HINDMARSH Ouyen HORSHAM Follow the Silo Art trail... Silo Art Trail is Australia’s largest outdoor gallery, stretching over 200 kilometres and linking six small Victorian country towns and celebrating Australia’s rural communities. Set in the state’s remote north-west Wimmera Mallee region, the trail acknowledges the region’s history as an important wheat growing area and honours its locals through a series of remarkable, large-scale portraits painted by a team of local and international artists. Drawing visitors from all corners of Patchewollock Australia and the globe, the silo art is the work of six highly acclaimed, internationally recognised street artists, Julia Volchkova (Russia), Guido van Helten, Fintan Magee, Matt Adnate, Kaff-eine and Rone. Unlike anything Australia has seen before, the murals have repurposed old de-commissioned wheat as their canvas, drawing a vast global audience and breathing new life into the struggling, drought-affected rural communities of Brim, Patchewollock, Sheep Hills, Rosebery, Lascelles and Rupanyup.

22 WELCOME TO THE WIMMERA | SPRING/SUMMER 2019 The Backyard Tourist by Amelia Crafter HORSHAM Spring and Summer in the Wimmera. Clearly the two best seasons to live in this glorious part of the world. Why do I say that? Because I am not a fan of the cold, being cooped up and having washing drying all around me on clothes racks. Right now, the wattle is flowering and that bright yellow is the hope I needed to remind me that short chilly days are about to be a memory and evenings spent enjoying a beer in the warm sun are just around the corner. As this is a combined spring/summer edition, it was a seriously hard choice to pick what backyard tourist options to highlight. I have decided to go very water-based and pick two of my all-time Wimmera favourites. 1. Yabbies. Yes, those glorious little mud diggers are a Wimmera delicacy. Growing up in south-western NSW, we regularly caught yabbies in our farm channels, but they were nowhere near as popular as they are here. Yabbies are not just something you catch to eat in the Wimmera. They are a whole social scene in themselves. Get some friends together, find a lake and make a day of it. You can use a boat or even walk nets out. Kids and adults alike will have an absolute ball catching them. Then, after a few rinses, it’s time to cook the critters and sit back and enjoy your finger food and a beer. How to eat yabbies is pretty contentious. Some people love a yabby sandwich and some people have them with tomato sauce. I prefer them with bit of thousand island dressing or done in the wok with some chilli and garlic. The most important part about yabbying and eating yabbies making it a shared experience. Don’t forget to share some with your neighbours if you catch plenty More about Millie... (trust me, they love it). Amelia Crafter is a writer/trainer and 2. Just getting out on the water. There is absolutely nothing more peaceful than consultant who loves living in the Wimmera. being on the water. Catching fish makes it even more fun. But you don’t have to After moving to the region 10 years ago, be a fisherman/woman to enjoy the great waterways we have in the region. From she met her now husband and together Wartook Lake, the Wimmera River and the , just find a way to they have twin 5-year-old boys. connect with the flowing life blood of the region. She loves leopard print, haloumi, getting While skiing and fishing are popular warm weather past times in the Wimmera, I outside and supporting kick-ass rural really enjoy some solo time kayaking the Wimmera River, especially during one of women. our glorious sunsets. Finding the time to get our kayak out on the water is one my Amelia doesn’t like moths, tuna and negativity. She is passionate, vocal favourite things to do. Being so low to the water level gives it a different perspective (opinionated) and thinks she is funnier and you really feel like you are part of the river. If you want to test your balance, than she probably is. the local water ways are great for stand up paddle boarding as they are generally To learn more about Amelia, follow calm if ski boats aren’t flying by. If you don’t have your own kayak, there are places her on Instagram @millie_crafter or around town to hire them, trust me, you won’t regret it. check out her blog www.millieandwords.com Hope to see you out on the water! Amelia’s chilli & garlic yabbies recipe 1. Once you have boiled and peeled yabbies, pat yabbies dry and place them in a bag with some flour, salt and pepper and shake them around. Rice flour is the best as it crisps up nicely but use what you have. 2. Put some vegetable/peanut oil in a pan/wok and get it nice and hot. 3. Place the flour dusted yabbies in the pan/wok and toss for 30 seconds before adding in chopped or minced garlic, thinly sliced hot red chillies and some chopped spring onion. 4. Toss around the wok for a further minute, or until yabbies are cripsy and garlic and chilli starts to brown. 5. Serve. Pro tip* If you know you are going to catch a good feed of yabbies, you can pre cut your chillies, garlic and spring onion and have prepared in a snap lock bag before you go. You can also have your flour in a separate bag pre-prepared.

WELCOME TO THE WIMMERA | SPRING/SUMMER 2019 29 HORSHAM Laneway Cafe without borders opens as social enterprise Former Horsham café, Thipatiy Coffee Lounge, has transformed into a new social enterprise focused on workforce pathways – Laneway Café without borders. The new venture is a partnership project between Centre for Participation, Horsham Special School and Woodbine, and is designed to help prepare students with special needs and migrant women, for ongoing, long-term employment while also helping them develop hospitality and business skills. The project received a State Government grant through the 2018 Pick My Project scheme and has seen much excitement and positivity from the local community in its opening weeks. Employing a mix of the previous Thipatiy staff, along with some new faces, Laneway is serving up fresh muffins, slices (and mini slices), hot coffee, sandwiches and much more. The enterprise will also be working on growing the meal home-delivery and school-lunch services, as well as breaking down barriers for a cross-section of the community.
