SAVELLE2 (Received 30 January 1986; accepted in revised form 6 October 1986) ABSTRACT. During his four years’ residence in the Canadian Arctic in search of a Northwest Passage in 1829-33, John Ross wrote a private letter to Francis Beaufort, Hydrographer of the Navy. The letter, reproduced here, provides valuable historical insights into many aspects of Ross’s character and of the expedition generally. His feelings of bitterness toward several of his contemporaries, especially John Barrow and William E. Parry, due to the ridicule suffered as a result of the failure of his first arctic voyage in 1818, are especially revealing, as is his apparently uneasy relationship with his nephew and second-in-command, James Clark Ross. Ross’s increasing despair andpessimism with each succeeding enforced wintering and, eventually, the abandonment of the expedition ship Victory are also clearly evident. Finally,the understandable problems of maintaining crew discipline during the final year of the expedition, though downplayed, begin to emerge. ITALY IN THE ARCTIC: MORE THAN A CENTURY OF HISTORY The history of the Italian presence in the Arctic dates back to 1899, when Luigi Amedeo di Savoia, Duke of the Abruzzi, sailed from Archangelsk with his ship (christened Stella Polare) to use the Franz Joseph Land as a stepping stone. The plan was to reach the North Pole on sleds pulled by dogs. His expedition missed its target, though it reached previously unattained latitudes. In 1926 Umberto Nobile managed to cross for the first time the Arctic Sea from Europe to Alaska, taking off from Rome together with Roald Amundsen (Norway) and Lincoln Ellsworth (USA) on the Norge airship (designed and piloted by Nobile). They were the first to reach the North Pole, where they dropped the three national flags. 1 Two years later Nobile attempted a new feat on a new airship, called Italia. Operating from Kings Bay (Ny-Ålesund), Italia flew four times over the Pole, surveying unexplored areas for scientific purposes. On its way back, the airship crashed on the ice pack north of the Svalbard Islands and lost nearly half of its crew. 2 The accident was linked to adverse weather, including a high wind blowing from the northern side of the Svalbard Islands to the Franz Joseph Land: this wind stream, previously unknown, was nicknamed Italia, after the expedition that discovered it. 4 Nobile’s expeditions may be considered as the first Italian scientific missions in the Arctic region. -

Evelyn Briggs Baldwin and Operti Bay21 Amanda Lockerby Abstract During the second Wellman polar expedition, to Franz Josef Land in 1898, Wellman’s second- in-command, Evelyn Briggs Baldwin, gave the waters south of Cape Heller on the northwest of Wilczek Land the name ‘Operti Bay.’ Proof of this is found in Baldwin’s journal around the time of 16 September 1898. Current research indicates that Operti Bay was named after an Italian artist, Albert Operti. Operti’s membership in a New York City masonic fraternity named Kane Lodge, as well as correspondence between Baldwin and Rudolf Kersting, confirm that Baldwin and Operti engaged in a friendly relationship that resulted in the naming of the bay. He soon returned to school to study art (see Freemasons, n.d.). He came to the United States where he served as a correspondent for the New York Herald in the 1890s who accompanied Robert Peary on two expeditions to Greenland. Artwork Operti was known for his depictions of the Arctic which included scenes from the history of exploration and the ships used in this exploration in the 19th century. He painted scenes from the search for Sir John Franklin, including one of the Royal Navy vessels Erebus and Terror under sail, as well as the abandonment of the American vessel Advance during Elisha Kent Kane’s Second Grinnell expedition. -

Patricia Margaret Millar Date ii Abstract Photographers made a major contribution to the recording of the Heroic Era of Antarctic exploration. By far the best known photographers were the professionals, Herbert Ponting and Frank Hurley, hired to photograph British and Australasian expeditions. But a great number of photographs were also taken on Belgian, German, Swedish, French, Norwegian and Japanese expeditions. These were taken by amateurs, sometimes designated official photographers, often scientists recording their research. Apart from a few Pole-reaching images from the Norwegian expedition, these lesser known expedition photographers and their work seldom feature in the scholarly literature on the Heroic Era, but they, too, have their importance. They played a vital role in the growing understanding and advancement of Antarctic science; they provided visual evidence of their nation’s determination to penetrate the polar unknown; and they played a formative role in public perceptions of Antarctic geopolitics. -

Bibliography 49 Appendix 1 Year One - Draft Works Plan ii INTRODUCTION This Conservation Plan was written by Michael Pearson of the Australian Heritage Commission (AHC) at the behest of the Mawson’s Huts Conservation Committee (MHCC) and the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). It draws on work undertaken by Project Blizzard (Blunt 1991) and Allom Lovell Marquis-Kyle Architects (Allom 1988). The context for its production was the proposal by the Mawson’s Huts Conservation Committee (a private group supported by both the AHC and AAD) to raise funds by public subscription to carry out conservation work at the Mawson’s Huts Site. The Conservation Plan was developed between July 1992 and May 1993, with comment on drafts and input from members of the MHCC Technical Committee, William Blunt, Malcolm Curry, Sir Peter Derham, David Harrowfield, Linda Hay, Janet Hughes, Rod Ledingham, Duncan Marshall, John Monteath, and Fiona Peachey. The Conservation Plan outlines the reasons why Mawson’s Huts are of cultural significance, the condition of the site, the various issues which impinge upon its management, states the conservation policy to be applied, and how that policy might be implemented. Prior to each season’s work at the Historic Site a Works Program will be developed which indicates the works to be undertaken towards the achievement of the Plan. -
Rather Than Imposing Thematic Unity Or Predefining a Common Theoretical
The Supernatural Arctic: An Exploration Shane McCorristine, University College Dublin Abstract The magnetic attraction of the North exposed a matrix of motivations for discovery service in nineteenth-century culture: dreams of wealth, escape, extreme tourism, geopolitics, scientific advancement, and ideological attainment were all prominent factors in the outfitting expeditions. Yet beneath this „exoteric‟ matrix lay a complex „esoteric‟ matrix of motivations which included the compelling themes of the sublime, the supernatural, and the spiritual. This essay, which pivots around the Franklin expedition of 1845-1848, is intended to be an exploration which suggests an intertextuality across Arctic time and geography that was co-ordinated by the lure of the supernatural. * * * Introduction In his classic account of Scott‟s Antarctic expedition Apsley Cherry- Garrard noted that “Polar exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised”.1 If there is one single question that has been asked of generations upon generations of polar explorers it is, Why?: Why go through such ordeals, experience such hardship, and take such risks in order to get from one place on the map to another? From an historical point of view, with an apparent fifty per cent death rate on polar voyages in the long nineteenth century amid disaster after disaster, the weird attraction of the poles in the modern age remains a curious fact.2 It is a less curious fact that the question cui bono? also featured prominently in Western thinking about polar exploration, particularly when American expeditions entered the Arctic 1 Apsley Cherry-Garrard, The Worst Journey in the World.
