  • The Story of Final Fantasy VII and How Squaresoft
STS145 History of Computer Game Design, Final Paper, Winter 2001 Gek Siong Low Coming to America The making of Final Fantasy VII and how Squaresoft conquered the RPG market Gek Siong Low [email protected] Disclaimer: I have tried my best to find sources that are as reliable as possible (press releases, interviews in published magazines, etc) but many times I had to depend on third-party accounts of what happened. Some of these accounts conflict with one another, so I try to present as coherent an account of the history as I can here. I do not claim that everything in this paper is true. With that in mind, let us proceed on with the story… Introduction “[Final Fantasy VII is]…quite possibly the greatest game ever made.” -- GameFan magazine, quote on back of Final Fantasy VII CD case (Greatest Hits edition) The story of Squaresoft’s success in the US video games market appears at first glance to be like a fairy tale. Before Final Fantasy VII, console-based role-playing games (RPGs) were still a niche market, played only by a dedicated few who were willing to endure the long wait for the few games to cross the Pacific and onto American soil. Then came Final Fantasy VII in the September of 1997, wowing everybody with its amazing graphics, story and gameplay. The game single-handedly lifted console-based RPGs out of their little niche into the mainstream, selling millions of copies worldwide, and made Squaresoft a household name in video games. Final Fantasy VII CD cover art Today console-based RPGs are a major industry, with players spoilt-for- choice on which RPG to buy every Christmas.

  • SUPER FX Volume 1 8 and 16-Bit Video Game SFX OVERVIEW
SUPER FX Volume 1 8 and 16-bit Video Game SFX OVERVIEW As the name suggests, this SFX collection was created to emulate the fascinating, charming aesthetic of video games released in the 8 and 16-bit era. Specifically, we sought the signature sound of games from the late 80s into late 90s, such as role-playing games like Final Fantasy 4 through Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy Tactics, and similar titles. The collection began as a private library used in my own fantasy role-playing video game, Tangledeep, which was released on February 1, 2018 with an unmistakable nod to the aesthetics of the Super Nintendo. Using authentic retro sound chips, lo-fi samples, subtractive synthesizers, and vintage processing techniques, I created a wide range of impacts, weapons, chirps, spells, bleeps, and UI noises. Once Tangledeep was released, and with some wonderful contributions by sound designers 3ee and Dickie Chapin, we expanded the collection to include an even greater variety of just over 250 sounds. With these new additions, it’s suitable not only for medieval fantasy games, but sci-fi, adventure, real- time strategy, and any other titles with that golden pixel-art visual style! CONTENT NOTES All sound effects are provided in stereo 16-bit / 44khz quality as WAV files, tagged for SoundMiner, and carefully edited with balanced peak volume. High-level categories are “Animals”, “Combat”, “Magic”, “SciFi”, “UI”, “Weapons”, and “Misc”. Many effects have a certain amount of baked in faux-reverb that was common on the Super Nintendo. This carefully-sculpted “space” is key to the authenticity of the sounds.

Michelle Chun STS 145 History of Computer Game Design Professor Henry Lowood March 18, 2002 SquareSoft: What’s Behind the Hype? A Case History SquareSoft is one of the most important and significant names in the gaming industry, especially in terms of innovation and profitability. Square's games make headlines, sell systems, and generate enormous buzz. The company has become synonymous with role-playing games, and unfailingly creates games, such as the Final Fantasy series, that are constantly innovative and one step ahead of the competition. One may even say that SquareSoft has set the standard by which other RPGs are measured, and that games like the Final Fantasy series have become the ideal that many other RPGs strive for. The popularity and success of RPGs in the gaming industry can be partly attributed to the contributions made by SquareSoft. It appears that SquareSoft has the “Midas touch” and has been essential in the rise and success of the Sony PlayStation. For instance, its move from Nintendo to Sony in the mid '90s may have been a key factor in the ultimate success of the PlayStation – in January 1997, the hit game Final Fantasy VII caused a two-month surge in PlayStation sales (Asakura 209). Even Electronic Arts formed a joint venture with the company, establishing Square Electronic Arts in 1998. SquareSoft has also played an essential role in the expansion of the gaming industry into other arenas, such as the film industry. Through an analysis of SquareSoft’s history and future, as well as analyses of several games that are considered to be SquareSoft’s greatest hits, I will attempt to draw a conclusion as to what has helped SquareSoft become an industry leader and what has made the company’s games so successful.

Moreover, the game popularized the now-famous Konami code, one giving players 30 lives to squander in their mad dash for victory. You play as the boxer Little Mac while progressing through various boxing circuits by winning fights against quirky, curious opponents. Upload your work. In a strange way, the jarring differences between the two styles added to the charm of the game. American audiences in the 90s missed out on the actual second and third installments in the long-running Final Fantasy games franchise, which is a shame. There is a theory in certain circles of the internet that states the first Mario Kart you play is always your favorite. The solution was to take another Nintendo platformer, Doki Doki Panic , and replace the characters with figures from the Mario franchise. After he was released from prison, he took part in a deal for an old friend and was ambushed. Whereas today the gulf between AAA games and smaller releases is astronomical, in those halcyon days of the 80s, even a weird game based on a comic strip nobody remembers could stand alongside the heavyweights of the Nintendo lineup. Besides human skin, teeth, tongue, eyes, and hair will look much better after applying the new shader. Adventure games, like the moon, have waxed and waned throughout video game history.

It includes case studies from several games including The Legend of Zelda, Dragon Warrior, and multiple games from the Final Fantasy series. Discussed in detail are how specific gaming events such as the overworld, town, and battle each serve a specific function in the player’s immersion into an imaginary world. Overworld themes are used to evoke a sense of place, town themes establish identity of the inhabitants, while battle themes provide intensity to a new form of gameplay. The music for each one of these gaming events contains specific harmonic, melodic, or rhythmic gestures that establish musical tropes that are used throughout this genre of game. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my deepest appreciation to my committee: Drs. Steven Kemper, Robert Aldridge, Karen Cook, and Christopher Doll. Thank you for taking the time to read this dissertation and for your invaluable advice.

  • Chrono Trigger Walter Shen I. Game Information the Game Being
Chrono Trigger Walter Shen I. Game Information The game being reviewed is “Chrono Trigger,” which was both developed and published by Square Soft and was released in August 1995 for the Super Nintendo. The game was largely created by the “dream team” of producer Kazuhiko Aoki (“Final Fantasy” producer), character designer Akira Toriyama (of “Dragonball Z” fame), and supervisor Yuji Horii (“Dragon Quest” scenarist), along with supervisor Hironobu Sakaguchi. Composer Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy composer) teamed up with Yasunori Mitsuda to provide the music for the game. The main programmers for Chrono Trigger were Keizo Kokubo and Katsuhisa Higuchi. II. Storyline and Game-play As an RPG (role-playing game), Chrono Trigger’s storyline is very important to the game. Luckily, its storyline is definitely one of the most outstanding aspects of the game. But to fully understand the storyline, one must first learn about the characters that the storyline revolves around. For almost every RPG-lover who has ever played Chrono Trigger, the Akira Toriyama- designed characters are among the most loved out of any game. The main character, Crono (referred to by some as “Chrono”), is a brave, young, and taciturn boy (he never talks in the game) with wild hair. The beautiful and adventurous Marle is secretly, in reality, Princess Nadia of Guardia Kingdom. Crono’s childhood friend Lucca is a scientific genius and inventor extraordinaire. Frog is a noble being from the Middle Ages who protects his kingdom even after having been turned into a frog. Ayla is a strong-willed prehistoric woman who can put up a very convincing argument with her fists.

This is an analysis of the history of Xenogears and Xenosaga, in an attempt to shine some light on how the Xeno- series evolved. I felt this was necessary because of the many rumors people have had over the years. Some believed Takahashi had Xenosaga written out from the beginning and that Xenogears was the result of Square forcing him to have it set on just one planet. Others have grossly assumed Xenogears was just a result of Square wanting to rip off Neon Genesis Evangelion following that series' success in Japan at the time and that Xenosaga has nothing to do with Xenogears, only using references as cameos and homages.
