Language Contact in Pomerania: the Case of German, Polish, and Kashubian
P a g e | 1 Language Contact in Pomerania: The Case of German, Polish, and Kashubian Nick Znajkowski, New York University Purpose The effects of language contact and language shift are well documented. Lexical items and phonological features are very easily transferred from one language to another and once transferred, rather easily documented. Syntactic features can be less so in both respects, but shifts obviously do occur. The various qualities of these shifts, such as whether they are calques, extensions of a structure present in the modifying language, or the collapsing of some structure in favor the apparent simplicity found in analogous foreign structures, all are indicative of the intensity and the duration of the contact. Additionally, and perhaps this is the most interesting aspect of language shift, they show what is possible in the evolution of language over time, but also what individual speakers in a single generation are capable of concocting. This paper seeks to explore an extremely fascinating and long-standing language contact situation that persists to this day in Northern Poland—that of the Kashubian language with its dominating neighbors: Polish and German. The Kashubians are a Slavic minority group who have historically occupied the area in Northern Poland known today as Pomerania, bordering the Baltic Sea. Their language, Kashubian, is a member of the Slavic branch of Indo-European languages and further belongs to the Pomeranian branch of Lechitic languages, which includes Polish, Silesian, and the extinct Polabian and Slovincian. The situation to be found among the Kashubian people, a people at one point variably bi-, or as is sometimes the case among older folk, even trilingual in Kashubian, P a g e | 2 Polish, and German is a particularly exciting one because of the current vitality of the Kashubian minority culture. -
Occurrence and Removal of Polymeric Material Markers in Water Environment: a Review
Desalination and Water Treatment 186 (2020) 406–417 www.deswater.com May doi: 10.5004/dwt.2020.25564 Occurrence and removal of polymeric material markers in water environment: a review Michał Chrobok*, Marianna Czaplicka Institute of Environmental Engineering Polish Academy of Sciences, Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie 34, 41-819 Zabrze, Poland, Tel. +48 32 271 64 81; emails: [email protected] (M. Chrobok), [email protected] (M. Czaplicka) Received 20 September 2019; Accepted 3 February 2020 abstract Alkylphenols (AP) and bisphenol A (BPA) are chemicals belonging to the endocrine-disrupting com- pound group. These compounds have a negative influence on the endocrine system of both humans and wildlife. Adverse effects include serious reproductive and developmental disorders, such as femi- nization of the population, especially in wildlife. AP and BPA are commonly used in household items and industrial applications or as monomers or additives in plastic production. Methods for AP and BPA degradation can be divided into four main groups. In membrane-type processes, the important factor is membrane selection. Good results were obtained with the application of dense nanofiltration or reverse osmosis membranes. The selection of bacterial or fungi species is crucial for biological treat- ment. Sphingomonas and Pseudomonas sp. are known for their good organic compound degradation capabilities. The oxidation process is based on the proper selection of an oxidation agent and catalyst when needed. Hydrogen peroxide and ozone are often mentioned in the literature. Common catalysts are UV radiation, Fe2+ ions, or oxides of tin, zinc, and titanium. In sorption processes, the selection of the sorbent is important. -
Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Baracca Kaszubskie Liceum
ONLINE EXCHANGE BRESCIA & BRUSY Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Baracca Kaszubskie Liceum Ogólnokształcące w Brusach 2021 Elisa Lacagnina Thanks to the Etwinning platform I had the possibility to know Ms. Alicja Frymark, English teacher from Kashubian Secondary School (Kaszubskie Liceum Ogólnokształcące) in Brusy, Poland. Since our first online meeting on Skype, we have kept talking, most of all, of our school project called “Online exchange - Brescia & Brusy”. To start, we decided to assign our students a partner to make them work in pairs. Their task was to exchange emails with their friend about the topic given and then, with the information, to write a short article in English. We assigned different topics like Covid 19 and lockdown; traditional food; language uses; interesting facts about the city, the country and the region; school; local tradition. The first part of the project went really well and I was satisfied with the work done. My 5th-year students are enthusiastic about having a “virtual” foreign partner. I decided to start an online exchange because my students felt the need to improve their English speaking and writing skills, as we have only 3 hour English a week. According to me, these opportunities are not only useful to improve the language skills but also to expand your knowledge, to meet new people, to know about the uses and the customs of different countries. Moreover, it was the right moment to start a project of this kind precisely in this difficult period. We have been experiencing a different life, due to Covid 19 home–schooling, restrictions, curfews, prohibitions etc. -

The Inner Puck Bay Is of Special Interest Because at the Brake of The
Bulletin of the Maritime Institute Gdansk, 1993, 20, 1 Rajmund Dubrawski, Asst. Prof. Dr. Pharm. Department of Maritime Hydrotechnics The Maritime Institute in Gdansk EVALUATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROCESSES IN BORROW PITS ON THE STATE OF INNER PUCK BAY Abstract The inner Puck Bay is of special interest because at the brake of the seventies a very deep environmental and biocenotic transformation occured in this basin in result of cumulated influence of antropogenic factors. At present, in order to protect the seacoast of the Hel Peninsu la, sand is dredged from the Puck Bay. In effect, in the bottom of the I bay's coastal zone five borrow pits have been formed. It was expected that in these pits may develop processes which could negatively in fluence the existing ecosystem of the bay, and become an additional cause of Puck Bay devastation. Results of investigations carried out in the years 1991-1992 proved that such processes do occur and that they might negatively influence the Puck Bay environment. 1. INTRODUCTION Since 1989 the seaward coast of the Hel Peninsula is protected by artificial nourishment with sandy material dredged from the coastal 80 R. Dubrawski zone of the inner Puck Bay. As a side-effect of the works, in the Puck Bay appeared a row of pits, separated by natural hollows. The borrow pits have decidedly different sedimentation, metabolic, hydrochemical and biologic properties from areas of neighbouring bottom and natural hollows (Chalupy Hollow and Kuznica Hollow). The area of the inner Puck Bay is the most strongly accumulative part of the Gulf of Gdansk, and the area in which the pits have been formed - Wladyslawowo and Chalupy- is the most strongly accumulative part of the inner Puck Bay. -
The Results of Palynological Investigations As the Evidence of Development of the Rzucewo Culture Neolithic Settlement on the Coast of the Puck Lagoon
Polish Geological Institute Special Papers, 16 (2005): 65–70 Proceedings of the Workshop “Reconstruction of Quaternary palaeoclimate and palaeoenvironments and their abrupt changes” THE RESULTS OF PALYNOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AS THE EVIDENCE OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE RZUCEWO CULTURE NEOLITHIC SETTLEMENT ON THE COAST OF THE PUCK LAGOON Gra¿yna MIOTK-SZPIGANOWICZ1, Danuta KRÓL2 Abstract. Archaeological investigations have been performed for years in the vicinity of the Rzucewo Headland, on the wes- tern shore of the Puck Lagoon. The best known site of the Neolithic Rzucewo Culture is located there. Also palynological in- vestigation was performed earlier in this area. The present article is an attempt at recapitulating the obtained information. Materials for the palynological tests came both from organic sediments, which occur on the shore of the present Lagoon, and directly from archaeological excavations. The obtained results of both the palynological and archaeological tests made it possible to find out that the earliest traces of the economic activity of humans in this area belong to settlement which was earlier than that of the Rzucewo Culture. This Paraneolithic settlement is dated at the end of the Atlantic Period. The area under investigation was covered then by peatlands and lake, which determined that the main economic activity of humans was fishing, and animal husbandry done on a small scale was only an extra activity of the then population. Archaeologically dated at 4400–3700 years BP, the settlement of the Rzucewo Culture developed when the sea transgressed into the area of the present Puck Lagoon. The results of the research shows that in the economic activity of the inhabitants of the settlement both animal husbandry and farming were treated as matters of secondary importance, while fishing and seal hunting were the main activities. -

Tentaculites of the Upper Silurian and Lower Devonian of Poland
ACT A PAL A EON T 0 LOG ICA POLONICA Vol. XIX 1974 No. 4 BARBARA HAJI..ASZ TENTACULITES OF THE UPPER SILURIAN AND LOWER DEVONIAN OF POLAND Abstract. - The tentaculites, described in the present paper, come from the Upper Silurian deposits of the Baltic coastal region and the Lower Devonian deposits of the Radom-Lublin region. The Upper Silurian assemblage of tentaculites allows one to compare and correlate the Upper Silurian deposits of Northern Europe. The Lower Devonian tentaculites are' indicative of the Gedinnian and Siegenian age of the deposits under study and of their close correlations primarily with Podolia. PART I INTRODUCTION In Poland, the tentaculites have not so far been described in detail. Giirich (1895) was the first to take an interest in the tentaculites occurring in this country. He described the following species from the Holy Cross Mountains: Tentaculites sp. d. intermedium Barr., T. multiformis Sandb., T.ornatus? Sow., T. schlotheimi Koken., T. polonicus Gurich., T. sand bergeri Gurich, T. tenuicinctus Sandb., Styliolites sp. From the same region, the following species were identified by Paj chlowa (1957): Tentaculites schlotheimi Koken., Tentaculites sp., Styliolina laevis Richter and Styliolina sp. The tentaculites of the species Homoc tenus tenuicinctus (Roem.), Homoctenus sp., Styliolina laevis Richter and Styliolina sp. were distinguished by Koscielniakowska (1962-1967) in the Frasnian deposits of these region. The present writer described the following Eifelian tentaculites from the Holy Cross Mts and the Cracow-Cz~stochowaUpland (Hajlasz, 1967): Tentaculites schlotheimi Koken., T. subconicus Geinitz, T.sp., and Dicri coconus mosolovicus (Ljasch.). Next, a list of species from Lower Devonian of the Lublin area was published (Hajlasz, 1968).
