One day everything changes when Katie brings home a stray dog she picked up at the pound. The two butt heads during a walk and end up being captured by the pound. Here they encounter a crazy bunny that has begun an army of lost pets who want to kill their owners. To try and get away from this group, the pair become close friends and realize that living together won’t be so bad after all. This movie could really symbolize blended families and the need to all get along together. The dogs wanting to get out into the city to save their friends who were taken by the pound symbolizes the true friendship and family bond that can occur when we all look out for each other. The animation was flawless, portraying New York City as though the water was really there. This film appeals to kids aged 2 - 102. TOP FILMS IN 2016 BFI RESEARCH AND STATISTICS PUBLISHED JUNE 2017 The top four films released at the UK box office in 2016 were UK qualifying productions, including the year’s top title, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which earned gross receipts of £66 million. FACTS IN FOCUS The top two films of the year were Rogue One: A Star Wars Story with takings of £66 million and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them with earnings of £55 million. Seventeen films earned £20 million or over at the UK box office in 2016, one more than in 2015. Six UK qualifying films featured in the top 20 films of the year, down from eight in 2015. With takings of £16 million, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie was the highest earning independent UK film of the year. The top 20 UK films grossed £395 million, 36% of the total UK box office. Ten UK qualifying films spent a total of 20 weeks at the top of the UK weekend box office charts. The box office revenue generated from 3D film screenings was £93 million. OOH Case Study Universal Pictures: The Secret Life of Pets Problem How does a new franchise break through the clutter of the saturated summer of movies and make its own film stand out? Solution Craft a large-scale Times Square domination that creates chat- ter and ultimately drives consumers to the box office. Background While well-known brands have months (sometimes years) to develop their brand and gain a fan base, theatrical releases have merely weeks to drive millions to the box office and be- come a success. In a crowded theatrical landscape, our chal- lenge was to differentiate The Secret Life of Pets from other releases during the season. Additionally, the team wanted to establish the film as a pop culture movement and the launch pad for a new animated feature. The Secret Life of Pets is the first new franchise from Illumination Entertainment after the huge successes of Despicable Me and Minions. With this in mind, the bar was set extremely high and the team not only had to exceed client and filmmaker expectations, but also internally challenge itself to find a way to bring this film and these char- acters to life in a new way that would create an impact in the marketplace. Another additional challenge was that Summer 2016 included other existing animated franchises such as Disney’s: Finding Dory, Sony Pictures: Angry Birds, and 20th Century Fox’s: Ice Age. All of these films have large existing fan bases, so the team had to break through the clutter. Objective The client and filmmakers wanted an activation that would garner attention for being the “largest” or “never-been-done- before” execution exclusive of the traditional OOH formats that would provide frequency and awareness of the film.
