Kwalificaties koopman, bankier, industrieel, reder, kunstverzamelaar, opdrachtgever, mecenas Grill collected art by Dutch and Swedish painters, as well as Chinese objects. The Grill family lived in the Grill house in Stockholm until 1764, when he bought the Torstensonska Palace (= Arvfurstens palats) at the Gustav Adolfs torg, Stockholm. In the early 1740s he had the famous country residence Svindersvik built.

He married to Anna Johanna Grill, the granddaughter of Martin Mytens (I). The couple had two children, Adolf Ulric, collector and natural scientist, and a daughter, Anna Johanna, who donated The Conspiracy of Claudius Civilis to the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts.
