ELDERSLIE 2.1. The Village Elderslie, the birthplace of Sir William Wallace, lies between the towns of Paisley, 3 miles east, and Johnstone, 1 mile west. Glasgow International Airport is a 10-minute drive along the A737. Glasgow, the Ayrshire coast and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park are easily accessible by major road and rail links. With over 6,300 people, the expanding village currently has a development of around 150 family sized homes. The increasing availability of property provides for an all age community and offers new opportunities in our parish. The village has many amenities including Post Office, grocers, butchers, pharmacy, florist, hairdressers, restaurants / cafes / take–aways, village hall, play parks and grass football pitches. There are major supermarkets in both Johnstone and Paisley. The Phoenix Retail Park, with various major retailers and a 15-screen cinema complex, is a 5-minute drive away. The Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley is about 10 minutes away. Elderslie has its own bowling green, golf course and a non-denominational Primary School. The school has strong links with secondary schools in Johnstone and Paisley. There is also another church in the village, East Gate Church. Within the parish there are 2 sheltered housing complexes, 2 supported living complexes and Adams House – a Church of Scotland Crossreach Home. These facilities are closely linked with Elderslie Kirk through membership & outreach. The minister in the past has been invited to undertake chaplaincy at Wallace Primary School and Adams House. Page 2 ELDERSLIE KIRK 2.2. Congregation The congregation of Elderslie Kirk was established in 1977 when the churches of Elderslie East and Elderslie West were united. It is a friendly, lively and enthusiastic congregation with a wide age range There is a roll of approximately 435, with around 25% in regular attendance at worship. The majority of our members come from Elderslie and our primary aim is to spread God’s word by supporting the community of Elderslie itself. We do this in a number of ways: providing weekly acts of worship offering wedding and baptismal services to local people supporting people at times of bereavement offering a wide range of activities for all ages making links to local community groups and supporting our local school through chaplaincy keeping links to other churches and to the wider Church of Scotland offering the community use of our facilities We are delighted to be an accredited Fairtrade Church. Services Sunday services take place at 11 am with members of the Congregation participating. An informal mid-week fellowship service at 11am on Wednesday mornings is preceded by tea and coffee (from September to Easter). Members of our worship team lead some of these services. There is an annual Youth Organisation Dedication Service. Communion Services are held on the first Sundays of March and October at 11 am. Throughout the year, particularly in the summer months and at the Wednesday fellowship, there are further opportunities to take communion in a less formal manner. Communion services are also conducted in the Sheltered Housing complexes and at Adams House. During Holy Week joint services are held with the three Johnstone congregations (Johnstone High, St Paul’s and St Andrew’s Trinity) with whom Elderslie has a long-standing association. An early morning service is held on Easter Sunday. 4.2. Music Musical provision for services includes use of a traditional Two Manual “Wood” organ and a modern Yamaha Clavinova keyboard. Further musical inspiration is provided by the church choir. There is enthusiastic singing by the congregation, using CH4 hymn books for traditional hymns and contemporary music. From time to time the choir contributes specific musical items to worship services. Page 6 ELDERSLIE KIRK 5. CHURCH BUILDINGS & FACILITIES The Church buildings are all on Main Road Elderslie. 5.1.
