate a concern as well as to whom the concern should be raised. We further revised and internalized the Qatar Foundation Schools code of conduct for staff in relation to safeguarding pupils. Finally this past week we have engaged all the service providers at QAD, people who come into contact with our students during the course of the day in typically public areas of our school. We have worked to train our security staff, cleaning staff as well as cafeteria staff on the obligations and expectations that come with working within QAD. In providing this training we have worked with the management of each of the service providers to ensure that translation from English to first language was provided. We hold all members of our community responsible for ensuring that the safety and wellbeing of each and every QAD student is our first priority. We have been asked by our friends at the QAD Recreation Center to reach out to our parent community for support. The QAD Recreation Center entrance is being used for pick up and drop off by QAD students at the start and end of each school day. Please limit pick up and drop off of QAD students to ONLY one of the following alternatives: the Primary School main entrance, Primary School teardrop roundabout entrance, Senior School Main Entrance or the Western Car park pick up and drop off areas. Your support in addressing this urgent matter with your drivers is as well greatly appreciated. Finally, this week marks our 8th week in session since the start of the new academic year and, at the end of which, we are rewarded with a well-deserved semester break. We thank our parents and community members for the support demonstrated that has allowed us to so successfully start this year, build our momentum while carrying forward with such positivity, energy and focus on exceptional teaching and learning. Please enjoy your mid-semester break. • Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam in Qatar
Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam in Qatar Rehenuma Asmi Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy under the executive committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Rehenuma Asmi All rights reserved ABSTRACT Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam Rehenuma Asmi My study explores language ideologies in the capital city of Doha, Qatar, where school reform movements are placing greater emphasis on English language acquisition. Through ethnography and a revised theory of language ideologies, I argue that as languages come in greater contact in multi-lingual spaces, mediation must occur between the new and old relationships that are emerging as a result of population growth, policy changes and cross-cultural interactions. I interrogate the development concept of the “knowledge economy” as it is used to justify old and new language ideologies regarding Arabic and English. As Qataris change their education systems in response to the economic development framework of the “knowledge economy,” they are promoting language ideologies that designate English as useful for the economy and “global” citizenship and Qatari Arabic and Standard Arabic as useful for religious and cultural reasons. I argue that Standard English, through its association with the “knowledge economy,” becomes “de-localized” and branded an “international” language. This ideology presents English as a modern language free of the society in which it is embedded, to circulate around the globe. In contrast, Standard Arabic is represented as stiff, archaic language of religious traditions and Qatari Arabic is presented as the language of oral culture and ethnonationalism.
