CIVIL WAR LECTURE: BATTLE OF WASSAW SOUND, GEORGIA The Mariners’ Museum and Park June 18; 12 p.m FREE VIRTUAL LECTURE: Presented by John V. Quarstein, director emeritus of the USS Monitor Center. Advance registration required. Quarstein will give a presentation on the Civil War naval battle between the Confederate ram CSS Atlanta and the Passaic-class ironclad monitors USS Weehawken and USS Nahant. About the lecture: When the British-built blockade-runner Fingal could not escape from Savannah, Georgia, in 1862, the Confederates transformed the iron-hulled vessel into the ironclad CSS Atlanta. The Atlanta was equipped with four Brooke rifles, a 20-foot ram, and a spar torpedo. Many Southerners believed that this ram could be a match for any Union monitor. When the test came on June 17, 1863, in Wassaw Sound, Georgia, Atlanta was captured by two Passaic-class monitors, Weehawken and Nahant, in a brief encounter. The captured ironclad was repaired and commissioned as USS Atlanta, serving in the James River against its former Confederate owners. 100 Museum Drive, 757-596-2222. Click here for more information.

FUN! – FINDING URSELF NOW Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center June 12 – 30, 2021 About the Exhibit: In an effort to continue building artistic bridges throughout the community, the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center held its second iteration of “A Space of Our Own” in September 2020. During this exhibition, guest curator Anthony Wardrett and select artists displayed their incredibly diverse artworks created during our Open Studio Sessions. Throughout the exhibition, the public voted for their favorite pieces and one of the top finishers, 8-year-old Gracie Eriks, was chosen as the winner of the solo exhibition prize. Instead of just displaying her artwork, Gracie wants to share this experience with kids all across . Thus, we present to you “FUN!” (Finding Urself Now)- an exhibition featuring youth artists who use art as a vehicle of joy, exploration, and expression. Free and open to the public. Face masks are required. 2410 Wickham Avenue, 757-247-8950. Click here for more information.
