  • Give Me Excess of Hampson
Play On: Give Me Excess of Hampson By Janos Gereben—October 2, 2008 Humans, in general, mellow with age. Thomas Hampson doesn't. Au contraire, he is more intense, dramatic, overwhelming, multitasking, brilliant than ever. Beyond the simple excellence of his other master classes, such as the one in Wigmore or in the old S.F. Conservatory of Music, his six hours over Thursday and tonight went beyond all expectations. Here he was, in the new Conservatory building, at the first "LIEDER ALIVE!" master workshop, singing duets of traditionally "single-voice" lieder, massaging skulls (his own and those of others), discussing music, literature, psychology, anatomy, the transporter beaming process in "Star Trek" (more about that later), and other subjects too numerous to list. The two evenings were reminiscent of what was going on in the nearby War Memorial: the amaZing excess, surfeit, daZZle of "Die Tote Stadt." Another similarity: above all, both events are about music, other factors - however numerous - be damned. And yet, sometimes it was difficult to remember that main theme, watching Katherine Tier surrounded by Hampson phantoms - one pressing in on the meZZo's cheekbones, the other singing "Kindertotenlieder" with her, the third in throes of the grief and resolution she should convey, and the fourth thundering an interpretation of the text speaking of the eyes of dead children becoming stars of future nights: "It happens. Your children will not stay with you. And guess what: you will die too. It's OK." And suddenly, instead of crumbling under that manifold "attack," Tier sang "Nun seh'ich, wohl, warum so dunkle Flammen" beautifully, with an understanding of its subtle catharsis, rather than sentimentally.

Time Magazines lista över ”Top 100 Most Influential People”.

  • The Blake Collection in Memory of Nancy M
The Blake Collection In Memory of Nancy M. Blake BELLINI’S NORMA featuring CECILIA BARTOLI This tragic opera is set in Roman-occupied, first-century Gaul, features a title character, who although a Druid priestess, is in many ways a modern woman. Norma has secretly taken the Roman proconsul Pollione as her lover and had two children with him. Political and personal crises arise when the locals turn against the occupiers and Pollione turns to a new paramour. Norma “is a role with emotions ranging from haughty and demanding, to desperately passionate, to vengeful and defiant. And the singer must convey all of this while confronting some of the most vocally challenging music ever composed. And if that weren't intimidating enough for any singer, Norma and its composer have become almost synonymous with the specific and notoriously torturous style of opera known as bel canto — literally, ‘beautiful singing’” (“Love Among the Druids: Bellini's Norma,” NPR World of Opera, May 16, 2008). And Bartoli, one of the greatest living opera divas, is up to the challenges the role brings. (New York Public Radio’s WQXR’s “OperaVore” declared that “Bartoli is Fierce and Mercurial in Bellini's Norma,” Marion Lignana Rosenberg, June 09, 2013.) If you’re already a fan of this opera, you’ve no doubt heard a recording spotlighting the great soprano Maria Callas (and we have such a recording, too), but as the notes with the Bartoli recording point out, “The role of Norma was written for Giuditta Pasta, who sang what today’s listeners would consider to be mezzo-soprano roles,” making Bartoli more appropriate than Callas as Norma.

  • Anna Netrebko Has Redefined What It Means to Be an Opera Star, Becoming Perhaps the Most Celebrated Soprano in the World
mli^o=jrpf`=mofwb=i^rob^qb=OMOMW=^kk^=kbqob_hl= “A soprano with star power in the best sense, a charismatic expressivity that pervades every element of her performance.” – Anthony Tomassini, New York Times The reigning prima donna of the 21st century, Anna Netrebko has redefined what it means to be an opera star, becoming perhaps the most celebrated soprano in the world. In live performance and on award-winning recordings, her portrayals of opera’s most iconic heroines have already made an indelible mark. Now, as she ventures into bolder, more dramatic repertoire, she continues to reach new heights. From singing at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics to becoming the first classical artist named to TIME magazine’s list of the world’s 100most influential people, Anna serves as opera’s leading global ambassador and is widely recognized as one of today’s most compelling, committed performing artists in any genre. Offstage, on social media, she shares her infectious joie de vivre–along with her love of family, fashion, and food–inspiring people to live their most colorful lives and to celebrate what makes them unique. Now at the peak of her powers, Anna is drawing on the exceptional maturation of her voice to conquer the most demanding roles of her career. Her title role debut in Giovanna d’Arcoat the 2013 Salzburg Festival, and the concurrent release of her Verdi album on Deutsche Grammophon, marked the major turning point when she began to leave behind the lighter, more lyric roles for which she had first become known.

In this concert version we don’t have to worry about Norma’s boys acting sensitively-our focus is on the heavenly music. As was customary in Italian operas at the time there is a fast, joyous cabaletta to round off the scene with Norma and Adalgisa promising to be lifelong “comrades”. Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” “Sulla tomba” Edgar reflects on the tombs of his ancestors, Lucia joins him (turning his solo into a duet) and then the “big tune” is sung 3 times (listen out for a celebratory “wiggle” in the orchestra as they finish singing!) CD : Pavarotti & Sutherland cond.Bonynge/ROH/Decca Pavarotti and Sutherland were at their best in the Bel Canto repertoire. YouTube: Beczala & Netrebko In this extended scene Edgardo (Beczala) sings of his impending journey to France in the Stuart cause. Lucia (Netrebko) begs him to keep their love secret from her brother Enrico. Edgardo has sworn by his father’s grave to gain vengeance, but the music softens, the lovers kiss (cue applause!) Lucia sings “Verrano a te sull’aure” which Edgardo takes up and after her maid warns them to be on their way, both sing the “big tune” in unison.

  • Strauss' Four Last Songs
Richard Strauss: Four Last Songs A discographical survey by Ralph Moore I consider forty-six recordings of the Vier Letzte Lieder here, which is a goodly number, but by no means the total of all of those released in the nearly seventy years since their premiere in 1950. A survey cannot hope – or even want – to encompass every version but I have tried to include the most notable and have deliberately missed out a few which I know to be less than premium quality but have also reviewed one or two in the “caveat emptor” category as best avoided (see also MWI review index). These songs feature frequently in lists of personal nominations for favourite recordings, such as in the BBC radio programme “Desert Island Discs”. They are not a cycle as such, but all deal with the readiness for death and emanate a sense of calm, resignation and even transfiguration; I quote unashamedly from Wikipedia: “Towards the end of Im Abendrot, after the soprano's intonation of ‘Ist dies etwa der Tod?’ (‘Is this perhaps death?’), Strauss musically quotes his own tone poem Death and Transfiguration, written 60 years earlier. As in that piece, the quoted seven-note phrase (known as the ‘transfiguration theme’) has been seen as the fulfilment of the soul through death.” They are amenable to successful performance by a range of soprano voice-types, from the mezzo- tinged soprano falcon of Jessye Norman to the light, lyric sopranos of Lucia Popp or Anneliese Rothenberger, and although one or two sopranos have come a cropper in attempting them, there are many more admirable and even superlative recordings than failures.

  • Legendary Impresario Raymond Gubbay to Publish His Autobiography: Lowering the Tone & Raising the Roof
LEGENDARY IMPRESARIO RAYMOND GUBBAY TO PUBLISH HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY: LOWERING THE TONE & RAISING THE ROOF PUBLICATION DATE: 20TH MAY 2021, FROM QUILLER PUBLISHING Few people have transformed the UK’s musical scene more than impresario Raymond Gubbay. He recounts over fifty years in the business in his forthcoming autobiography, Lowering the Tone & Raising the Roof, presenting orchestral music, opera and dance to millions. In this much-anticipated autobiography, Gubbay brings to life his extraordinary career and the many great personalities he’s worked with. With a provenance rich in history and talent, he retraces the musical legacy of his family, growing up in a liberal Jewish household in 1950s post-war London and the challenges he faced while embarking on his musical journey after a few failed attempts at corporate conformity. Passionate and enigmatic, this memoir delves right into the heart of 1960s performing arts, with Gubbay setting up on his own when he started with a handful of performers touring to modest venues around the country, building a brand and a style which seemed very much in tune with the times. Later working alongside some of the most prestigious classical and popular artists of our time – from Yehudi Menuhin, Luciano Pavarotti and the English National Ballet to Ray Charles, Miles Davis and Andrew Lloyd- Webber – Gubbay has witnessed and played a hand in promoting and producing some of the most iconic performances of opera, ballet and classical music ever staged in some of the largest music venues in Britain, including the Royal Festival Hall, Symphony Hall Birmingham – and not least of all at the Royal Albert Hall.
